IMPHAL, June 4: The Handicapped Welfare Society (HAWS) has expressed its profound gratitude to the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for sponsoring the Escort-Allowance (2009-10) for children with Disability (I-VIII standard) to society. IMPHAL, June 8: The Directorate of Information and Public Relation, (DIPR) Government of Manipur is organizing two days Multi Media Publicity Campaign on June 11 and 12 this month at Lainigthou Puthiba Community hall at Khurai.
The multinedia campaign is to be organised to highlight achievements and development programms undertaken by the existing Congress led SPF government in the state.
According to a release of DIPR, the two days publicity campaign will be formally launched by the deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Th. Lokeshwar Singh and the function will be presided by K Shamungou Singh, president, the Pourabi Rising Star Club.

IMPHAL June 14 : Unidentified persons shot dead a person at Thongkhong Laxmi Bazar under Wangoi Police Station at around 8.45 pm today. 

The victim is identified as one Huidrom Jotin, 45, s/o H Modhu of Yumnam Huidrom Mayai Leikai , he is a pharmacist at the state medical department and runs a private pharmacy at Thongkhong Laxmi Bazar.

Sources said that Jotin after closing his shop today returned back home with some persons when they were accosted by some gun wielding persons. The unidentified persons then took away Jotin at gunpoint and later a shot was heard. The residents of the area found Jotin shot in the head and was rushed to Imphal for medical treatment but was declared brought dead by RIMS doctors. The motive behind the murder is not known as of yet.

IMPHAL June 18: The protest against the non implementation of 6th pay only to the teachers of Government Polytechnic out of all other employees of the State Government, undertook by the teachers of the institute will be suspended, a press release by L Samungou, secretary of Govt. Polytechnic Gazetted Staff Association states.

The protest started with mass casual leave on June 16 and now will be suspended following assurance from the education minister that the demands will be fulfilled shortly. Normal classes will resume from June 20 onwards, the release said

IMPHAL June 20: Letkhogin Haokip, IAS, commissioner, social welfare department, government of Manipur, today, inaugurated the 4 days training cum media workshop for state project officers, social welfare district level officers, district officers of Neheru Yuva Kendras of Imphal zone, district project officers and assistants at the youth hostel in Khuman Lampak, Imphal.

The media workshop is in continuation of a special project on Awareness and Education for the prevention of Drug abuse and Alcoholism.

The special project is supported by the ministry of social justice and empowerment, government of India that was formally launched by Ajay Maken, union minister youth affairs and sports (independent charge) on April 5, 2011 at B. Vengnom community hall in Churachandpur district.

Dr. M.P. Gupta, joint director, NKYS, Hqtrs, Dr. A.K. Verma, additional director NKYS, Hqtrs, Dr. A. Jayenta Kumar, director, RRTC, Annie Mangsatabam, Y. Rupachandra, K. Maharabi and many others will be resource person during the four days training cum media workshop.

On June 24 and 26 another training batch of village level implementers will commenced in the same training venue at Khuman Lampak.

IMPHAL June 27: The 60 hour general strike called by Committee on Protection of Tribal Areas of Manipur (COPTAM) in the hill districts of the state ended today morning at 5 am. 

Due to the strike , transportation in the hill areas including Chandel, Ukhrul, Tamenglong had been severely affected.It may be mentioned that, COPTAM has been demanding a charter of demands on the rectification of the state government policies on tribal rights which includes, inter alia, forest rights, census issue, district boundaries, land record etc.

IMPHAL, July 2(Newmai News Network): The All Manipur Tribal Union (AMTU) has strongly condemned reported manhandled a man mistaking him to be the general secretary of its organization (COPTAM) who identified themselves as members of a particular social organisation at North AOC in Imphal on June 28.

AMTU demanded from the state government to look into the matter urgently and book the culprits. It also appealed all the concerned authorities and civil society organisations not to engage in notorious activities that may disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the state.

AMTU then expressed resentment over an incident where a traffic police personnel directed abusive langauge aganst its president D.P Panmei who is also a former minister. The incident occurred at M.G Avenue on Saturday, according to AMTU.

IMPHAL July 8: Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) in a press release issued by its general secretary today has strongly reacted and condemned the so called Naga crusaders. Terming it as a bogus and fictitious organization, the release stated that it may be the handy work of few miscreant with the intention to create communal tension in the state for vested interest. 

It further informed that there is no knowledge of the existence of the so called Naga crusaders in Zeliangrong areas. The release has further appealed to all the communities of Manipur to maintain communal harmony and peaceful co-existence and further appealed to keep maximum restraint from any form of communal propaganda or campaign.

IMPHAL, July 11: A district level youth convention was held today at Nungourok REACH hall, Chandel district jointly organized by the ministry of social welfare and development, GOI and NYK Chandel.

A statement issued by the DIPR stated that the objective of the convention aimed at giving awareness on the ill effect of drugs and its impact on the society, and preventive measures among the youths.

It said the convention was attended by about 100 youths. The convention will impart awareness to youths of about 150 villages under the Chandel district.

IMPHAL, July 17: The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded the concerned authority to streamline the reservation policy for the children of faculty members at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).

A release of DESAM stated that the five percent seat reservation in MBBS course for the children of faculty members of JNIMS is a good policy for the institute to attract more of well qualified professors. However, the governing council needs to frame proper criteria before introducing such policy, it added.

IMPHAL, July 21: Former CADA and MOBC minister Md Allaudin has today announced that he will be contesting the ensuing 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections from Lilong assembly constituency on the Congress ticket.

Allaudin, 62, son of former Chief Minister Allimuddin, was elected as MLA from Lilong in the 7th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections and was a state minister in the then Nipamacha government.

Addressing the public at a function today at his residence at Lilong Haoreibi Turel Ahanbi, the ex-minister stated that the Muslim dominated constituency of Lilong has not been developed much during the last few assembly terms. He has decided to contest from the Congress Party with the objective of bringing utmost development to the constituency, Allaudin asserted.

IMPHAL, July 22: A Tree plantation drive was carried out by 15 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under the aegis of HQ IGAR(South) at Phundrei, Thoubal on 22 Jul 2011.  A total of 500 saplings including 150 Gulmohar, 100 Jack Fruits, 100 Karpoor and 150 Neem were planted. Commandant 15 Assam Rifles alongwith Pradhans/Headman of neighboring villages like Langathel and Phundrei and approx 200 School children from the area undertook the plantation.  Representatives of the State Nursery department were also present on the occasion. The local people, especially the School children were impressed upon the significance of Green environment in today’s modern world.  The local populace have expressed gratitude at this yet another noble step taken by Assam Rifles.
