IMPHAL November 9: Several civil organizations including the Just Peace Foundation will appeal the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit which will commence in Maldives tomorrow to address militarization and the Sharmila issue.

A declaration of the JPF has appealed to the summit to consider the accelerated militarization in the South Asian region in the name of counter terrorism. It has further mentioned that the military forces are taking over the developmental activities including the mega development projects and extractive mining, devastation of natural resources, displacing and further marginalizing the indigenous peoples inhabiting the region.

It further mentioned that the groups salute the resilience of Irom Sharmila as she enters her twelfth year of hunger strike demanding repeal of AFSPA and considers her as a symbol of struggle for justice. It has also condemned the apathy to take a proper favourable decision on AFSPA, in spite of several official committees and commissions of the government and international bodies like the UN, recommending immediate appeal of AFSPA.

JPF calls upon the governments of South Asia to immediately halt the futile process of militarization generating a spiral of insecurity and to redirect its resources and energy to build genuine democratic institutions to ensure the human security including education, health, housing and other welfare of the people.

Death Wish Grandeur

Gen. George S Patton, the controversial American general during the Second World War, whose memory… more »

Gen. George S Patton, the controversial American general during the Second World War, whose memory still commands a fan following which runs into millions, (search his name on any good search engine on the internet to be convinced of this), had this piece of advice, or some say order, for his soldiers: “I don’t want any of you dying for your country. I want the enemies to die for their country.” The earthy, even if a little reckless charm of the man who must rank as one of the most endearing icons of the last century, is evident in this remark that snuffs out the romance of martyrdom in just one go. In an ironic tribute to his distaste for romance, the man considered to be one of America’s greatest Generals had to face the court martial after the war for physically assaulting one of his own soldiers on the eve of a major battle in the North African deserts for crying and admitting he was afraid and did not want to fight. The military commander after whose name the famous Patton Tank is christened, was indeed the anticlimax of the popular notions of heroism and martyrdom, and very much the opposite of the fire that drives suicide bombers to blast themselves up in their fanatical belief that they would have not only advanced the cause they fight for, but earned themselves an eternity in paradise after life.

While we admire the guts of martyrs and are overawed by their sense of sacrifice, we cannot always condone or encourage people to take their path. Our reservation is especially for the kind of almost voyeuristic obsession amongst people to nudge the society to throw up martyrs. We respect the martyrs, but are frightfully uneasy about the “martyrdom complex” that makes societies crave to see martyrs and treat the phenomenon as the proof of “manly” courage. Martyrdom must be the means to achieve a cause only when there are no other options left, and not the cause itself. It must be a means and not an end. We do believe martyrs and heroes will be thrown up by history on its own when the situation so demands it but we should not drive our young men and women to fruitless and even tragic martyrdom. Even in desperate situations, we believe there is always room for the kind of down to earth pragmatism of Gen Patton.

We have one person in particular in mind, and a string of events in Manipur in the recent past when we ruminate on the subject of martyrdom. There is a brave young lady, Irom Sharmila who has been on a fast for almost four years now demanding the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. While her courage is awe inspiring, and her cause just, we still feel those in the gallery have no right to egg her on to die and be martyred. Somebody with her kind of guts can do much more as a living activist for justice, than as a dead martyr. We must work for ways for the revocation of the AFSPA, more importantly, the return of peace in the state relentlessly, but Sharmila must be made to live. We again are awestruck by the self immolation bid by the five brave youth three days ago in front of the chief minister’s office, but we are equally alarmed by the trend. If tomorrow suicide bombers emerge from our midst, rather than be proud, we would be grief stricken. It is of relevance that suicide bombers anywhere have not advanced the cause for which they fight, and if they have made a difference to the body politics of any nation, it has been by way of hardening the state response to the struggles for their causes. Whenever we are overwhelmed by the grandeur of the “death wish” of brave men and women like Sharmila and the five who sought to burn themselves alive for causes that are far from private, we pinch ourselves awake with Gen Patton’s pragmatism. We remind ourselves that living heroes are far more desirable than dead martyrs.

Women dues – Meitei society is a deeply sexist society

By Raju Athokpam Marriages are solemnised between the two persons they addressed each other as… more »

By Raju Athokpam

Marriages are solemnised between the two persons they addressed each other as their better half and a life long companion in all walks of life. But right from the very marriage day, these young people are made to go through a series of gender inequality customs. On the marriage day, the husband dines before his wife and she is made to dine from the left-outs of her husband’s plate. Talking a spoon of food from the used plate and to continue the dinner from her plate, is although becoming a contemporary trend. However, the questionable thing is the underlying theme of woman’s subjugation and male’s chauvinism. The wife is not allowed to eat with her husband by sharing the same curry or any other eatables. When in menstrual cycle, she is even not allowed to serve a cup of tea to her husband, let us forget her going in kitchen and preparing it. During this period, she is not allowed to enter kitchen, touch utensils etc. In other times, she is equally prevented from the mentioned activities unless she has taken a bath. All these activities, if conducted, are treated as desecration. One of the most barbaric forms of human nature, the ‘untouchable’ still prevails in our Meitei society in a disguised form.

There has been a mix of religion and other social institutions. When a woman is suppressed by the custom, the act is being prejudiced and the reason put forward is mostly on the man’s fate. In other words, her breaking of the defined tradition will lead to the husband’s ill luck. Most societies do have unexplained customs which they ‘valued’, but the surprising factor in our case is that, there is no vice versa. Objectively speaking, for good or for bad, if a tradition is maintained, it should be applied to all, irrespective of sex. The gender inequality has been perpetuated by manipulating it on religion.

One reform can be thought by bringing a consensus on a religion-culture dichotomy and inculcate the public on the agreed consensus. For example, mopping the floor should be custom and praying is religion. Even the ways of praying can be custom. Similarly, when the emancipation is achieved from various other religious-cultural practices, the reform in custom will be relatively easier as it will be free from ‘fundamental’ aspects.

God is one and all the religions are His manifestations. No religion will teach discrimination but justice. A taboo should be free from religion. The Truth is obscured, when religion is mixed with taboo. In Meitei mythology, the Goddess “Panthoibi” signifies the high status of women in the society. The name says: “Pan”- taibangpan (universe), “thoi”-athoibi (winner), “bi/pi”- pokpi (gives birth). In the test of time, an opposite turn had occurred somewhere and women were left behind. Historically, the “Nupilan”, the “Ema Market”, the “Meira paibi” etc do say a lot on woman’s participation on public affairs, but that’s only political. The social and cultural aspects are still in stone age.

The projection of female as a flower, the association of her with red/pink colour, their coolness character as that of moon; all leads to a child girl’s cognitive construct that she should be shy in nature, be submissive, etc and on the other hand; boys are taught to be outspoken, be smart, be brave, be a risk-taker etc. As these basic differences have been taught since a child is born, it is not surprising to see that it is mostly the women who have maintained domestic gender inequality. Mother’s love to father and sons for their well being, sister’s love to brothers and father, wife’s love to husband etc which is above all, the most beautiful human nature. But the love is adulterated with superstitions and the whole discussion of this article is the manifestations of this adulteration. We should try a totally different means to capture and continue this root emotion, the love.

Chauvinism is culturally inhibited amongst men. Some people tease their friends as adha-mora, which nearest meaning would be an unholy moron. Such words can be heard, when the society feels that a man is living under the whims of his wife. Such prejudice, in most cases, later came out to be a gender neutral family. Among men, outside their family, they will make mockery of females as fools, hang out to nearby pan-dukan and woo woman shopkeepers surreptitiously. The shopkeepers, in order to sell a cigarette extra, would somehow accept the gestures. Aware of these facts and to avoid unwanted situations, usually her husband or mother-in-law accompanies her from a distance. They also try to introduce themselves impressively, real or fact, to her. They seldom accept returned changes/coins when the cigarette bill is paid to a beautiful shopkeeper. The mentioned situation is much uglier in traditional wine vendors, mostly in tribal community, when these people go there to booze.

I’m not a total reformist nor do I claim that our history has been full of taboo. Rather, I would like to cause to take up a difficult task of segregating the good tradition and preserving it and at the same time reform certain taboos and outdated customs, modernising them, so that the rich culture is preserved at its best as ‘social dynamics’ rolls by. Every Meitei man and woman will be happier of their culture.

Yashwant Sinha demands airlifting of essential commodities to state

IMPHAL, Nov 8 (Newmai News Network): Lok Sabha MP hailing from BJP and former union… more »

IMPHAL, Nov 8 (Newmai News Network): Lok Sabha MP hailing from BJP and former union finance minister Yashwant Sinha on Tuesday said the government of India and state government of Manipur should make available adequate essential commodities in Manipur if they are not able to stop the ongoing economic blockade on National Highways.

Yashwant was speaking at a “One-day Intellectual Meet of Manipur Vision 2025″ at Classic Hotel, Imphal today.

He said if the ongoing 100 days economic blockade on highways were imposed on other cities like Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, etc. things might have been totally different in the country.

However, he said, “Democracy should be maintained at all cost. A voting right of an individual should not be allowed to take away or buy out. We will be losing the essence of democracy if the trend goes like this.”

The national BJP will take up the Manipur issue in the coming winter session of Parliament in its possible strongest way, the BJP leader said.

Coming on the topic of the meet, Yashwant, who is on a two-day visit to the state, asserted that no vision document can be achieved success if law and order is not maintained in the state.

“If the government of India and government of Manipur are unable to stop economic blockade then they should make available of adequate essential commodities in the state”, demanded Yashwant at the discussion organize by Manipur Pradesh BJP.

They should make all possible arrangements to facilitate airlifting of goods if they are not able to open up the blockade. They should not let the people suffer any more, he added.

Prakash Javedkar, BJP national spokesperson and election in-charge of Manipur state, who was also attending the meet sarcastically said, “There are 30 plus underground groups here in Manipur and the ‘plus’ is the government led by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.

However, he said Manipur is not only a state where gun culture, rampant corruption and extortion are occurred but it is also very rich in culture, history and has a lot of intellectuals.

“Manipur has the potential to change within a decade under the “Manipur Vision 2025″ but the current situation is really hopeless.”

Bandh and blockade are a daily routine in Manipur but this time a new thing has also come up in the State and that is “counter economic blockade over economic blockade.” It is an unprecedented state of affair which has never happened before, Javedkar said.

“What is the central government doing when the economic blockade has entered its 100th day today? Just sending of money is not enough.”

The BJP spokesperson also recalled Chief Minister Ibobi’s statement when he said the other day that additional security forces would be sent to escort goods laden trucks on highways. Javedkar also questioned as to why he is taking three months in taking up such step.

In Manipur, the ministers, MLAs and even police officers are subjected to pay money to militant organizations, he alleged.

“Manipur can become a tourism hub, IT hub and a gateway of Southeast Asia just in case the law and order is kept under control”, suggested Javedkar.

He also lauded the State and said it does not need to suffer just like we suffered during the British rule as it has its own proud history, independence and full of culture.

Yashwant Sinha was accompanied by Prakash Javedkar and Northeasst in-charge Chandrashekhar Rao in the visit.

From Kaimuanthang
LAMKA, October 8 : The works minister K Ranjit Singh  during an inaugural function of the Saipum village bridge in Churachandpur district today said that the Congress will come back to power by getting an absolute majority of 45 out of the total 60 seats in the coming Manipur state assembly.

While addressing the gathering, he further said that though to err is human and man may commit mistakes as a human being out of his zeal, it is the Congress party itself which has the best chance of coming back to power.

While disclosing that the bridge which was inaugurated today is the third of its kind with one at Saidan village , the second at Buoljol and the one inaugurated today, he said the fourth has been proposed at Tuithapi and Kanan veng across the Tuitha river.

Manipur Cycle Club to introduce `rent a cycle` in Imphal

IMPHAL, November 8: “Introduction of renting bicycles in university campuses would help in minimizing crime rates as criminals hardly use bicycles while committing crimes”, said European Manipuri Association (EMA) representative Okram Bishwajit while sharing his European experience on using bicycles.

Bishwajit who hails from Thoubal district headquarter made the comment during a recent interaction with media persons and members of Manipur Cycle Club (MCC), a club of bicycle enthusiasts here to mitigate the challenges arising out of urbanization, environmental degradation besides health and economy issues in the state, in Imphal.

“This is not the end. It is estimated that at least 2 grams of carbon could be reduced if one person uses bicycle. So imagine if just 10 percent of India’s billion population used bicycles in the climate change era”, said researcher Bishwajit, who works in an Ireland based company. “A tiny state like Manipur can also save at least Rs 5 crores a year if we could introduce

bicycles to just 10,000 individuals of the total Manipur population of 27 lakh ( 2011 census) who usually spends Rs 50 on bus or auto-rickshaw fares a day as their mode of transport.”

Interestingly those who use bicycles regularly could also reduce their aging factors too, he added and further appealed “So let’s make Manipur as bicycle capital of the country like Netherland, the cycle capital in Europe”.

Meanwhile MCC is all set to introduce ‘Rent a Cycle’ facility as part of its cycle promotion approach in Imphal. “We’ll be introducing the facility at the Kangla Fort for the visitors. A proposal has also been submitted to declare Kangla a carbon free zone to preserve its cultural heritage and delicate vegetation inside the campus”, Deben Bachaspatimayum, MCC president.

MCC vice-president, Ramananda Wangkheirakpam elaborating on the said facility said visitors who love to see the historic site could get the facility (Rs 10 per bicycle per day) at the three Kangla gates only after the formal launching of the facility in association with environment and ecology wing of the state forest department on November 15.

“We’re also planning to expand at major bus parkings if the experiment becomes a success”, added the key functionary of MCC which had been fighting for a cycle lane and parking facilities in Imphal.

“We’re also targeting the Manipur University campus.” Having a total of 1,98,889 registered vehicles of which 1,39,675 are two wheelers last year, Manipur’s transport department officially receives 35 applications for registration on an average daily this year.

MCC in collaboration with Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association is scheduled to conduct a five-day bicycle expedition to important places including Keibul Lamjao national park in Bishnupur district in the forthcoming 10 day Manipur Sangai festival beginning from November 21.

On November 5, 2000, 38 year old poet and activist Sharmila began her indefinite hunger strike after she heard the killing of ten people by Assam Rifles in Malom, on the outskirts Imphal three days ago, to have the act, which provides unlimited powers to security forces to shoot at sight and arrest anybody without a warrant, repealed.

“It’s 11 years now, but there’s no justice. We want justice while we’re alive. So AFSPA should go so that such incident don’t repeat in future”, said fish farmer Sinam Kamal, 34, b/o two victims-teacher Robinson, a 1987 child bravery awardee and student Chandramani of Malom village in Imphal west district. Robinson was the lone bread earner of the family when he was killed.

Since then we continued to struggle for our studies in diverse fields, Kamal added. The government is also yet to provide a job to the family.

But it is learnt that family members of two other victims-G Bapu of Lairenjam village and Ksh Inaocha of Malom village both in Imphal west, out of the ten victims, have already passed away without getting justice. Other victims are L Sana(60) of Kabowakching, O Sanayaima, 50, resident of Nambol, K Bijoy, 39, resident of Laimapokpam, A Raghumani, 34 of Nambol Naorem, T Shantikumar, 19, and S Prakash,18, both from Malom.

“We didn’t feel much about AFSPA though we’re from the victim’s families unlike Sharmila in the beginning.

But she has a different courage. She is a kind of Goddess to us.” feels Kamal.

Sharing a similar sentiment, Tokpam Samarendra, 70, father of another victim Shantikumar also demanded removal of the Act so that his son’s soul can rest in peace.

Along with the victim’s families and relatives, nearly a thousand residents from Malom in their mourning attire for the first time joined the day long nation-wide fast to commemorate Sharmila’s struggle and the 53 years of struggle in the Northeast and 20 years in Jammu &Kashmir, on Saturday.
