Malaria cases at Meghalaya

Shillong, June 12 (NNN): “Meghalaya accounts for 20 per cent of malaria cases of those reported from the north-east states annually,” Meghalaya deputy chief minister informed at an advocacy workshop organized by the Meghalaya State Vector Borne Disease Control Society, in collaboration with the state health department. Inaugurating the workshop, Deputy Chief Minister, in-charge health, Rowell Lyngdoh, emphasized on creating awareness among the people, especially those living in the rural areas on measures to avoid malaria.
With a substantial number of students taking part in the workshop, resource persons, who addressed the gathering, emphasized on involving the student community on spreading awareness on the “dos and don’ts” of malaria. The workshop laid emphasis on the spraying of DDT in households in order to eliminate mosquitoes, the primary carriers of malaria.
“The Garo hill districts in Meghalaya persistently contributed most cases and malaria-attributable deaths, and deserve priority for strengthening interventions. The problem is complex along international borders of the northeast due to poor inter-country coordinated vector control interventions, illiteracy, difficult terrain and poor access to healthcare services,” a health official pointed out. The highest death toll of 98 in 2007 was ascribed to focal disease outbreaks along Indo-Bangla border, and every single death was confirmed to be due to malaria spread by mosquitoes which were believed to be multi-drug resistant.
“Most death cases that were preventable occurred of complications arising due to late reporting and consequent delayed treatment,” a report by an international agency on the malaria scenario in the Northeast read.
With malaria being the number one killer disease in Meghalaya, authorities Tuesday emphasized on spreading awareness on the “dos and don’ts” to control the outbreak of the “deadly disease.” Malaria is endemic in the Garo hills of Meghalaya, and death cases are reported annually. “Plasmodium falciparum, which is the major parasite, is solely responsible for each malaria-attributable death case. The Garo hills are categorized high-risk for drug-resistant malaria,” says an official in the state health department.

Time to prepare roadmad to industrialise Manipur : Governor

Mail News Service
Imphal, June 13 : Governor, Gurbhachan Jagat today gave the Governor’s Best Entrepreneur’s Award and other AMEA Outstanding Awards.
He said, “Entrepreneur development is an important key to economic development of a country. Entrepreneurs not only provide self employment but also provide job opportunities for others. Unemployment among the youth and the resulting sense of frustration is a central problem in the country especially in the North East including Manipur where the opportunities are limited. Serious efforts have been made to mitigate the unemployment problems in this region but the initiatives will take time to show any tangible results on the ground. There is a need for innovative and participatory approach to attract experts in this field.
No State can develop without outstanding contributions by the entrepreneurs, who are, in reality, the captains of the industrial sector. He made a reference to a meaningful comment by the Political Agent of Manipur long back in 1879 on the excellence of Manipuri manufacture: “The more I see them, the more I am impressed with the excellence of the Manipur cotton manufacturers, which are all of first-rate quality and very cheap, when their weight is considered”. (E W. Dun: Gazetteer of Manipur P 62/63) That Manipur State was not inferior to any other States at that time is substantiated by the fact that in 1881 Manipur was privileged with industrial class of 3042 duly aided by the commercial class of 15,433 of which 96.24 percent was accounted for by females. This industrial tradition is still alive. What is required is the development of institutional mechanisms to groom, enrich the industrial products to be globally competitive.
It was after 1990s that Manipur had to be fully prepared to meet the development changes following national policy of liberalization.
The industrial policy of 1996 was prepared to create a new environment and provide policy support. The inauguration of the Indo-Myanmar Border Trade on 12th April, 1995 underlined a new message of urgency for a structural change of State Economy.
All these expectations cannot be materialized in the absence of the determined, dedicated and devoted section of industrial entrepreneurs.
Keeping this background in view, the Governor’s Running Trophy for the best adjudged entrepreneur was instituted by , General K.V. Krishna Rao(Retd.). It was, indeed,,, an example of respect and regard for entrepreneurial spirit. The industrial entrepreneurs are, in fact, the agents of change. We have to admire and honour them.
Time has come for the Department of Commerce and Industries to prepare a new roadmap for industrializing Manipur through a sound policy of structured, Skill and Entrepreneurship Development.
A New Industrial Policy of Manipur capturing the realities in all perspectives could be a base for a new industrial intervention. We can think of the Manipur Industrial Vision, 2025 in compliance with the mandate of Look East Policy of India.

Imphal, June 13 NNN: The Communist Party of India (CPI) accused the UPA government at the Centre of making the people to live in hardship. The CPI said it would protest infront of the Parliament House at the end of this month for five days.
Speaking to media persons today in Imphal at the sideline of a reception function organised in honour of Sudhakar Reddy, the newly elected national general secretary of the CPI by the Manipur unit of the party, A.B Bardhan said the UPA government has been the cause of hardship being experienced by the common people in the country. He said the hiking of petroleum price for several times in a short span has brought the common to bite dust.
New national general secretary of CPI Sudhakar Reddy said the party would carry out sit in protest for five days infront of the Parliament House in the latter part of this month against the petroleum price hike.
Meanwhile, CPI stalwart A.B Bardhan said the party is all out to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur. He said the CPI will always be there opposing against any force that attempts to disintegrate the territorial integrity of Manipur.
On the Loitam Richard murder case, A B Bardhan said CPI general secretary Sudhakar Reddy and other party leaders will go to Bangalore on June 15 to press the Karnataka government for the handing over of the murder case to the CBI. ‘We know the student was assaulted brutally and murdered,” fumes A.B Bardhan. He expressed dissatisfaction over the Karnataka government move of handing over the case to the CID. “Why CID? The government should give the case to a more independent investigating agency like the CBI,” suggested Bardhan.
Today’s programme was attended by Manipur communists leaders including former minister M Nara and Mangi.
