Guwahati, 17th Nov, 2012: Proud moment for the Eclectic Group as two grand events roll in one. The re-launch of Eclectic Times, the region’s most cherished magazine reinvented into Eclectic Northeast and the felicitation of MC Mary Kom, winner of Olympics Bronze medal, in the discussion forum Eclectic Speaker Series held at Hotel Gateway Grandeur in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi.

CM of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi, Olympic Champion, MC Mary Kom, Director, Eclectic Publications, Gaurav Gogoi, Managing Ditrector, Tanushree Hazarika, releasing Eclectic Northeast

From its very inception Eclectic has been a path-breaker, representing the much criticised and deeply misunderstood part of India-the Northeast-in a positive and impactful manner. Notwithstanding huge market challenges, it grew up to be the leading English magazine in the region.

The magazine is all set to be bolder and stronger; to take pride in its identity and therefore Eclectic Times has now become Eclectic Northeast. It aspires to be the most trusted publication in terms of an independent, gallant and responsible perspective of Northeast India, symbolic with the new tagline: We Speak For Our Region.

The new avatar will have more research-based stories, including opinions about the northeast which will be incisive and analytical. Keeping in mind the colourful heritage and culture of the region, the magazine will continue to present content in an ever charming and attractive manner.

Marking the second edition of Eclectic Speaker Series, the session began with a speech by the Publisher & President of North India’s top selling Gujrathi magazine Chitralekha, Mitrajit Bhattacharya who spoke on the growth of regional media. The event was also graced by renowned journalist, author and political commentator, Wasbir Hussain.

Speaking about the vision of Eclectic Northeast, MD, Eclectic Group, Tanushree Hazarika said, “Through magazine and supporting events we want to break the negative mindsets of the society and reach out to the new age thinkers. The idea is to bring out wholesome growth and prosperity for the region_together.

Hon’ble Chief Minister in his address said, “Mary Kom is a legendary lady of whom the whole country is proud of. If we follow her qualities then our country will be at the top. Even though the state has seen many conflicts and clashes in the recent past, our state has been on the march. We need to remember that inspite of challenges, we can rise.” He spoke about woman empowerment and that without it, progress is not possible.

“We have many positive things in the Northeast but we need to project ourselves in the right way. Promoting sports and games can help stop conflict.” He congratulated Eclectic for maintaining a high quality of content and design and projecting northeast in the right light.

“There are many challenges for a woman, after marriage and children, things become doubly hard to manage as you have many responsibilities,” said Guest of Honour MC Mary Kom. “Everybody has talent, if we do hard work and have the right kind of determination than it will bring positive results. If i can do, then why you can’t do?” she added. Speaking of her experience in London Olympics, she expressed that she had been thoroughly focused for the Olympics and had the support of family and the whole country. “I tried to win a bigger medal but in Rio, I will try to get bigger medal for the country. Keep supporting not only me but all the other Northeast sports persons so that we may bring more medals home,” she said.

Speaking about the power of icons, Wasbir Hussain said, “Media has become increasingly preoccupied with role models. Sports person are expected to behave a certain way in the spotlight. If a sports person maintains a clean record, this gives the youth the right kind of message that drugs and performance enhancers are not required to become winners. Icons are everywhere, it all depends on what we wnat to see in our icons.”

Chief Minister, Shri Tarun Gogoi and MC Mary Kom along with members of the Eclectic Group, Managing
Director Tanushree Hazarika, Directors Gaurav Gogoi and Bibha Hazarika and Executive editor, Agamonee Barbaruah displayed the new magazine infront of the audience.
Among the dignitaries were also present, A K Pansari, Chairman, Royal Group of institutions.

PRESS RELEASE & INVITE

Round Table Conference

INTERFACE-Dialogue Women and Government
Sub-theme 1: Strategizing To Ensure Land Ownership for Women

16 November 2012, Board Room, Constitution Club, Rafi Marg, New Delhi, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm

INTERFACE-Dialogue Women and Government Sub-theme 1: Strategizing To Ensure Land Ownership for Women

INTERFACE-Dialogue Women and Government
Sub-theme 1: Strategizing To Ensure Land Ownership for Women

Governance can be seen as the exercise of economic, political and administrative authority to manage a country’s affairs at all levels. It comprises the mechanisms, processes and institutions through which citizens and groups articulate their interests, exercise their legal rights, meet their obligations and mediate their differences.

Women face numerous obstacles in achieving representation in governance. Their participation has been limited by the assumption that women’s proper sphere is the “private” sphere. Whereas the “public” domain is one of political authority and contestation, the “private” realm is associated with the family and the home. By relegating women to the private sphere, their ability to enter the political arena is curtailed. With only 10.8 per cent of women representation in the Lok Sabha and 10.3 per cent in the Rajya Sabha, India ranks 98 in the world, according to the data released by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), an international group that works for promoting democracy, peace and co-operation in the world. In order to bring changes to socio-economic and political processes, women need to interface/dialogue with government at all levels.

The economic reality that Indian women possess less than 1% of agricultural land and few have control over own lands, led IWID to explore strategies to ensure agricultural land for rural women with ‘access and control’ over land. IWID identified more than individual ownership, collective farming by women will be an effective strategy towards ‘access and control’ of land by women and to build stronger ‘women alliance/unity’ which also will be a good strategy to build ‘Women Farmers’ body, an important political capacity of rural women.

India has signed in CEDAW and pledged to eliminate discrimination against women through plans, schemes, policy and legislation. It is important to lobby with Govt. to negotiate for rural women.

The National campaign for Women Farmers and Collective farming serves as a bridge between illiterate exploited rural women and educated sensitive urban women. This bridge will strengthen women alliance/unity to negotiate space in governance and bring equality to women

It is important to build a strong women forum/ group to negotiate and create space to lobby for land rights for women in the capital city of India.

In order to bring changes to socio-economic and political processes, women need to interface/dialogue with government at all levels. In order to do this; we are convening a one day round table conference on the topic “INTERFACE-Dialogue Women and Government:Sub-theme 1: Strategizing To Ensure Land Ownership for Women” on 16th November at Board Room, Constitution Club, Rafi Marg, New Delhi.

PRESS STATEMENT
Dated Tahamzam, 11th November, 2012

Our attention is drawn to the news item on the allotment of funds for Check drawal Authority under the PWD on communal lines by the Government of Manipur whereby Chandel, Tamenglong and Ukhrul districts were omitted and insignificant amount provided for Senapati district. Relevant documents made available to us throws up the following picture –

1. Amt allotted to 7 Divisions in the valley districts-
a) Bridge Division Rs 0.47 crores
b) Imphal East Division Rs 0.68 crores
c) Imphal West Division Rs. 1.19 crores
d) Highway South Division Rs. 1.07 crores
e) Bishnupur Division Rs. 0.81 crores
f) Thoubal Division Rs 1.49 crores
g) Jiribam Division Rs 0.00 crores

2. Amt allotted to Churachandpur division Rs 1.24 crores
3. Amt allotted to Sadar Hills division Rs 1.55 crores
4. Amt allotted to Senapati division Rs 0.72 crores
5. Amt allotted to Chandel division Rs 0.00 crores
6. Amt allotted to Tamenglong division Rs 0.00 crores
7. Amt allotted to Ukhrul division Rs 0.00 crores

The Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur solemnly declares on the 10th November, 2012 that the State Government is committed to the development of the hill districts in view of their special needs while addressing some students at Senapati. But the figures above speaks volume of the blatant communalism that informs every decision of the Government of Manipur. Where is the developments for the hills to take care of its special needs in the light of hard facts .

UNC

UNC

The Nagas and tribals can never expect a fair deal now or in the future from the Government of Manipur. There are 7 Divisions for the mere 2238 sq kms of the 4 valley districts and only 6 Divisions for the 5 hill districts of 20089 sq kms. Tribal population which is 41% of the state’s total has only 20 MLAs who represent an average electorate of 34,180 each while the 40 MLAs from the valley represents an average of only 25,575 electorates and just 58% of the population. The victimisations and suppression that arises from this skewed and engineered arrangement is across the board – be it with bureaucrats, professionals or other employees, contractors & businessmen, development, education, sports, employment . . . In the name of law and order every function is shut down in the hills and the development of the hills takes place in the valley where normalcy reigns with more than 20-30 armed groups.

The only option is the peaceful parting of ways in good neighbourliness. It is not narrow or parochial politics and the tribals of the state in general will remain silent in the face of this stark reality only to their own peril. Every Naga, where ever they are positioned must therefore take up ownership of the movement for securing an alternative arrangement outside the Government of Manipur pending settlement of the Indo-Naga issue.

Connecting The Dots By Tinky Ningombam

This last week, I was met with a rather unusual request from a friend of mine. He insisted that I read his book and give an honest opinion. I did try to reason with him against it. Being honest has its risks; we have all been there, haven’t we? Having an opinion about everything has become a bane for most. One does walk on tightropes every moment of the way.

Bobo Meitei

I speak of the book “Tales of Human Mischief and Other Stories “by Nameirakpam Bobo Meitei. As one move out of a closed shell into the bright, one normally recreates this hallmark experience by narrating the scheme of events as a protagonist, an observer. What I liked in the book was the attempt in personal observation and the satire on the encounters in life.
I believe that in every work of art, one can see a bit of the creator. It is hence a really overwhelming experience to display one’s work of art in whichever form it manifests. And this is perhaps the hardest part of it all, not the act of creating, but the display. As when one does so, it automatically envisages criticism. It invites judgments.

Most of Bobo’s stories are grim. One can see certain underlying motifs of the prevailing violence and atrocities that the people in the state have been engulfed in. It takes you to a familiar landscaping, the inherent sentiments that one feels as peoples who have felt similar hopelessness and heard of similar tragedies that intrudes normal life.

The irony of writing in a foreign language is the price that one has to pay in diluting the essence of the word. Words sometimes get lost in translation. Local dialects suffer from the shortcomings of being too easily dissociated. Which also explains why most writers prefer to write locally rather take up the harder route of story-telling in another. Though every language has its limitations.

This book is meant for the thinking lot as the stories evoke multiple truths. Every character sketch projects an image that we have been familiar with before in some episode of our lives, enabling a ready connect. And as if by conscious choice, the author hardly paints a picture of the characters and yet one clearly visualizes and creates one’s own images through the conversations that they have. What one also sees in the book is a romantic recreation of escapism, a yearning to undo the wrongs, the urge to start a new journey. And perhaps a sense of longing to escape the harsh vagaries of life. Though most stories end abruptly, rightfully so. If one reads to find answers to the questions, this is not the place to find it. What one does leave with are musings and retrospections.

One cannot escape the seemingly autobiographical narrative. And one gets startled to sense an almost invisible and yet reckless “sutradhaar”, a voice, running amock through the stories, sometimes screaming and sometimes whispering every now and then. The voice hinting to something more than just the stories; perhaps calling for some answers for itself too. The disappointment was in the wanton constructions of words and phrases that lacked structure. Moreover, what one constantly finds is impatience in the narration. Some of the words seemed out of place. Expressions became quite repetitive and descriptions almost incomplete.

Above all that is said however, this first literary attempt by a genuinely creative individual like Bobo Meitei is reassurance for the many young writers that are brave to face the world. And as I wish him the best for his second book, I end with a fabulous quote from the movie “Ratatouille (2007)“ by none other than the critic of critics “Monsieur Anton Ego”.

“Anton Ego: In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. There are more and more reasons to Say No to Coal in Manipur

As a part of the campaign National Day of Action on Coal to voice against use of coal as major of energy, a campaign entitled “Say No to Coal in Manipur” was organized at Imphal, the capital city of Manipur state on 10th November 2012. A drawing competition on the theme “Climate Change in Manipur” was organized for the students staying at Destitute Children Home, Dewlahland in Imphal West District.

A street awareness campaign was organized at Bir Tikendrajit Road in Imphal West District where pamphlets were distributed and petition was signed by public to prefer renewable energy than coal which pollute environment. The public were made aware of the environmental pollution and other climatic disasters that coal can create. There is report that state government of Manipur is planning to undertake mining of coal that will feed a coal power plant of at least 500 MW. If the project is taken up, it will pollute the air, water and soil which will affect the climate, productivity of crops and other environmental as well as health related problems.
