Manipur Information Centre
New Delhi, August 14: In a befitting kick-start to a long series of recognitions and rewards awaiting India ’s boxing sensation Mary Kom back home, the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs was the first to felicitate the Olympic bronze medalist here this morning, immediately after she touched down the National Capital from London. Union Minister for Tribal Affairs and Panchayati Raj , V. Kishore Chandra Deo honoured the 29-year-old celebrity with a cheque of Rs 10 lakh at The Ashok hotel at Chanakyapuri here at 11 am. Sitting in the middle chair on the dais, Mary Kom who was flanked by Uinon Minister V. Kishore Chandra Deo on her right and Union Minister of State for Tribal affairs on her left received huge cheers from enthusiastic national media and the audience. Media swarmed on Mary Kom again at the venue after she met a large number of media at the airport this early morning.
In her maiden speech in the national capital after her arrival from London , Mary Kom expressed gratitude to all the people of India who extended constant support, prayed and wished for her to win the medal in London Olympics and I got a medal which was my long cherished dream on Olympics. She expected the gold medal but she couldn’t get it, she added.
She announced that she would try again for gold in Rio de Janeiro Olympics and sought the support from the public again. She said, “Support me and pray for me, I will go for the gold in Rio Olympics’. Born to a couple engaged in jhum (slash-and-burn) cultivation at Kangathei, Churachandpur District in Manipur, Mary Kom also had her share of hurdles like any tribal girl when she decided to enter the rings.
She burst into the national scene 12 years ago, became a mother of two (twin) sons, now aged five, midway her career, yet tenaciously sprang back to scene – and went on to win laurels. A bronze in the 51-kg flyweight category in London 2012 was the latest achievement in her progressively glorious career after achieving five world championship titles.
“This felicitation is special in many ways,” said Jiji Thomson, the Managing Director of Tribal Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited(TRIFED) that functioned under the Tribal Ministry. “Mary Kom epitomizes the grit and guts of Indian woman. She is going to be the flag-bearer and beacon for thousands of girls belonging to the tribal communities and aspiring to achieve greater heights”. In his opening felicitation speech, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs V. Kishore Chandra Deo said, “We are gathered here today to honor a lady, a tribal athlete, who has put India on the boxing map of the World (women boxing to be specific) by punching home an Olympic medal for India . She is the First woman athlete to bring home a boxing medal for the country in the first even Olympic featuring Women boxing as a field of competition. She is also the first Tribal Athlete to bring home an Olympic medal in the individual category. Please join me in congratulating the Tribal superwoman, M.C.Mary Kom”.
Addressing to M.C.Mary Kom, the Union Minister said, “We are proud of you. You have made Tribal India proud by bringing home an Olympic Medal for the country. It is belief and wish that your spectacular feats for the country will inspire endless generations of tribal communities and the rest of India in scaling newer and higher heights of Glory in future.”
He further lauded her, “M.C. Mary Kom created history by becoming India ’s first woman boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. Our very own talented and hard-working lady from the Northeast won a bronze in the 51-kg event at the just-concluded London Games’.
Kishore Chandra Deo described how Mary Kom was. He narrated, “Imagine a little girl being born to a jhum cultivation couple in a remote place in the hilly Northeastern state of Manipur almost three decades ago. In her toddler days and even later, Mary Kom saw her parents slashing and burning tracts of hilly land – and going ahead with their farming season one after the other.
Her interest, though, drifted onto athletics. She began participating with great flair and success in sporting events that were hosted by her schools in the city of Moirang initially and that in the state capital of Imphal subsequently. It was around that time that boxing started to appeal to her like never before. The dynamics of the combative sport and beauty of its movements as a martial art kept growing inside her as days passed by. They got a sudden boost in the year 2000, when inspiration came directly from none other than her state-mate Dingko Singh, a boxer who won a gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games at Bangkok’.
“So, what is special about the Olympic medal of Mary Kom”? The Union Minister asked himself and replied, “Well, let us no forget that India has a total of nearly 10 million tribal people. For that fraternity – underprivileged in general – Mary Kom’s latest achievement at London can be a matter of major inspiration. More so, considering that of the five titles India won at the 2012 Olympics, it is a tribal who has pocketed one”.
He further stated that the Government had to gain a clearer vision on how to brighten up the scheme of things in sports and games. “We should give a serious thought about building up a system that would ensure the strengthening of the skills of budding athletes at the grassroots level. Mary Kom’s story tells us the amazing results one can achieve largely through individual efforts rather than through a sound institutional setup. We have to alter this equation”, the Union Minister added.
Mary Kom’s mother Mangte Akham Kom, husband K.Onler Kom and his twin sons Rechungvar and Khupneivar were present in the felicitation function. The function was concluded with a colourful Komrem dance organised by the Komrem communities of Delhi . Mary Kom also joined the dance for a few minutes.

Each stamp champions an Olympic or Paralympics Sport and they are issued in three sets of ten stamps each. Merging stunning photography of Olympic disciplines and London landmarks, the Miniature Sheet of stamps is unique and dramatic in equal measure. It also features the London 2012 Emblem in its border. On the inaugural day of the event, Royal Mail unveiled a set of four Olympic stamps featuring athletes from four of the most popular events alongside London landmarks. They show a cyclist, a fencer, a diver and runners beside Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, the Olympic Stadium and the London Eye. These attractive stamps combining the sports events along with the London landmarks have become a great hit across the world and orders for these stamps have been pouring.
In unprecedented move for Great Britain, Royal Mail has announced that it will issue a new stamp to celebrate each and every British Gold Medal. It is a great tribute to Britain’s Olympians that really sticks. No doubt, it’s a great way to acknowledge and honour the Gold medal winners of Olympics 2012. Winning an Olympic gold medal is the pinnacle of any athlete’s career and the Gold medal stamps capture these moments in the sporting history of the country. Definitely, for the athletes, it’s a special honour to be acknowledged in such an iconic way. The plan is to make as many of the stamps as possible featuring photographs of the athlete or team during competition. It sounds quite interesting and innovative. This is how it will work. As soon as one of the British athletes wins a Gold Medal, the Royal Mail design team will start work on the winner’s design. Within an hour or so of victory, digital artwork will be sent to six security printers around the country who will work over-night to ensure delivery of the new stamps in time for ‘the next day’ issue of the stamps. What an innovative and interesting concept to promote stamps and at the same time to promote sports!
The Olympic Games are considered to be the world’s foremost sports competition in which thousands of athletes from different nations participate in a variety of competitions. The sports persons from different nations, culture and background come together and compete fairly and honestly to promote peace and harmony. India Post has been commemorating national and international sports events by releasing special postage stamps. For the London 2012 Olympic Games, India Post released a set of four commemorative postage stamps and a souvenir sheet on the theme ‘Inspire a Generation’. The stamps are a stylized portrayal of sportsmen engaged in Volleyball, Rowing, Sailing and Badminton.
Australia Post has a long tradition of supporting Olympics through series of stamps. During London 2012, Australia Post is celebrating Australia’s success at past Olympic Games with three stamps representing discipline of Swimming, sport of Rowing and the event of Pole Vault. This stamp issue, designed by Melbourne-based designer Jonathan Chong, comprises one domestic base-rate stamp (Swimming), one international postcard-rate stamp (Pole Vault) and one international letter-rate stamp (Rowing). Each stamp features a colourful image of an athlete in action against a stark white background. This stamp issue is part of Australia Post’s continuing support of the 2012 Australian Olympic Team. Australia Post has already released The Road to London stamp on 5 June to commemorate the London Olympic Games. It features several iconic London landmarks and pays tribute to the hard work and dedication of Australian athletes by featuring the official logo of the Australian Olympic Team. Stamp designer Jonathon Chong has made the red double-decker bus the focal point of the stamp, which first appeared in London after World War II and has since become synonymous with England’s capital. The distinctive dome of St Paul’s Cathedral can be seen on the left of the stamp; a cathedral which is said to embody the spiritual life and heritage of the British. In the centre sits the iconic London Eye, a Ferris wheel of enormous proportions. The London Eye is one of the world’s largest structures of its kind and is visited by over 3.5 million people each year. Also pictured on the right of the stamp is perhaps London’s most identifiable symbol of all, the Clock Tower colloquially referred to as Big Ben.
Australia Post is also bringing out the enormously popular Gold Medal instant stamps during the Olympic Games 2012. Every Australian athlete and team that wins gold in London will have their photograph printed on stamps.
After their gold medal-winning performance in the Women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay on Saturday 28 July, Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger are the first Australian athletes to feature on the Australian Gold Medallist Stamps for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Singapore Post, known for its professionalism in managing the postal services in the city state of Singapore, has brought out four stamps, showcasing the official London 2012 Olympic mascot Winlock in the sports poses. This set of four stamps highlights some of the popular sports that Singapore athletes will be aiming for success -Table Tennis, Swimming, Sailing and Badminton.

London, Aug 6 : Magnificent Mary defeated her Tunisian foe outscoring her in all the four rounds. She now enters the semi final of the London Olympics and confirmed a medal. Mary Kom fought with a strong defensive strategy against Maroua Rahali of Tunisia to win her 51 kg quarterfinal bout on Monday and assure India of its fourth medal in the London Olympics.
Though the opening two rounds were close, Mary took a sudden lead with a flurry of right punches in the third. It was enough to have her return to her guard in the fourth and final round to seal the match 15-6, a scoreline which showed the dominance of the 29-year-old.
She began with some good defence as her opponent Rahali had better height and reach advantage. Mary continued to maintain a safe distance while figuring out what Rahali could offer.
Taking her chances, she became aggressive. Rahali used more of her left punch. Height was a crucial factor in this match and Mary solved the puzzled by closing in and scoring valuable points.
The 29-year-old five-time world champion won her bout 15-6, having dominated from the start. She exhibited a great show in the ring, winning each four rounds to claim an unbeatable nine-point advantage. She has assured herself of a historic Olympic medal with this win.
Mary was on the defensive side in the first two rounds which she won 2-1, 3-2 respectively. In the third round, the crowd got to see the better of Mary Kom as she thumped back-to-back punches at her opponent who was taken by surprise.
The 11-4 scoreline in the third round was the decisive lead that Mary needed as it is never easy to erase a 7-point deficit without a knock-out.
The last round was all about keeping her cool although Mary at times got tempted to punch her opponent at the back of her head inviting caution from the referee. Still she managed to clinch the round with a 4-2 score and the final margin of 15-6 was certainly a convincing way to get into the semi-final.
Earlier Mary Kom defeated Karolina Michalczuk of Poland 19-14 cruising into the quarterfinal of the 51kg category with ease. The victory was celebrated throughout the country and crackers were blasted at her home state.
