JOINT PRESS RELEASE

Students and activists participate in a candle light vigil against the extremeties by Israeli state in Palestine

More than 200 students and activists under the banner of NEFIS (North East Forum for International Solidarity) and KYS (Krantikari Yuva Sangathan) participated in a candle light vigil yesterday 25th August against the extremeties of Israeli state in Gaza. Students and activists assembled in Arts Faculty, North Campus and carried out a candle light vigil from Arts Faculty to Vishwavidyalay metro station. North campus echoed with slogans like ‘No more blood for oil’, ’US imperialism Down! Down!’.

Students and activists participate in a candle light vigil against the extremeties by Israeli state in Palestine

The war on Palestine however is not the most horrifying for the attack on unarmed civilians by one of the world’s most sophisticated armies. Much of its horror lies in the silence that most of the world’s governments have maintained while watching this bloodbath unfold, complicit in the massacre of the Palestinians in their flourishing relations with Israel and their subservience to various extents to the American imperialism that fuels it. The Zionist purging of Arabs from the Palestinian lands has throughout been supported and in fact abetted by the imperialist powers. The US has been pumping in millions of dollars as aid to fund Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land and the slaughtering of its population.

Students and activists participate in a candle light vigil against the extremeties by Israeli state in Palestine

Students and activists participate in a candle light vigil against the extremeties by Israeli state in Palestine

Among others, India maintains particularly close economic and diplomatic ties with Israel. In fact while Indian foreign policy on the Israel-Palestine conflict has over the past few decades taken a decisive turn in the favour of Israel, the coming into power of the Hindu right in India has further strengthened the ideological affinity between the ruling powers of both the countries. Further, this affinity stands on the firm ground of dense economic exchange. Besides trade in other goods, India is the biggest importer of armaments from Israel, contributing to one of Israel’s most important industries while Israel is the largest buyer of diamonds polished in India.

Despite the evident disparity in all manners of resources and strength with their adversary, the Palestinian people continue to fight the occupation with remarkable courage. The only thing that stands with them besides their courage is the solidarity that their struggle has received from people across the world. It is for us to fight beside them, mounting pressure on Israel and the Indian government which offers it tacit support, the primacy the government gives to arms over minimal social security, its repression and butchery of its own people so on and so forth.

A constable of Criminal Investigation Department caught disguised as journalist reflects the blatantly intrusive nature of the Home department. However hard the constable might have tried acting like a journalist, he has been exposed. Along with him, his bosses who have supposedly given the instruction have also been exposed. Evidently, he was not acting his part alone. There are more members of his tribe snooping around at the premises of the Manipur Press Club. Let it be known that the more they try to act, the more they will be exposed. Deceiving act of the mole came to light during a press briefing by the volunteers of Joint Committee on implementation of Inner Line Permit system, on August 24. Though the CID constable rallied all his skill in acting, the reporters present in the briefing effortlessly spotted the odd man out. Agreed, the desire and need for intelligence has increased manifold. Great rulers and generals from early period of history relied heavily on their spies. Spying is one of the oldest professions ever known. Author of The Art of War, Chinese general Sun Tzu gave great importance to the role of intelligence. Underscoring that it is necessary to know the enemy beforehand, he wrote ‘If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear a hundred battles. If you know yourself and not the enemy, for every victory you will suffer a defeat. If you know neither yourself nor the enemy, you are a fool and will meet defeat in every battle.’ The aphorism is equally applicable to statecraft as well. To function smoothly, the State has to keep its eyes and ears open. The State Police’s CID is an important entity to collect information about potentially antagonistic groups or individuals and their activities. With numerous movements and demands that have been raised by social groups in the State, it is obviously the felt need of the administration to ascertain the nature of the movements; their modus operandi and areas of operation etc. This would ensure the State apparatus to be prepared in advance of any possible agitation or campaign, which could turn violent. However, the recent incident of the CID constable impersonating as journalist is an infringement of professional space, and unacceptable in all sense of term. Mingling with the journalist, the constable went on to the length of raising queries during the press meet. What prompted the State to send its spies to monitor the activities of the media? It seems, while performing their ‘intelligent duties’, the authorities have overlooked a certain fact – that the population of the State is not that large like other big States. Without much effort, it is easy to know what games people play. For instance, it is not difficult to ascertain how certain people in the locality manages to build palatial houses overnight; how even petty Government officers can own large amount of real estate properties within a short period of time and the like. The State must recognise the undeniable fact that media and the police row in the same boat. Journalists are not the enemy of the State. And perhaps, the foot soldiers of the State intelligence department and their bosses must read carefully Sun Tzu’s last sentence of the above quote.

By R Lester Makang

UKHRUL, August 26: Maintaining that the strategic deployment of increased State security forces in Ukhrul district headquarters is to basically pre-empt any untoward situation in the aftermath of the assassination of an ADC member on July 12 last, the deputy commissioner Hrisheekesh Modak, has on Tuesday said that the security measure is equally to protect the civilians while maintaining peaceful atmosphere in the town.

The DC disclosed this during an interaction with media persons at his office chamber this evening.

He said that there is no cause for apprehension among the public on account of the presence of security forces. He also said no untoward cases of harassment by the security forces have been reported so far.

He nevertheless assured that his administration would not stand any breach of peace on the part of the security personnel, adding that any such cases, if they do happen, should be immediately brought to his notice.

Reiterating that the township is peaceful and that his administration is closely keeping tabs on the current situation, he further informed that his priority is to ensure public safety while maintaining law and order.

Incidentally, this assurance came in the midst of growing apprehension among the public that the security forces might go on a violent spree and commit excesses against the innocent civilians any time.

Meanwhile, deploring the unfortunate incident of bashing up of Ukhrul SDPO and his driver while on duty in good faith on Sunday evening, DC Modak appealed to all to refrain from breaking the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the town.

IMPHAL, Aug 26: There will be a shortage of food if anything affects agricultural activities in a country where people depend heavily on agriculture, stated Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof H Nandakumar Sharma while speaking as the president of an awareness programme on ‘Climate change in Agriculture’ at the premises of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in Lamphel today. The awareness programme was organised under the guidance of National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture.

Scientists are finding ways to curb climate change and will eventually succeed, he said, however, the main difficulty is controlling natural calamities which are unpredictable. Predicting climate is way too difficult, he added.
