Imphal, Dec 10: Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary of the AICC today called upon all the politicians to work honestly with a principle . Addressing a public meeting at Hapta Kangjeibung here today the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family said political leaders should try to “hear the voice of as many people as possible”. He said he dreams of India with every voice being heard.
When Mary Kom of Manipur won the bronze medal in London Olympics it became a voice of the country he said. Each and every state should be treated as the centre of the country and all should be equally treated he added. Voice of the people will come through education, proper roads, job and a villager getting benefit of PMGSY road means his voice was heard he added.
Millions are getting benefit of job security under MGNREGS and RTI, Food Security have benefitted all he further said. The mission of the government is to ensure that the local bodies are given full power he further assured. In states like JK, UP, Jharkhand powers are not properly devolved to local bodies. What is the point of holding local body elections if power are not given to them he asked.
Representatives of local bodies are in touch with people at local levels than MP, MLAs and they should be given powers he said. After RTI, food security , MGREGS the new tool given for the people is, “direct cash transfer” he added. He said Rs 2 lakh crore would now be directly transferred to the people. He reminded that his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi said only 15 paise out of Re 1 meant for the people reaches the people.
As India moves forward we have to understand that India is strong of its different languages, cultures. After addressing the public meeting he addressed Congress youths and discussed various issues. He said there is a tendency for leaders to distance themselves from the people as they go higher. They should try to reach out to people more after they move up he said.
Congress Gen Secy, Faliero said 60 percent of India’s population are youths and people of the country are looking on Rahul Gandhi to lead them. Chief Minister, O Ibobi singh said the region has fond memories of the Gandhi, Nehru family however the problems the region is facing has to be dealt with properly he said.
He said Manipur has a unique history of over 2000 years and it became part of India in 1949 . He further said there are serious efforts to solve the problems of the region but we should be cautious that we do not create another problem while solving a problem he added.
Hundreds of people had started trickling in to attend the meeting though the meeting was slated to begin at 11 am. Due to inclement weather the plane carrying Rahul Gandhi arrived late and the meeting started about one and half hour late. The 20,000 chairs were all filled up with large numbers of people standing near the barricades. Security was tightened around the premises and new traffic regulations were made for the day in and around the city. Rahul Gandhi left Imphal after attending the function.
“The local bodies (Panchayati Raj institutions and other local bodies) are closer to the common man. They know better about the problems at the grass root level than those of MLAs and the MPs and so devolving powers is important because you are the one who can deliver goods better.” Rahul Gandhi pointed out that in many states of India including Jammu and Kashmir and Jarkhand powers have not been given to the local bodies. “Devolving of power to these local bodies is very important,” the AICC leader re-iterated.
Rahul Gandhi expressed his regret that majority of the politicians often fail to apply ethics and principles in their work.
He then stressed for the building of a strong future of India. “We need to build the country’s future with the participation of every citizen of India—the strong, the weak, the small and the big—all are equally important in building a very strong future of India,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Harping on the unity front Rahul Gandhi said, “I love coming to the North East region. You are here today and for many it is the north eastern part of India, certainly. But for me, this part of India is the centre of our crountry. When I visit Tamil Nadu, it is the central part of India for me. I may be in Mumbai or in Rajasthan, they are the central parts of India for me. This is my politics.” The AICC leader said that every citizen of India should feel at home in every part of India. “We are proud that large number of young boys and girls are working in Delhi,” Rahul added. He also expressed that he feels proud for boxer MC Mary Kom.
He then said Congress party stands for India but other political parties work for one community or for one religion. “But the Congress party stands for India, the united India,” Rahul Gandh exhorted.

IMPHAL, Dec 10 MNS/NNN: The relay hunger strike by Sharmila Kanba Lup (SAKAL) in support of the hunger striker Irom Chanu Sharmila demanding repeal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 from Manipur, has completed four years on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion marking completion of four years of relay hunger strike by SAKAL which was coincides with the observance of International Human Rights Day at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound in Imphal, Babloo Loitongbam, executive director, Human Rights Alert (HRA) accused the Central Government of not taking into account of the Jeevan Reddy Commission report.
The human rights activist further accused the Prime Minister, who had admitted that AFSPA was an inhuman Act and that it was better to replace it by a more humane Act, of keeping mum on the issue till date.
Babloo, who was speaking at the function as a resource person, observed that because of AFSPA rampant Human Rights contravention and atrocities are being committed by security forces in Manipur and the root cause of militancy in the state was this Act.
He recounted the remarks made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Imphal in 2004 when he stated that ‘AFSPA had become an inhuman Act and that it was better to replace it by a more humane Act.’
Soon after that, a four-member committee, which was later entitled as “Jeevan Reddy Commission” headed by retired Supreme Court Justice, Jeevan Reddy, was constituted to review AFSPA, he said and he added that the commission after completing the revision work had submitted the report to the Central Government but it has maintained silence over the report setting aside it till now.
“Such act of the Government is unfortunate and clearly indicates that it has underestimated the people of Manipur,” he alleged.
Imposition of this Draconian law enacted by Indian Parliament in the states like Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir allegedly in an inequitable manner is a sinister design of the Central Government to wipe out smaller communities, Babaloo said.
H Sanahanbi, member, SAKAL, who was giving the key note address of the function, asked why AFSPA has not yet been enforced in the Naxal-hit states of the country even though the volatile situations in such states have demanded such Act.
Supporting the cause of Irom Chanu Sharmila, SAKAL launched the rally hunger strike on December 10, 2008. The event was also attended by Y Nabachandra, president, United Committee Manipur (UCM), S Momon, convenor, SAKAL, Sinam Prakash, secretary general, North East Students’ Organisation and several leaders of various NGOs.
In a shocking revelation, 1528 people been killed in Manipur from the year 1979 to May, 2012 in encounters. Of these, 1399 were males, 31 females and 98 were children.
Observing the International Human Rights Day today at Manipur Press Club in Imphal, organised by Life Watch, Advocate Indra Kumar who is a human rights activist revealed this information.
Also speaking on the occasion, advocate Thoudam Manihar of the Gauhati High Court said many crimes occur due to the bad governance. He said that the government should maintain law and order so as to reduce the crime rate.
Thoudam Manihar then stated that the International Human Rights Day came into being after the United Nations’ meeting held at Paris on December 10, 1948.
Harping on Manipur situation, Thoudam Manihar alleged that human rights violation are committed by both the state and the central security forces. He also mentioned the case of hunger striker Irom Sharmila saying because of all these rights violations, she has been on hunger strike to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
The Gauhati High Court advocate then said the government being the guardian of the people, should understand the wishes of the public.
Noted rights activist Khaidem Mani talked about the need to raise public voice everytime the human rights violation is committed. He said media can be an important platform where the cases of human rights violation can be put up.

Speaking to media persons in a press meet held at Manipur Press Club today, Ganga, mother of Thoithoi said they were informed of the news of her daughter’s death by the locals and not by her husband’s family at around 11:30am of December 8, 2012.

After receiving the sad news she along with her son Y Athouba (22) went to her daughter’s house and found no one in the house.

The dead body of her daughter was hanging just 2/3 inches above the ground from her feet, she said.

Moreover, two loin clothes were tied together to form a rope which was found tied loosely around her neck, she complained.

Police was reported by the woman’s family, she added.

Meanwhile Athouba, said another hanging rope made of khudei, her sister’s earing, bicycle chain and a fanek (local wraparound) with stools and urine were also found lying inside her room the same day.

The death body was wrapped in an unusual manner by a fanek which was tied on her back, he continued.

He further said all these evidences clearly indicate that his sister was murdered.

After the post mortem it was found out that there were two swellings on her head, one at the back side and another near the ear. Blood too flowed out from her eyes and mouth, he continued.

Ganga appealed the concerned authority to punish the culprits who are responsible for her daughter’s alleged murder immediately.

There was a time when cricket in India, not only did not have money in it, but ex cricketers, including Test cricketers led penurious lives. This was, to the extent that the Cricket Control Board Of India, had to organize chaity matches after a cricketer`s retirement. This was one humane act of considertion by the Board. These were termed unambiguously as benefit matches, and the likes of Vinoo Mankad, and Lala Amarnath did get financial assistance from these matches, something which they not only deserved, but something which must have helped them a bit, to counter life`s more material struggles. Likewise many Ranji Trophy players also got some dividends. But there was tragedy, a senior cricket commentator Berry Sarbadhakari committed suiced because of financial want. Soon the Cricket Booard started increaing the allowances to players. Today cricket commentators, most of them ex international players are globe totters, and cricket aficionados in action! Not only do they not need to commit suicide, but they can wallow in opulence during commentary stints. Umpires are also more fortunate, than the time S. Venkataraghavan, or Sambhu Pan were international umpires.

We must owe it to Kerry Packer`s behest and wisom for bring in the evasive lucxre to cricket, like tennis, and inevitably many cricketers forgot loyalties to the country, swayed by the immense benefit to their coffers this would entail. The Cricket Boards of these countries peremptorily banned these players from Test duty.

In the meantime BCCI was stealthily raising funds from test matches (much of it came from raving fans at the Eden Gardens Calcutta). Having done this, the BCCI started making hefty payments to Indian cricketers based on categories, and soon the pecuniary powers of the BCCI began to tell in cricketing dominions, after Dalmiya became the President of the ICCI!

Now our cricketers, thanks again to IPL are not only well paid, they lead enviable personal lives, their houses are well guarded (like Dhoni`s), they run restaurants, they are ad men (and also god men), they figure promptly in reality shows, looking coquettishly at film heriones, models etc.

In the 1970s Bishan Singh Bedi led his team out of a hotel during an unofficial test series against Sri Lanka, complaining about inadquate facilities including I suppose food.

But I was surprised when reading in the papers the other day that in a book launch in Kolkata organized by the Cricket Association of Bengal that Virendra Sehwag stomped out angrily and grumpily of the gathering complaining of bad food. Last time he said in an event organized by the CAB, it was the same thing; the guests were given sandwiches. And, can you believe it the CAB literarily ran after him to propatiate our little god?

Come on Sehwag, have a heart – there are millions in our country who led alone not getting sandwiches do not even get a square meal a day. You sound more like the Queen during the French Revolution, who said that if the people were not getting bread to eat they should try cakes!
