Imphal, Jan 7: Gaan Ngai festival began today at BOAT inaugurated by Governor, Gurbhachan Jagat.
The opening event, which was organized by the State Level Gaan-Ngai 2012 Celebration Committee, was graced by Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat Singh, Principal Secretary, Government of Manipur and Chairman, SLGCC,2012, L.P. Gonmei, and Secretary State Level Gaan-Ngai 2012 celebration Committee, Norbert Disinang, IAS as chief guest, president and guest of honour.
Governor addressing the function said “Gaan-Ngai, as we all are aware, marks the end of a year and heralds a new year. It is the biggest annual festival of the Zeliangrong community lasting for five days or so. The festival, which literally means “Festival of Winter Season” is a festival paying homage to those souls who departed the year before and is also an occasion of worship, joy and merriment providing an opportunity not only to the Zeliangrong people but also to others to come together and work for our shared goal of ensuring peace and harmony in the society, setting aside all differences. While celebrating Gaan-Ngai, we should resolve to follow the spiritual and moral values that it conveys to make the festival significant.
Every festival of a community or a group of people, has its own and distinct character and message. The spirit of Gaan-Ngai festival is to disseminate the message of peace, friendship, brotherhood, compassion and forgiveness among the people not only of Manipur, but also to the mankind. In the celebration of a festival, the edifice of oneness gets strengthened. Ensuring sense of oneness and friendly feelings is the prerequisite to peaceful co-existence which is the need of the hour in today’s trouble-torn society.”
He hoped that the Gaan-Ngai festival will be celebrated in its true spirit and it will help in further strengthening the social fabric that binds the different groups of people together. In fact, peaceful co-existence is an age-old and glorious tradition of the people of Manipur. We are proud of this tradition. Hence, all communities of Manipur should contribute their best to sustain this glorious tradition.

Imphal, Jan 7: A bomb was planted at the office of Congress (I) Candidate Dr. Kh. Loken at Mabudhou Mantri Lampak yesterday.
An office of Congress (I) Candidate and sitting MLA Dr. Kh. Loken has been opened at the house of Kh. Bhubneswar, a congress worker.
A hand grenade was also planted at the office of Nambol Block Congress Office last night around eight p.m.
The bomb was later blasted at Nambol Leimaram Makha Leikai. In a similar incident, some persons hurled two bombs at the residence of W. Brajabidhu, sitting MLA, Lamshang last night around 11 p.m.
One bomb was exploded however the other did not explode.
The Coordination Committee (CorCom), a common forum of seven militant organizations, has intensified its attacks on the Congress party with bombings and planting of bombs at various Congress offices in different parts of the State to bar the national political party from contesting in the ensuing January 28 scheduled polls, and at same time the State Government, taking up preemptive measures in the wake of the ban imposed against Indian National Congress (INC), has also apprehended 10 militants belonging to the militant organization, including an intending candidate in polls to the 10th Manipur Assembly.
A Chinese handgrenade was found left at the residence of a Congress worker Kshetrimayum Bhumeshwor, 38 at Sagolband Mantri Leikai under Lamphel police station in the wee hours of Friday.
The bomb, which was wrapped with some ten-rupee notes, which police said could go off if handled or touched it unknowingly, was found at a makeshift Congress office set up for the coming general elections.
However, police rushed to the site and later defused the handgrenade in the late morning somewhere in the area after evacuating residents.
Meanwhile, a combined team of Imphal West and Imphal East police commandos arrested 10 CorCom militants, including its overground workers and supporters along with a huge cache of arms and ammunition including incriminating items during a search operation at Keirao Langdum in Imphal East.
The combined team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Imphal West, Dr. Ibomcha under the supervision of Imphal East Additional SP launched a massive search operation, which began from 11 pm on January 5 to early morning on January 6, in the area after receiving intelligence reports about the presence of some militants and subsequently arrested 10 members of CorCom, police said Friday.
The police said all the arrested were involved in the string of bomb attacks targeted at various locations where Congress offices situated, particularly in Imphal.
The arrested were identified as Ningthoujam Itomba, 44 s/o (L) N. Selung of Keirao Bitra Awang Leikai, Asem Momon Singh, 41 s/o A. The only fire brigade in the city is surrounded can only move out through a single way. The way is blocked most of the time. The road just adjacent to the brigade complex is always blocked by four wheelers parked throughout the day. Those who come to Pologround and the market areas park their four wheelers on this road. This is not advisable. Gullies and by lanes having been blocked totally. Parking in Thangal and Paona markets are now allowed and movement of even a two wheeler is difficult. One thing that is to be noted is that the traffic violators are mostly government vehicles which park randomly. The busy Allu gali area always faces traffic jam. We wonder how heavy trucks come inside the busy street during day time when even smaller vehicles are not allowed to enter the area. Heavy truck should not be allowed during day time. Vacant lands having been fallen in the hands of greedy yet powerful men there were not any space where the fleeing men and women could cloister. This is how disaster management is carried out in Manipur. The Government cannot plead inability to fight against the incident of this nature. It has to work out modalities for saving this twin sinking market place. Nullahs are becoming narrower which is filled by filthy materials. It is time the Government begin by thinking of following and implementing the guidelines of the Union Urban Development Ministry in the construction of houses in urban areas. Above two lakh people pour in Imphal everyday from different areas of the state mostly for shopping. Their destination is Paona and Thangal Bazaars. But the narrow roads cannot accommodate the ever increasing number of buyers thronging around the twin market places. Either the road expands or a system be taken up to see to it that the shoppers do not reach the twin market areas. Confusing scenes prevail everywhere. The parking for buses could be shifted. Theses buses should not be based in the areas where they are parking. It is amazing the Government allows these buses and trucks to drive up to the hearts of the town. These buses could be parked at the outskirts of the town. If that is done congestion in Imphal town too can be minimized. Town planners and experts could be summoned to share their views on road managements. The delay in the completion of flyover construction is an added problem.
