EMA (European Manipuri Association) celebrated Ningol Chakouba on 14th November 2015 at Borstal, Kent in the UK, a day later than in Manipur. It was a hugely successful event with new and existing members gathering from all over Europe. Highlight of the event was the Food and most importantly Ningol Dokhina Thouram. Although the show was stolen by the kids shouting, running and playing around.

On the menu were mouth-watering Sareng thongba, Rou ataoba thongba, ooti, chagem pomba, khamen kanghau, thambou sinju, bora and other traditional items.

For the Dokhina, EMA Pibas were proud to be able to arrange for Muka Phee and Phanek for the Ningols, right from Manipur.

2015 EMA Ningol Chakouba also saw the rise of new talents. A drawing competition was held leading up to the event and winners were announced during the celebration with medals, certificates and winner’s trophies distributed. Children drew on the theme of “Phunga wari” and all entries were indeed praise worthy.

EMA also unveiled a calendar. The photos on it were contributed by EMA members and are of pictures taken by them in Manipur.

As the event concluded, members left with bulging bellies and smiles on their face, taking memories of the day entertained by the children with educational cum entertaining presentations.

The Annual Social Gathering and General Body Meeting for the year 2015 has just been concluded. The three day event which  began on the evening of May the 22nd  and concluded in the morning of May the 24th , was held at Hanley Swan, a  beautiful heritage village of English county of Worcestershire. Like every year the gathering was attended by Manipuri Diasporas residing in different parts of Europe, their friends and families.

A delicious treat of BBQ started the evening on Friday. But the main highlight of the gathering was the mouthwatering traditional Manipuri dishes prepared from ingredients and spices  brought from home. To mention a few, Sareng thongba, rau taothong, mangal ushoi ooti, soibum eromba, thambou singju were the key items of the feast . Besides the delicacies it was a funfilled sporting event as well ,with ‘Thabal chongba’ and a tough football match between General Secretary team and  Chairperson team . Gen Secy team won the match by 3-2 and lifted up the prestigious  EMA Cup 2015 which began annually since 2014. Children of EMA parents also had a good time in the pleasant sunshine of temperature 15-20 degrees Celsius.  They also enjoyed the most popular game, Chaphuthugaibi which seemed to be their favorite apart from them  organizing a fund raising campaign themselves  for orphans in Manipur. The fund  drive was conducted by selling their unused toys and eatables prepared with their parents.

The gathering also had their annual General Body Meeting and this year happens to be the election  year for  a new EMA Executive Committee. Members had an exhaustive discussions on how to make EMA better as a platform for Manipuri Diaspora’s residing in different parts of Europe. A mutual understanding was reached for  members to be actively  involved in exploring ways to incorporate EMA as an organization to the changing needs of the time which will help the association function better and in an effective way. Some amendments in the Constitution were also passed by the general body.  The General Body also elected a new Executive Committee members through proposals of candidates and voting . The EMA Executive Committee 2015-2017 are Chairperson – Dr. Krishnananda Sharma Shamurailatpam, General Secretary – Indrasekhar Mayengbam, Finance Secretary –  Sobita Khangembam , Information Secretary – Rajesh Sharma Hidangmayum,  Cultural Secretary – Bijaya Hijam and Sports Secretary – Deepak Takhelmayum.

The outgoing Chairperson, Mr Bishwajit Okram, thanked the outgoing committee members for selflessly working towards the upliftment of EMA as an orgnisation . He also thanked everyone for giving him the opportunity to serve the community and supporting him in many of the initiatives that he undertook during his tenure. In his speech, the newly elected Chairperson, Dr Krishnananda,  also shared his common views and promised that he and his team will do their best to uphold the traditional values of EMA and to protect and preserve the identity of Manipur.

A group photo with women members wearing traditional Manipuri dresses summed up the very existence of EMA upholding and preserving the varied tradition and culture of Manipur and providing its members a platform to give them a feeling of ‘HOME AWAY FROM HOME’.  Also a rare opportunity for children born and brought up here in Europe to remind them of their rich traditional and cultural roots.

13th EMA Annual Social Gathering and Convention 2014 has concluded at Kent, UK

The Annual Social Gathering and Convention for the year 2014 of the European Manipuri Association has been concluded on 15th June 2014 at Maidstone, Kent, United Kingdom.  The gathering started on the evening of 13th June by members arriving at Coldblow farm, situated on top of the Kent Downs in the South East of England. The farm is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty with stunning views of local footpaths and bridleways. A perfect venue for the gathering, serving a taste of natural heritage of English countryside.

 

The two days gathering and convention was attended by members of the Manipuri Diaspora community and expatriates residing in different parts of Europe. A once in a year major event which is also an opportunity for the widespread community to meet each other and welcome new members to the organisation.

 

Traditional delicacies prepared with ingredients brought from home, travelling thousands of miles, infused the spirit of Manipuriness. Besides the delicacies, it was a fun filled event with friendly yet organised competitive sports, showcasing of entertainment skills such as magic show by one of EMA’s senior members, rendering melodious Manipuri tunes making everyone nostalgic. A group photo with women members wearing traditional dresses summed up the very existence of EMA upholding and preserving the varied tradition and culture of Manipur and providing its members a platform to give them a feeling of ‘Home away from home’. Also a rare opportunity for the children born and brought up here in Europe, teaching as well as reminding them of their rich traditional and cultural roots.

 

The main highlights of the event were the first ever introduction of ‘EMA Cup’ football match organised between members residing in London versus ‘Rest of Europe’. The team comprising of ‘Rest of Europe’ won and lifted the cup .Man of the match was awarded to Franco Mayanglambam.  Apart from fun and cultural activities, an annual convention comprising of discussions on different topics related to socio-economic development of Manipur, promotion of Manipuri culture in Europe ,to  promote EMA through more  mini gatherings  and networking creating more awareness than before about its existence in Europe in general and London in particular are some to mention.

The Convention has resolved to organise EMA Football Cup as an annual event from this year onward to promote sports and unity among the Diasporas living in Europe. Furthermore, there was a brainstorming session on how to showcase the cultural heritage and artifacts of Manipur in particular and North East India in general at the international level whilst utilising the limited resources available.

The European Manipuri Association (EMA) would like to extend its heartfelt congratulations to all the Manipuri sportspersons at their outstanding success and performance in the recently concluded 34th National Games, 2011 in Jharkhand. The Association would also like to congratulate all the Manipuri players who have brought glory and success to many other states.

The success of Manipuri sportspersons has brought a sense of pride and motivation to Manipuris residing all over the world.
