Chakouba held with the motto of empowering PWDs

5th Ningol Chakouba programme cum one day conference on the empowerment of persons with disabilities was held yesterday at Sagolband Tera Keithel, Imphal West. The conference was held especially for women with disabilities and orphan children.

The programme was sponsored by Imphal West District Legal Service Authority and North East India Development Party (NEIDP), and organised jointly by Manipur State Legal Services Authority, Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently-abled Persons Manipur, Disabled Development Association and Northern Disabilities Institute.

The function was attended by State Disabilities Commissioner, R.K. Kumarjit Singh, chairman of Imphal West District Legal Service Authority, Sapam Kunjakeshor, vice-president of NEIDP, Ch.Opendro Singh, former president of Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently-abled Persons Manipur as presidium members of the function.

Gifts were presented to the womenfolk especially to differently abled women present at the programme and a feast was served after the conference.

It may be recalled, Ningol Chakouba is an important festival of Manipur, and because of its secular nature, its popularity is increasing.

Chakouba is non-religious. It is instead a celebration of fraternal ties in which married women return to her  parental home for a meal with parents and male siblings.
