NNN: The Sharmila Kanba Lup (SAKAL) or “Save Sharmila Movement ” today observed the “AFSPA-58 Pu Ain Oinhankhiba Numit September 11″ at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound here.
Taking part at the observance as chief guest, noted scholar Dr Arambam Lokendro made a speech when he lashed out at all the leaders of Manipur dubbing them ‘speechless leaders’ against Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 which has long become an obnoxious military law.
He conceded although both the valley and the hill are said to be bound together, this can never be showned in practice till date and such dubious chain has hampered everything.
Lokendro brought back to memory the event when the British unfurled its Union Jack at Kangla Fort akin to the heart of the people of Manipur after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
All Manipur Working Journalists, Union (AMWJU) president A Mobi, who was also speaking at the function, was of the opinion that the Government at the Centre will be upset and trembled if another 10 persons having the same spirit of Irom Chanu Sharmila is sprung up against AFSPA. Sharmila has been on fast for the last 11 years demanding removal of AFSPA from the state of Manipur.
A section of the society has been strongly protesting the AFSPA in Manipur, while another section of people are taking things from Assam Rifles, Mobi accused.
He said, “It is too late to deliberate on AFSPA and that we should rather take up movement to remove the act.”
The AMWJU leader, who took part at the function marking the day when AFSPA was promulgated in the Parliament, insisted the movement against the military law has failed to bear any fruit over the last three decades as the people of Manipur did not protest it with sincerity and urged the people to be aware that now is the right time to understand the laxity.
Several critics who were attending at the occasion also spoke about AFSPA.
Besides Arambam Lokendro and A Mobi, among others the function was also attended by Soibam Momon Leima, co-convenor, SAKAL.
