The recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games once again established beyond doubt the sporting prowess of Manipur. Athletes from the State won one gold and four silvers, doing the State and the country proud. All the medals were from mainstream Olympic sports disciplines, namely weightlifting, boxing, judo and hockey. Our congratulations go out to all of the winners, as well as to the other members of the 14 strong contingent of sportspersons from the State who participated although did not manage to come home with a medal. The very fact that they were selected as the cream in their different disciplines to represent a country of a billion and more people is in itself a big achievement. Moreover, if there is anything of the traditional and beautiful description of the Olympics spirit left in sportsmanship, the glory of sports is in the participation not in the winning. A lot has quite unfortunately changed in the competitive scenario of the modern times, increasingly determined by the new culture of consumerist commerce and advertisement, and like in all other fields, in sports too nothing else is beginning to matter except winning. This, we suppose is the brave new world of sports (or “grave new world” if you like, to borrow Aldus Huxley’s rather cynical twist of the phrase), that the new generation of sportspersons have no choice but to imbibe. The Asian Games are round the corner, all of them, and probably some more as there would be more sporting disciplines in these games, will have the opportunity to prove themselves again. The competition this time would be much stiffer in many, indeed most of the disciplines, judo and weightlifting in particular, with the entry of some sports powerhouses of East Asia and many Central Asian splinter countries of the former USSR. Our best wishes nonetheless go out to all of our sportspersons.

In boxing, where pugilists from Manipur put up a sterling performance at Glasgow, bringing back two silvers, the standard of competition would be more or less at the same level, therefore the prospects of a repeat of the feats at the CWG are bright. Even if the Cubans, Americans and Asian boxers were around, CWG boxing would still be considered world class. This is so especially in the extremely competitive men’s boxing. Unlike women’s boxing, men’s boxing has been around much longer and had reached its saturation point for long ago, with the implication that those who come out on top, can consider themselves standing on a plateau from where not many more can go higher. But the plateau is crowded with talents, and probably in each weight class, there are 100 other boxer who on his day can beat any reigning champion. This being the case, Laishram Debendro and others, though very good, would still have to be always on the alert and fiddle fit. In women boxing which is relatively very new, the saturation point is still not reached. This is why the standard keeps improving substantially each year. It is also apparent, after some weight classes were included in the Olympics for the first time in London two years ago, the lure of the Olympics is inducing more and more talented women boxers to take to the sports. This is a caution for Manipur’s shining stars, Mary Kom and Laishram Sarita. Both are punching above their weights because there are only a relatively few weight classes in women’s boxing admitted as Olympic discipline as yet, and age is not on their side either. The upcoming Asian Games and the next Olympics two years hence probably would be their only realistic chances for a prestigious international gold. But the way to this glory is going to be far from easy. Even within the country, the competition is stiffening, as we all are witness to.

These words of caution notwithstanding, our congratulations and gratitude to all our sports stars for putting our State on the national consciousness for a positive reason for once. They are truly our goodwill ambassadors, and it is they who made the new government at the Centre take notice and award the State handsomely with the promise of a Sports University. With this prospect in mind, sports authorities in the State ought to take note of the pattern of sporting excellence the State throws up consistently. There is no point arguing that producing world class sportspersons in certain sports disciplines would be simply out of our reach. It should be equally clear that the opposite is equally true and that given our general physiognomy, environmental conditioning through the eons, cultural orientation, we can also produce world beaters in certain other sporting disciplines.

IMPHAL, August 13: Manipuris widely observed the Patriots’ Day today, commemorating the sacrifices made by the heroes of Manipur during the Anglo-Manipur war of 1891.

Several functions were held across the State at the district headquarters and outside the State to mark the day.

The State organised function was held at the Bir Tikendrajit Park.

State Governor VK Duggal and Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh led in offering floral tributes to the martyrs at the Heecham Yaichampat, Moirangkhom, at the Thangal General Temple, Palace Compound and at the Kangla Fort in the morning.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and other dignitaries also offered floral tributes to the martyrs.

A team of the Manipur Rifles gave a guard of honour and gun salute to the martyrs during the observation at BT Park.

Taking advantage of the disunity and discord amongst the various kings ruling in India, the British came and conquered India. The British were provided the same opportunity again in Manipur by the September 1890 Palace revolt, said Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh revisiting history during the observation at BT Park.

The Chief Minister further urged the people to discard the idea of disunity and separatism and live unitedly for the land.

Governor VK Duggal said, “Even though Manipur lost the war and came under British rule, the series of battles in 1891 showed the courage of the Manipuris who fought against the strongest power of the then world; showing that freedom is more important than their own lives.”

“Many perished during the battles. Twenty two of the leaders including Maharaja Kulachandra were exiled for life and five were hanged to death.”

While Yuvaraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General were hanged to death on this day in 1891, the other three Pukhrambam Kajao, Niranjan Subedar arid Chirai Naga were hanged to death in the Central Jail Complex in the same year on May 25, June 8 and October 13, respectively, he said.

“After all of India came under British Rule with the conquest of Manipur, it was the sacrifice of innumerable number of people of India, including from Manipur, who brought back independence on August 15, 1947,” he said and added Manipur was merged to the Union of India on October 15, 1949 and since then is an important part of the country.

“The 21st century is predicted as the century of the Asians, and we should strive to make this prediction come true,” he observed.

The Governor continued that Manipur has to come up with its own solutions to its problems and if we wait for others to intervene, then we may lose everything.

The ethnic and social tensions, which have been simmering for quite some time are likely to be the festering wound of Manipur and will continue to adversely impact the beautiful State, he said.

“We had seen communal violence in the nineties but now despite tension, people have become mature enough to ensure such violence does not recur.”

“The phenomenon of calling bandhs, economic blockades, etc at the drop of the hat, even for minor incidents has harmed the pace of development in the State and such acts need to be avoided,” the Governor asserted. The belief that the administration listens only when violence is resorted is misplaced and must be dispelled but at the same time the administration should not only be responsive but also seen to be responsive, he said.

The Governor also said that the administration and the population must go hand in hand to ensure that divisive forces do not have an upper hand and that peace is the hallmark of this State.

“We should also resolve to safeguard our age old values of love, peace, tolerance and mutual understanding.”

The function was attended by the council of ministers, MLAs, parliamentary secretaries, chairmen of Hill Area Committee, chief secretary, DGP, other high ranking Civil & Police officers and the general public.

The day was also observed by several social organisations, local clubs, educational institutions and others including Huyen lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, Manipur People’s Party, Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol, etc

IMPHAL, August 13: The State government cannot take any hasty decision, but there is no doubt that it is seriously considering implementation of the Inner Line Permit System in Manipur, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh told the media today.

The Chief Minister interacted briefly with the media persons after paying floral tribute at Heecham Yaichampat.

He said the State government is not the competent authority to authorise implementation of the ILPS in the State, nevertheless, it is the main agenda of the government at the moment.

The State needs to consult the Centre on the pros and cons of implementing the ILPS, he said before adding that the government is at the same time pressuring the Centre for its implementation.

He said the issue cannot be lightly taken and the government has already convened an all-political party meeting on the issue.

A committee has been formed with legal experts from the Bar association and the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System to look into the sensitive issue, the Chief Minister asserted.

Although it is taking time, the public should go hand in hand with the government to bring an amicable solution to the issue, Chief Minister Ibobi continued.

IMPHAL, August 13 : Frisking and checking by State security forces have increased ahead of 67th Independence Day celebrations.

Independence Day observation in Manipur has always been boycotted by various revolutionary groups of Manipur. Since the boycott, Independence Day celebrations have been minimal in the State.

Thought State security forces have beefed up security, a full-fledged celebration had never been possible since the imposition of the boycott.

India got its independence in 1947 while Manipur was merged into the Indian Union only in 1949. On the charge that Manipur was annexed into the Indian Union, the revolutionary parties of Manipur have been boycotting the Independence Day celebrations in Manipur.

On the other hand, Independence Day is celebrated each year amidst tight security within the short distance between Kangla Fort and First Manipur Rifles Ground.

Manipur Patriots’ Day falls on 13th August every year just two days ahead of the Independence Day. Both the days are celebrated with all the VVIPs of Manipur including the Governor, Chief Minister and Deputy CM of the State in attendance.

Prior to Independence Day, traffic regulations for passenger vehicles have been differently regularised creating chaotic situation in the traffic.

Patriots’ Day is observed in many parts of Manipur by various local clubs. Many of the clubs also organised cleanliness drives to commemorate Patriots’ Day.

Our Bishnupur Correspondent adds: A search operation in connection with the coming Independence Day celebration was conducted at Moirang Sribol Leikai, Bishnupur District today.

The operation was headed by dy SP (cdo) N John and OC Moirang PS S Surjaboro.

Seven non-locals, five bail-outs and three suspects who were without proper identifications were picked up during the search operation conducted from 4.30am to 6.15 am.

UKHRUL, August 13: Even as construction work of the NH-150 along the Imphal-Ukhrul route has promptly resumed with the end of the United Naga Council’s (UNC) ten-day blanket ban on National Projects in Naga areas on Sunday last, the Affected Land Owners’ Association (ALOA) has threatened to heighten its stricture on the progress of the work as the concerned authorities have allegedly turned a deaf ear to their plea for redressal of the affected land owners’ grievances and not bothered to respond till date.

The work of expansion of Ukhrul-Yaingangpokpi stretch along the existing national highway to a double-lane road has once again resumed in full swing since the conclusion of the ban imposed by the apex Naga body on August 10 last, disclosed a highly placed source on Wednesday, while adding that a couple of JCB bulldozers are now being used for cutting the road at Hungpung village area.

Sources further informed that workers of BRTF/GREF are also now being engaged in construction of RCC retaining walls, underground water passages/canals etc. along the road as usual since the past few days. On the other hand, sources from the Affected Land Owners’ Association (ALOA) has today informed that the body is bracing to strictly enforce its stricture on the progress of the said expansion work, alleging that the concerned authorities have till date not responded to their request for an amicable settlement of their due compensation.

“We have no other options but to deploy our volunteers to enforce the ban now,” disclosed the source adding that the same will be worked out within a few days’ time.

It may be recalled here that ALOA had earlier announced that a ban has been imposed on the work progress with effect from August 4 last citing failure of the concerned authorities to address their grievances.

The body has been demanding the government to settle the payment of compensation to all the affected land owners of the stretch from Finch Corner to Dungrei Junction by way of immediate conduct of survey to ensure inclusion of land owners whose names had been left out from the published list and fixation of compensation rate as per the Land Acquisition Act 2013 amonst others.

By Deepak Shijagurumayum

IMPHAL, August 13: The Karang Island is located in the middle of the Loktak Lake, which is the largest fresh water lake in the whole of North East India. It is considered a boon for Manipur especially for those residing in and around the lake. Fishing is the main source of livelihood. The lake caters to the need of many people, but the big question is, “Is life really easy out there?” when pondered upon, it is not so.

Thanga is one of the important tourist centers of Manipur and the most attractive spot is Thanga Karang, an Island surrounded by Loktak on all sides. The Island is like a small peak and was covered by thick forest at one time. But now it has completely changed because of human settlements. Karang island has more than 3000 human population.

Boat is the only mode of transportation. There are three schools on the island. One Government Primary school, and another aided upper primary school, which are in sorry state. Those who can afford send their children to Moirang for studies.

Sayalaxmi (name changed), who is a 6th standard student in a local school explained how she go to her school everyday. She said, “ My school is a bit far away from my home. First, I’ve to travel by boat to reach the mainland and after that I have to walk three kilometers to reach my school.

The same is true for most of the students on this isalnd. Occasionally strong winds and bad weather condition add up to their hardship.

Dislocated Phumdis get accumulated in one place, which make the boats difficult to sail. There is no proper place to take shelter during the torrential rains and bad weather. Sometimes Sayaluxmi and her friends even miss their exams.

Thoiba, who reads in 3rd standard said, “Sometimes, while returning from my school, I get stuck in Thanga area because of the displaced phumdis. Elder students will swim across the lake and we will be left alone”. He added, “with nowhere to go we get hungry and tired, and we cry”

Even though the island is surrounded by fresh water, at times the island faces the problem of water scarcity. Accumulated phumdis can hamper the food supplies.

In 2007, the CM had promised to build a hanging bridge from Thanga to Karang but as of now, we don’t see anything happening, said one villllage elder. On top of that, he recently announced building of yet another rope bridge connecting Karang and Sendra, we are still waiting, he added.

Spirit of Patriots’ Day must pass live on through generations say senior citizens

IMPHAL, August 13: The Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) and All Manipur Recognised Private Schools’ Welfare Association, Manipur observed Patriots’ Day at the Gandhi Memorial Hall and Lamyanba Shanglen

IMPHAL, August 13: The Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) and All Manipur Recognised Private Schools’ Welfare Association, Manipur observed Patriots’ Day at the Gandhi Memorial Hall and Lamyanba Shanglen respectively today.

Speaking on the occasion of the Patriots’ Day at Lamyanba Shanglen, Senior Citizen for Society, Manipur general secretary L Sadananda Singh said that the courage shown by martyrs of the state to get freedom from the British Empire was remarkable and must be honoured.

Expressing that the Anglo-Manipuri War fought in the year 1891 was one of the significant wars waged against the British Empire, he said the war to get freedom from the British Empire was fought collectively cutting across all communities.

The day is not commemorated only in remembrance of Thangal General and Bir Tikendrajit but also to remember those brave souls who laid down their lives to get freedom from the British Empire, he said opining that it is a must for the present generation to pass on the awareness of this landmark historical event to the next generation of the State.

Continuing that various wars have been fought in various places of the world for freedom, he said it was because freedom is the most important thing for any individual to live their lives with dignity.

It is a question worth asking whether the people of the State enjoy real freedom or not, he said adding that under the cover of AFSPA, the armed forces have plundered the liberty of ordinary lives even though India is a democratic country.

He further said that there is only political democracy in the State but not in its entirety as a spirit of freedom.

During the observance of the Patriots’ Day in both the places, floral tributes were paid to the portraits of the martyrs.

In connection with the Patriots’ Day, the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council (MSSLC) performed a Shumang Leela titled Mareibak Ningba Koirengsana at Iboyaima Sumang Leela Sanglen.

Speaking at the function, MSSLC president Ph Gunachandra Sharma said that Shumang Leela has the ability to educate and inform the public in a major way.

The confiscated consignment include 37 cases of Kingfisher beer, 15 cases of Blue Riband whisky, 25 cases of Officer Choice whisky, two cases of Imperial Blue, 46 cases of Bagpiper whisky, two cases and 20 separate cans of Haywards beer, 15 cases and 336 separate bottles of Foster beer, 16 cases of OC (blue), four cans of Pallone beer, 42 cases of Ramomov Whisky, 21 cases of Mc Dowell whisky, two cases of Tubourg beer, two cases of Budwisers and 11 tin of fermented rise to be used for brewing local booze.

The SP said the owner of the consignment is still absconding; however, he will be produced before the media once he is arrested, he added.
