CM requests inclusion of age appropriate text on freedom fighter`™s life in NCERT text-books

NEW DELHI, August 24 (MIC): The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi recalled Rani Gaidinliu`™s contribution to India`™s freedom struggle, while inaugurating the freedom fighter`™s Birth Centenary at a solemn function at Vigyan Bhavan here today.

Speaking on the occasion, he emphasised that India must remember the glorious heritage of the freedom struggle, and ensured that the legacy of the struggles and achievements of the freedom fighters was passed on to succeeding generations.

He also said, `It is our misfortune that people such as Rani Gaidinliu have either not been remembered adequately, or have been deliberately forgotten.`

The Prime Minister spoke of his government`™s initiatives for the development of the North-East. He reiterated that the progress of the north-east would provide a big boost to the development of the entire nation.

In his speech, Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh conveyed his sincere appreciation to the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Ministry of Culture for the grand function organised to pay their sincere gratitude to the leader from Manipur who had played an important role in the Freedom Movement of India.

The Chief Minister also drew the attention of the Prime Minister of India for recommendation to the Human Resource Development Ministry to include age appropriate texts on the life of Rani Gaidinilu in NCERT text books of classes I to X.

He said, `This will go a long way in promoting national integration, as well as women empowerment.`

He said Gaidinliu was a Naga leader who led a revolt against British rule in India.

In 1927, at the age of 13, she joined the Heraka religious movement of her cousin Haipou Jadonang. The movement later turned into a political movement to drive out the British. Within the Heraka cult, she came to be considered as an incarnation of the goddess Cherachamdinliu. With the arrival of guns from Cachar, it turned into an armed rebellion against the British policies of forced labour and ruthless oppression.

Persuaded by Jadongang`™s ideology and principles, Gaidinliu became his disciple and a part of his movement against the British. In three years, by the age of 16, she became a leader of guerrilla forces fighting against the British rulers. After Jadonang was arrested and hanged by the British in 1931, Gaidinliu emerged as his heir, he said.

The Manipur Chief Minister narrated that Gaidinliu openly rebelled against the British rule, exhorting the Zeliangrong people not to pay taxes.

She received donations from the locals, many of whom also joined her as volunteers. The British authorities launched a manhunt for her. She evaded arrest by the police, moving from village to village in what are now Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. The Governor of Assam, British India dispatched the 3rd and 4th battalions of the Assam Rifles against her, under the supervision of the Naga Hills Deputy Commissioner JP Mills. Monetary rewards were declared for information leading to her arrest: this included a declaration that any village providing information on her whereabouts will get a 10-year tax break. Her forces engaged the Assam Rifles in armed conflicts in the North Cachar Hill (16 February 1932) and the Hangrum village (18 March 1932).

In October 1932, Gaidinliu moved to the Pulomi village, where her followers started building a wooden fortress.

While the fortress was under construction, an Assam Rifles contingent headed by Captain MacDonald launched a surprise attack on the village on 17 October 1932. Gaidinliu, along with her followers, was arrested near the Kenoma village. She was taken to Imphal, where she was convicted on the charges of murder and abetment of murder after a 10-month trial. She was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Political Agent`™s Court for abetment of murder. From 1933 to 1947 she served jail terms at Gauhati, Shillong, Aizawl and Tura jails, he added.

The Chief Minister said that the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru met her at the Shillong Jail in 1937 and described Gaidinliu as a daughter of the hills and he gave her the title `Rani`™ or Queen of her people. Nehru wrote to the British MP Lady Astor to do the needful for the release of Rani Gaidinliu but the Secretary of State for India rejected the request stating that trouble may rise again if Rani was released.

She was released in 1947 after India`™s independence, and continued to work for the upliftment of her people.

She was honoured as a freedom fighter and was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1982. In 1991, Gaidinliu returned to her birthplace Langkao, where she spent her last days, he added.

Okram Ibobi said, `The life history of Rani Gaidinliu is an inspiration to all young Indians. This is, in particular, an embodiment of women power of India which all of us must respect.`

He further stated, `Observing the Birth Centenary Celebrations of Rani Gaidinliu will make her contributions in the Freedom Movement of India known to all the people of our great country India.`

During the function, Prime Minister of India released the denomination of coins of Rs 100 and Rs 5 to commemorate the birth centenary of Rani Gaidinliu.

The Governor of Nagaland Shri P.B. Acharya, the Chief Minister of Nagaland T.R. Zeliang, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Culture Minister Dr.Mahesh Sharma, and Union DoNER Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh were also present.

The entangle over the demand for the introduction of the Inner Line Permit System, ILPS, or an equivalent act in Manipur to control influx of migrants settlers hopefully will be resolved tomorrow when the JCILPS meets the government for a final time before the bill is tabled before the Manipur Assembly. As to whether the bill will have a smooth passage to become law is another matter, but the period of lull that will hopefully follow must be used to reflect on all that has happened. A lot has indeed happened in the two months that went by. Street protests in Imphal and other valley districts that often degenerated into chaos and mayhem; damages caused to public and private properties; the flash point of the clashes at Moreh and more. Besides all the action on the ground, the internet too had transformed into a virtual free for all battlefield, where abuses and counter abuses flew in all directions possible. Especially after the Moreh incident, this grew dangerously close to another form of ethnic feud, but the only saving grace of this battlefield is, though ugly and unseemly, nobody gets injured however intense the combats. Though the open declarations of hatreds and dislikes between communities would have shocked anybody, in a way it could prove to be a beneficial purge in the end. Sometimes, as psychologists tell us, it is therapeutic to even scream at the sky, or at each other, and vent all that was hidden within, instead of keeping the negative emotions closeted within while pretending bonhomie on the outside during social interactions. Quite by coincidence, these face-offs had another component too. The declaration of a `Framework Agreement` between the NSCN(IM) and the Government of India on August 3, brought in a third dimension to the cold war.

All the fang-baring and venom spitting then, we hope will result in new and more realistic intercommunity relationships in Manipur. What has become clear is (and this is not a new thing though) that the interests and aspirations of the different ethnic groups in Manipur are not at all homogenous. As we have reminded on several occasions, even during these last two months, it is the valley community, the Meiteis to be precise, who must leave its nostalgia about their past and come to terms with the fact of these divergence of interests in the modern times. They must not presume foreknowledge of what other communities want, or claim proprietorship of the state`™s interest. There is, and there will have to be, something as Manipur`™s interest (geography above all determines this) common to all who have made the state their home, but this common interest would have to be a result of periodic ratification. There are plenty of forums on which this can happen, beginning with the State Assembly, to interactions between civil bodies. As in any meaningful federation however, besides these common interests, there can be and should be individual interests of the different ethnic components too.

An illustration will help. Take the United Kingdom of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each of them once had their separate flags. The flag of St. George for England, the flag of St. Andrews for Scotland and the flag of St. Patrick for Northern Ireland. The Union Jack, which is the flag of the United Kingdom, is a combination of these three flags. Flag of St. George and of St. Andrew, both of which has a white banner with a red crucifix running all across its length and breath, are nearly identical so have been conjoined. The flag of St. Patrick is also a white banner with a red cross that runs diagonally across the rectangle of the banner. After changing the background to deep blue lined with thick white borders, these emblems from the three components of the nation are combined to form the now a familiar sight `“ the Union Jack. This is the flag of the UK and it is used in all its official functions. However, in sporting tournaments, such as the Football World Cup, they compete separately, which is why many of us would have noticed with surprise the flag that come out during England`™s World Cup matches, is the flag of St. George, the white banner with a red crucifix spanning across it, strongly reminiscent of the images we are familiar with of the Crusade of medieval Europe, and interestingly of the annals of the legendary archer, Robinhood who fought for justice of the Saxon peasants against the Norman rulers of England of the time. Lest we are confused by these accounts of flags, the Republic of Ireland (which is different from Northern Ireland), and not a part of the UK, we know has its own separate flag, and a very secular choice of three colours identical to the Indian flag, but running in vertical rows and obviously without the Ashok Chakra. The point we are making is, it is time for Manipur to delineate between the larger interests of the state from those of the individual communities. Beyond the common interest then, if the interests of the hill communities are protected, it entails that the valley`™s interest too must receive protection to give parity. The inability to strike the right equation so far, in which the valley is increasingly beginning to see itself as the one at the receiving end, is another big reason for the kind of trouble we are witnessing today. The pursuit of these separate interests must however not be at the cost of each other.

Ngari

A Bit of Verity & Falsity by Vox Populi

Will the Manipuri people survive without Morok? Can we live without Ngari? It is hard to imagine life without Morok & Ngari. If Nagaland or the government of India wishes to wipe off Manipur, they must attack Morok & Ngari first so that Manipur meets a natural end.

Even with a steaming fish curry doled out in front of our eyes, it is difficult to swallow a mouthful of rice without the Morokmetpa gracefully seated in a corner of our plate. We can survive without a leader who would lead, but our lives would be horrible without Morok & Ngari.

There is a leadership vacuum. This we all agree. We are badly in need of a worthwhile leader to repair the damage that has been done to our polity, economy and our outlook. A single leader for Manipur as a whole is also an uneasy proposition. Everybody in Manipur wants to become a leader, and every Manipuri, more or less has attributes of a leader. This is why we are seeing so many leaders, sprouting up almost everywhere in Leirak-Khulak and Urak-Warak. One can eulogise Manipur as a land littered with leaders across its length and breadth. It pains the head to decide which leader is to be respected, or which one is to be hailed with deference. Many are in the dark, failing to come out of the alley of powerlessness, to decide.

If fear is all that matters, then someone who can make the young and old, women and children, the wise and fool tremble with fear by threat or intimidation must be the leader of the highest order. There have been rulers of vast empires, at the slightest mention of whose names people acquire cold sweat. Are they today remembered with love and respect? If leader is someone who can kill millions of people, who in turn is feared by millions, then atom bomb is a big leader. Pistols and revolvers are small leaders. A kitchen knife must also be respected for it can be a tiny leader as well.

Leader is someone, just at the slightest mention of his/her name, without his/her presence; evokes reverence deep in our hearts, cast a golden ray of hope in front of our eyes, showers joy and happiness for the welfare of people in abundance like an infinite spring. Leader is someone who detests any kind of personal benefits. Manipur and its people are eagerly looking for this kind of a leader. Not someone who dredges a few meters of leikai drainage and seeks our electoral mandates. Not someone who dumps a truckload of soil over the sunken area of our courtyards and sweet-talk about elections. Not someone who sprinkles a few truckloads of gravel and shouts on the rooftops: `It`™s me who did it `“ it`™s me who did it`! Also, not that man who came guarded with bodyguards and showered money on the pallas at mother`™s shradh. Not someone who offers concealed paraphernalia in the name of the land. Not someone who went begging to Delhi and comes back saying `this time they have put more` with full of pride. Indeed it`™s dicey to be our leader. For sure one is desperately needed. But wherefrom will he/she come? From the south or north, or from the east or west, or from the middle of the Loktak; if one springs up from the middle of that water `¦ Or should we mould a leader made with Morok & Ngari if at all any leader fails to show up? Whatever it may be, leader of Manipur must be men of Ngari & Morok. We are a people who savour the fragrance of Ngari.

By Momon Thoudam

I wonder if Manipuris are harassing Non-Manipuris OR Non-Manipuris are harassing/murdering the National character of Manipuri people. A non-manipuri blog on facebook by name “Helpless non meiteis(in manipur) previously “Helpless Non-Manipuris” have been circulating various communal, anti Manipuri/Anti Meitei propagandas day and night. The facebook pages generate hatred and suspicion among Manipuris and Non-Manipuris and Meitei-tribals. It’s one of the most violent form of communal propaganda against Manipur at large. Jcilps on another hand normally appealed people of Manipur to stage democratic form of agitation for implementation of ILPS in Manipur. Public curfew/public emergency was also declared as per the inactivity and insensitivity shown by the Govt towards the issue of demographic imbalance in the state. The people of state witnessed as how some misled Kukis along with Non-manipuris targeted and looted pro ILPS Meitei groups in Moreh recently. By indulging into economic blockade against Manipur, Non-manipuris have yet again proved beyond any reasonable doubt that they are anti-Manipur and anti-Manipuris. Serious consequences are inevitable due to non- Manipuris communal politics in Manipur and NE at large. Non Manipuris would be solely responsible for any untoward communal clashes in the region. People of Manipur specially Meiteis who are spearheading ILP movement have shown maximum level of self restraint till date. NEPO..the name itself is great insult to the indigenous people of NE??!!! It’s high time NE should unite against immigrants which are becoming rowdy in NE itself, abusing Northeasterners in NE. People of NE should teach these lecherous criminal Non- Manipuris a big lesson, need to remind that its NE and no Delhi where in they would rape, molest kill our people at will…and now Blockade in NE!!!Pro NRC groups of Assam and pro ILPS groups of Manipur should join hand in hand and liberate NE from Non Northeasterners in the greater interests of regional peace and tranquility…Long live Manipur! Long live NE! Down with Mayang hegemony! Save NE from Mayangs!!No to greater Bangladesh! Save indigenous peoples of NE!!
