Loktak Project & corporate unaccountability in Manipur

Of the most ambitious and controversial mega projects in Manipur, the 105 MW Loktak Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project (Loktak Project) hit news headlines in early August 2017, again for wrong reasons. Several media establishments published the non-existence of memorandum of understanding or agreement (MoU) on Loktak Project between the Government of Manipur and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), as confirmed by the NHPC on 9 May 2017 in response to an RTI filed by Mr. Joy Haobijam of Thanga, Manipur. The arsoning of floating huts in Loktak Wetlands and the merciless brutality unleashed by the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) and the Manipur Police in November 2011 and the scandalous corruption in the cleaning of ‘Phumdi’, floating biomass in Loktak Wetlands involving the K-Pro company, also hits news headlines in recent years.

Imphal, Aug 13: The Swimming Federation of India condoled the demise of the honorary secretary of the Kerala Aquatic Association (KSA), K Babu, who expired due to heart attack at a swimming pool for the Kerala State Aquatic Championships this morning, according to a statement from the federation. Vikramjit lose to Srinivasa Rao in All India Open Chess

Imphal, Aug 13: State chess player Vikramjit (7.5) ended his chance at the finals of the 1st NITHM All India Open Fide Rating Chess tournament in Hyderabad after losing to M Srinivasa Rao (8.0) of Andhra Pradesh.
In Round 6, Vikramjit (5.5) drew with A Balkrishan (5.5) of Karnataka and defeated N Lokesh (6.0) of Tamil Nadu in Round 8. Meanwhile, Telangana’s M. Chakravarthy Reddy clinched the championship title, winning Rs 1,00,000 after a tie-breaker.

RUSS, HSC make progress in CCpur Super Division league

Churachandpur, Aug 11: The Rangers United Soccer Star (RUSS) defeated Lamka Youth Club by 2-1 in the first match while Headquarter Sports Club edged past Gothal Youth Club by the same margin of 2-1 in the L Simte Memorial Super Division Football league 2017 today.
Paomon and Kapmanthang scored the winning goals for RUSS in the 33rd and 54th minutes of the game. Later in the second match of the day, Ajay and Jamthinlang netted the goals for HSC in the 65th and 77th minutes.
