IMPHAL, April 6: The indefinite Manipur bandh called by the Dr Ningombam Satyabama Joint Action Committee evoked a near total effect in Imphal, with normal life being paralyzed due to the strike.

Satyabama, a Junior Research Fellow of DBT Project in Pathology at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, was found dead in a trench drain in Bashikhong Wangkhei Laoumanbi yesterday afternoon. The 31-year-old doctor was the daughter of N Tomba, a resident of Kakwa Laishram Leikai Salungba Leirak.
According to the preliminary post mortem report on the death of Satyabama that was conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), she was strangled and killed. DGP Y Joykumar, Thongju constituency MLA Th Bishorjit and other police officials also visited JNIMS in connection with the post mortem examination.
Since early morning today, a large number of bandh supporters, mostly from her locality, including the JAC blocked the National Highway-2 (Imphal-Moreh road) at Kakwa bazaar. They put timbers and burnt tyres on the road to stop traffic. The strike was affective in many parts of the capital Imphal and other districts too. Vehicles were off the road and Government establishments were shut due to the general strike in Imphal.

Although the JAC has exempted educational institutions from the purview of the bandh, no students were seen going for class. Business establishments were also paralyzed due to the strike.Hundreds of women from several women organizations and members of the Satyabama JAC took out a rally amidst the bandh. It started from her native place Kakwa in the afternoon. However, the police prevented them from further movement at Singjamei Chingamakhong.

Later on, they organized a public meeting wherein, leaders of women social organizations condemned Manipur Government in the strongest terms for its alleged slackness over frequent crimes against women in the state.

They chanted slogans like “Ibobi Government Kills Women” and “Punish Women Killers.” The JAC later called on with Home Minister Gaikhangam and DGP Joykumar at Imphal in the afternoon wherein the DGP assured that the culprits would be arrested within three days. He also said a special police team has been entrusted with the task of arresting the culprits.

However, the JAC vowed that it would continue with the ongoing indefinite strike  and that it was ready to meet with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on the issue after he returns from New Delhi.

By Dr Th.Munindro Singh, Director Planning, Govt. Of Manipur

I have been reading Dr Th. Munindro’s ‘Amanba Yum’, his own collection of Poems, for some months now. May be I am not an anthologist or a poet myself, but I do have a taste for poems that provoke my heart and soul; that awaken me; that reminds me of things that is sleeping into oblivion. To confess, I am not a mad fan of poems and have never collected them regularly except when I am recommended and referred to. But, one reason I like to read poems is to understand the ‘cause’ of the poem that turns me on as I just said earlier .

Yes, the cause of the poem! In 19 century, Victor Hugo’s cause for his poem was mostly ‘freedom’ e.g. The Grave and the Rose; W.B.Yeats about ‘Irish Nationalism’ e.g. A Dream of Deaths; and Rabindranath Tagor for ‘freedom and liberty, Indian nationalism’, e.g. The Geetanjali. Among the contemporary international poets, Billy Collins poems in ‘Candle Hat’ are interesting for his random thoughts, plain and simplicity. Not to forget to mention is Elizabeth Alexander’s poems, Autumn Passage that bristle with irresistible quality of a world seen fresh. Last but not the least I also like the poems written by Dr Daisaku Ikeda of Japan, ‘Like the Sun rising’ and Dr Robert Schuler of USA, ‘God Always Answers Prayers’, for their works that uplift my entire being completely to a different state.

Due to my work and life situation, I have not had the good fortune of reading and absorbing many of colourful Manipuri poems, both classical and contemporary. But, solely on my own reflection and experience of few that I had read long ago, I found this own collections of poems by Dr Munindro a fascinating manifestation of his own perspective of life; ‘the cause of a life’ in essence. To read with understanding, the peculiar personal, historical and philosophical contexts of Dr Munindro and Manipur are essential for a greater appreciation of the poems. His poems was born out when the left brain meets the right brain: Dr Munindro, a mathematician, the incumbent planning director of Manipur, wrote his heart out in a creative poem, ‘Amanba Yum’, in his own self reflection about the ‘life’ our society , our people and our environment.

The poet ooze out his heart against the defilement of what he saw as culturally and socially vital, and which came to form a vision of personal dissonance with the characters of his time. Dr Munindro’s poem shows the evolution, underneath the surface of Manipur’s society, that is loosening the fabrics of our culture and the bonds that should be, all for the cause of ‘harmonious’ society, environment and life everyone is entitled to. Manipur, a harmonious state, is what we need now. The poet, solemnly, yet very indirectly cries for this cause with great mild intensity and passion. To some readers, this may sound un-spirited, dull or lifeless, but to me the very cause of the collection is to say what it is, at the least it captures my imagination this way.

The poet, perhaps, felt very little about the need to use conventional rules of writing a poem as his instinct was to go uninterrupted, undisturbed and say simply what he wanted to say. Breaking the law of classical rules for poetry writing, Dr Munindro has presented his sublime thoughts in a most unconventional but kind of contemporary form. Every poem lovers must try this collection for a different taste of unconventional, contemporary poetries; there is a unique music in it still: a fusion of logic and creativity.

IMPHAL, April 6 (NNN): All Zeliangrong Students Union (AZSU), Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) and Zeliangrong Students Union, Manipur (ZSUM) warned today that the Zeliangrong people are ready to face any eventuality to secure the release of school girl Alice Kamei from the RPF/PLA custody.

They then said that the revelation of the police after arresting two women recruiters of the RPF/PLA has proved that school girl Alice Kamei did not join the militant outfit on her own volition. “Elangbam Rojita @ Tekpi and Elangbam Ongbi Thoinu who are as per police statement is involved in the kidnapping of the minor school girl were arrested from Hiyanglam Awang Leikai along with a huge amount of money amounting Rs 30,000 which is alleged to have been received from RPF/PLA as payment for recruitment has revealed that the minor school girl Alice Kamei did not go willingly to the RPF/PLA fold. The claim of the RPF/PLA stating that the minor school girl had joined the underground organization on her own volition has totally been contradicted by the revelation of the two women who were arrested by the Thoubal district police commando team, hence the underground RPF/PLA had no justifiable ground to detain the minor school girl in their custody for any longer. There is apprehension that the minor school girl who is now captive in the custody of RPF/PLA might be facing hardships in various ways,” the AZSU, ZYF and ZSUM today.

Even after RPF/PLA had announced in the public domain that the minor school girl who is in their custody is less than 18 years but continue to remain in captivity is a total violation of international law and infringement upon the rights and liberty of a child to live freely without fear, denial of the child right’s to education also restricted and prohibited her free movement. The RPF/PLA continuing to detain the minor school girl without any justifiable reason has potential to cause unwanted consequences considering the situation where the people are ready for any eventuality, the

The AZSU, ZYF and ZSUM said with the 1st phase of public democratic agitation of 48 hours total blockade on National Highways and the 2nd phase of sit-in-protest in Imphal East district, Imphal West district, Bishnupur and Churachandpur have ended but the RPF/PLA`s adamant stand not to release Alice Kamei has signified the outfit`s immaturity, incapable to understand the people voice, absence of organizational procedures on such issue.

“The unjustified captivity of the minor school girl is suspicious to incitement of turmoil in the region. The Zeliangrong people will chalk out a specific strategy to strike and take up intense form of democratic agitation to secure release of the minor school girl from the RPF/PLA custody. The nature and mode of public democratic agitation will be taken during the next public meeting which will be held shortly. The action of Thoubal district police commando arresting two involved persons into the case is commendable by Zeliangrong people in particular and every reasoning and right thinking people in general,” the AZSU, ZYF and ZSUM added.
