IMPHAL, July 16: The Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies (FREINDS), head office Keishampat today issued a press release expressing its `concern` on the recent face-off between AMSU and barbers over picking up of barbers for overcharging customers following complaints from customers.

The statement said, non-locals have increased in terms of their population so much in the state that they can now challenge the voice of the indigenous people and it is no surprise that the barbers have come to defy the AMSU and overcharged against the AMSU stance on the issue.

It has further said that the barbers were charging Rs 30 against the Rs 20 fixed by the state Labour department.

The earning potential of a barber in the state is drawing non-locals into the state, it said while urging the un-employed youths of the state to understand the market and enter it.

RAW.CON 2013

National Conference on “Vernacular Modernities”

24 – 27 September 2013

Last date for submission of abstracts                        :           20 July 2013

RAW.CON or Researchers at Work Conference, in its third year, is a research initiative, broadly focusing on Literary and Cultural Studies, from the Centre for Comparative Literature, University of Hyderabad.

RAW.CON 2013 seeks to re-engage with the questions posed by/to modernity, in all its plural-singularity, from our academic and everyday locations. While “modernity” has been on our table—in terms of its incompleteness, in terms of its ab-original in(di)genuity and also in its various other unrealized trajectories—at least over the past two decades, an uneasy relation, if not dissatisfaction, seems to be the overall term of reference.

RAW.CON 2013, hence, is an attempt to take stock of current research in terms of modern-ities and its various regional/vernacular alter-ities. Using “vernacular modernities” as a shorthand notation, the proposed four-day conference intends to explore this problematic in its broadest possible sense in order to engage with issues regarding “our” present which is being heterogeneously and discontinuously re-constituted with respect to given, if not pre-given, understandings of the “national” and the “vernacular.” Indeed one could start by asking: Is regional/vernacular modernities even a viable concept for our times, particularly in an increasingly contested public sphere where new forms of cultural elaboration and differentiation seem to emerge every other day, and whereby the local is invariably being interrupted by global traffic?

RAW.CON 2013 intends to interrogate the ambivalence in the way we seem to be living with modernity, in all its singular-pluralities, especially since most research work does not seem to be very concerned about foregrounding such an engagement. While interesting work seems to be happening all around us, it seems imperative that we do not cry off from engaging with the larger framework that belies such work also. More than papers on textual explorations and analyses, what is envisaged is a critical engagement with the very ground on which most recent research is based upon. Apart from questions regarding vernacular modernities and whether they were/are imitative, derivative, indigenous/nativist or on their relationship with the national and the sub-national/regional, a central question to be addressed would be the political stakes of various caste/community formations in this debate.

RAW.CON 2013 welcomes papers that explore/explode the above notions. Some of the broad rubrics for the conference would be:

  • Academia
  • Cinema
  • Region
  • Community
  • Cyberspace
  • History
  • Literature
  • Media
  • Performance
  • Pop Culture
  • Religion
  • Sexuality

The post Messages in the media appeared first on  KanglaOnline.com.

The media as we know, has the role and duty of keeping people informed and shaping opinions. In Manipur, even as the agreed upon consensus is that the media sector is placed under serious strain given the nature of the society and the various push and pulls that exist, the media is relevant for various players and stakeholders of assorted shades and hues. If the Government and its various agencies scan the news hoping that only their ‘achievements’ are highlighted and never their failings; the various organizations, civil society groups and associations, NGOs and others try to keep the media informed on the urgency and importance of their stands and viewpoints so that they are then relayed to the reading masses. Sometimes, there is just so much significance given to the media unnecessarily that functions, organized either by Government agencies or those by the non Government related bodies do not start if the media turn up at such events gets delayed or trickles down to a few. And while it is true that the media is often caught in the middle of various armed state and non state actors who all want their way of thinking and their statements carried in toto, the same applies for non armed state and non state actors. The only difference obviously is that the non state armed forces can very well send gifts of wrapped up lethod launchers as one media house did or make very polite phone calls requesting for certain news to be carried and ‘prominently’ at that. Which then begs the question whether the media in Manipur just a space to be filled up by the statements made by various actors. The other relevant area in the importance of what appears in the media is whether anything is achieved at all when certain things that are dictated gets carried in the media, whether their inclusion in the media by the push factor guarantees that the general population believes in what is spouted.

But for various stakeholders across the board, the media is important to show that they are working for the greater good of the common man. Which is why NGOs and various do gooders will make a beeline for media presence and bombard media houses with their press releases. All of which they think are important and of a very urgent nature. Put the social vigilante groups in the picture and what does the media have on its hands but requests for reporters to be dispatched to places where couples or young people have been caught in varying degrees of intimacy. Such groups will demand that the media listen to their lecture to those unfortunate enough to be caught in their social drives and insist that names and photos are published. If the reporters are not dispatched, they helpfully send in detailed reports with the photos. There is also an interesting category of groups that may or not exist in reality but will send in signed press releases without any official letterhead or a call back contact number. Many years ago, there was an instance of a bandh call given by a group that no one had heard of. It did come with a letterhead and verification at the area brought to light that the group was non existent. Such is the fare that the media in Manipur has to live with amidst the push and pull of various powerful groups that does exist.

IFP has made its case for the insensitive manner in which various groups including JACs highlight the name of women who have undergone rape and other forms of sexual assault and the media falls under the pressure of exposing what happens. Often, various stakeholders in the state fall upon themselves to be seen as doing well for the other people but do not realize that what they are doing is spreading insensitivity. We see this in the manner in which VIPs, MLAs, Ministers and representatives of various groups go calling upon those who have undergone vulnerable situations and call in the media as recorders. And when the media here fall for such cons or play a part of the great public relations machinery, we are accepting that sometimes it is not just the threats that shuts us up but the inability to know what is relevant and what is not.

IMPHAL, July 14 (NNN): The all Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has appreciated the O Ibobi Singh led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) Government of Manipur  for appointing  Chingai constituency MLA  MK. Preshow Shimray to the post of Deputy Speaker and Z. Kikhonbou Newmai of Tamei assembly constituency to the post of Vice-Chairman of Hill Area Committee (HAC).

ATSUM president Muan Tombing said the timely filling of the two important posts by the tribal without any opposition from other political parties is a good gesture that speaks volumes of message to the people that under the charismatic leadership of Shri O Ibobi, avenues are created for the Hill MLAs to venture into a broader spectrum of politics. It is indeed a test proving for the tribal to secure proper functioning of the Hill Areas Committee under 371-c of the constitution of India.
