Intensifying war of words Don’t punch below the belt

The war of words between the BJP and the Congress is getting intense. And the verbal duel is confined not only at the flag hoisting ceremonies of different candidates or while speaking to the media, but also in the advertisements that have been issued to the Imphal based newspapers here.

Not that it ever went out of the consciousness of the public. But the manner in which the Framework Agreement signed between the NSCN (IM) and the Government of India back on August 3, 2015, has suddenly come to the centre stage is too significant to miss. And in many ways this means that the election campaign of the Congress and the BJP is centred around the ongoing peace process between the Centre and the NSCN (IM).

Not conducive for polls now stand Need to go beyond this

Point delivered. It is however important to go beyond the observation that the time is not conducive to hold polls in the State and study why such a situation has come about in the first place. Obviously the root cause will go back to decades, the decades of the big, big divide between the hills and the valley and it will need more than a book to come out with the whys and hows but it is important to study the present scenario, a condition wherein some organisations, the Citizens’ Committee, Manipur and earlier the United Naga Council had deemed it fit to put across the message to the Election Commission of India that the time is not conducive to hold the scheduled election to the State Assembly.

This is a powerful statement and perhaps the first time that the ongoing peace talk between the NSCN (IM) and the Government has been brought in. Officially it was Interlocutor to the peace talk, RN Ravi who said that the ongoing economic blockade imposed by the UNC could impact on the Naga peace talks, but more than likely that he would not have delivered such a powerful statement without the knowledge of the Prime Minister and the other BJP leaders.

Highway blockade is illegal. This has been ruled by the Supreme Court of India. No two ways about it. The Central Government too had asked the State Government to employ all necessary measures to ensure the smooth flow of goods laden vehicles along the National Highways in the face of the more than 100 days economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC).

The other aspiring BJP candidates Battling not only Cong

It is clear and this will be another headache for the BJP. It is not only the Congress which the BJP will have to fight it out with but also the others who were denied the party’s ticket. With so many of the BJP intending candidates now jumping onto the bandwagon of other political parties to contest the election, it is more than clear that the much tom tommed slogan that all will back the one given the BJP ticket at the hustings, has been given the quiet burial.

It should be more than apparent to all. With election less than 30 days and with the United Naga Council not showing any indication that it will lift the ongoing economic blockade, the two principal political parties, the Congress and the BJP are leaving no stone unturned to gain political mileage out of the situation. So while the BJP has not come out openly to criticise the district creation, it has more than made it clear that the Congress Government has failed to get the highways cleared to allow free movement of goods laden vehicles.

Expectedly it is the two principal political parties which have announced the names of candidates for the upcoming Assembly election. While the Congress has named candidates in all the 60 Assembly seats, the BJP is yet to name its candidates in Bishnupur AC and Lamshang AC. Whether the BJP will field candidates in these two Constituencies or not will be known only in the coming days, but everything says that it is going to be a tough fight between the two political parties.

Let it be clear. It was not Jyotin Waikhom who chose to leave the Congress, but the party which literally sealed the door on him in admitting Kh Joykisan into the Congress sometime back. The same is the case with Sagolshem Achouba, the man who has been contesting from Wangoi Assembly Constituency as a Congress candidate in the past elections. Here the script runs the same with Achouba quitting the Congress, after the party admitted sitting MLA O Lukhoi.
