IMPHAL, June 3: The Great June Uprising, Unity Day 2013 observation committee has condoled the death of 21 year old girl from the state at her rented room in Chirag, South Delhi on May 29.

Speaking at a press conference, KT Rahaman, chairman of the Great June Uprising, Unity Day 2013 at UCM office, condemned both the state and central governments for not taking befitting action in trying to find the culprit(s) even after six days since the incident.

He further said the MPs of the state should take full responsibility to take up the issues faced by students and others of the state in other parts of the country in the Parliament.

He further said that the state government should take up precautionary measures for the security of the students who are studying in other part of the state.

Speaking at the press conference Nabachandra, vice chairman, the Great June Uprising, Unity Day 2013 said after persistent demand by North East communities residing in Delhi, the Malviya Nagar Police station, agreed to register a case in connection with the suspicious death of the girl which is very unfortunate and condemnable as they had failed to perform their duty well.

It clearly depicts that the people of the mainland India discriminate against the NE people.

Meanwhile, coming to the June 18 observation, he has appealed to all not to observe any entertainment programs on the day of the observation.

IMPHAL, June 3: A new twist has emerged in the case of the death of a woman, a resident of Samram Makha Leikai, Thoubal who had killed herself by consuming poison in the evening of May 25.

Contrary to the claim of the dead woman’s mother that her daughter’s husband, Ningthoujam Surjit, a Village Defence Force personnel posted at Tentha post was having extra marital affair which provoked her daughter to take the extreme step; the husband has today made the counter charge that it was his deceased wife who was the one having an extra-marital affair.

Speaking to media persons at a press conference called at Manipur Press Club, the husband while clarifying on the charges against him said his mother in law’s charges of him leading an adulterous life are baseless and unfounded.

Elected member of the Samram Makha Leikai Gram Panchayat, Jiten Kabrambam, who was also present at the conference, seconded Surjit’s statement and dismissed the allegations of Surjit`s mother-in-law that he had tortured his wife as baseless.

He said a day after the incident, police had arrested three of Surjit’s family members including his mother, sister and sister in law, but were let off in the evening of the same day.

This means that they are innocent and had no hand in the death, he said.

Surjit further clarified that he had never tortured his wife but on May 18, he had chided his wife because she had failed to cut the fodder for their cattle following which, she left the house and failed to return for three days.

JIRIBAM, June 3: Concerned with the low pass percentage in the recently declared Class X and XII exams conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur and the Council of Secondary Education, Manipur in the Jiribam Sub Division; the Manipuri Students’ Federation, Jiribam Branch has held the state government and the Jiribam Higher Secondary School teachers responsible for the low percentage.

A press release of the student body has alleged that the teachers are only enjoying their salaries and staying at Imphal instead of staying at their posting places.

The press release further went on to alleged that a teacher for engineering & drawing teacher, an English teacher and a Geography teacher have failed to return to Jiribam school after going back to Imphal, even though the classes have already started.

It has further questioned the government of Manipur on what basis the teachers are drawing their salaries.

The road and bridge could be constructed at any convenient time but human resource should be improved at the moment so that the much said ‘quality education’ would prevail.

The press statement further reminded of a sit in protest that was staged against the shortage of teachers after the transfer of two teachers.

Further commenting on the government inaction, the press statement cited examination related statistics and said only eight students have passed in the HSLC examination though 135 students had appeared and 284 (Arts 170, Science 94, and Commerce 20) students had appeared in the class XII, though only 56 (Arts 21, Science 36) students could pass the examination.

The death of a 22-year old native girl in her rented flat at Malviya Nagar in New Delhi is unfortunate but along with the charge of ‘insensitivity’ that is being foisted on the Malviya Nagar police for not taking down an FIR with regard to the case, the same charge should also hold true of all the people who are sharing the photographs of the dead girl in various social networking sites and some local newspapers published here. When cases of people of the state being killed or molested takes place in another state of the country, there is an immediate cry of ‘injustice’ with a convenient collective amnesia over the state of the safety of citizens of the state and its women. People and groups will converge to call for justice while social networking sites will see pages being created where there will be rants. But something of the same nature happens in the state and apart from JACs that will be in agitation mode for some time, the matter dies a death in course of time. What lies forgotten is that the metros of the country are no safe place with rising number of crimes. A casual scan of the national papers will all too clearly tell the story of how cities and metros are becoming safe haven for crimes being committed: against natives of that particular state or against those coming in from outside as the workforce of the place or as students seeking education. The horrific Delhi rape case that left a 23 year old paramedical student dead and a nation stunned was in fact not someone from Delhi but someone who like the many people who go from our own state and from the region to other places for ‘something better’. She was from neighboring Uttar Pradesh. The point here is not to make light of the death of the 22 year old state native but to emphasize that crime is not restricted to who it is committed against and neither can the condemnation of the crime after seeing who it is being committed against.

Take the case of the Delhi gang rape incident, which led to people of all walks of life coming together to say that ‘enough is enough’. Tellingly enough, even as candle light memorials and rallies were taken out across most parts of the country calling for exemplary punishment of the six accused in the Delhi case last year, there was no whimper in the state. There was not a single group or civil society group that came forth then to add voice to the call going around the country then. This sense of convenience when something touches our own and total indifference for the very same thing when it happens to someone else is disconcerting and says a lot of our own role and the lack of responsibility and our understanding of the larger scheme of things. Rather, this clamor to play the role of the accuser plays out to an atrocious level where it leads to an indirect party of the very ‘insensitivity’ that we so easily accuse others of. The sharing of photos of the deceased in the Malviya Nagar case is in total bad taste and it cannot just be explained away by saying that the photos are proof of what may actually have happened with the girl. A social network is definitely not the forum to share pictures of such a sensitive situation as such forums are open and do not have any strictures of privacy. Those using the pictures to rally people sentiment and opinions on the case must realize that the family members of the girl are still going through a period of grief and mourning along with trying to get the Delhi police authorities to undertake due investigations. There is something called privacy that people need to take into account. Voices of support can be gathered without the use if the said photos in question. There must be a consensus too on building voices against crimes and on the lack of proper legal and police processes per se. Total silence when crimes happen to other people, other places is a poor reflection of our own accountability. By the same yardstick, we cannot question why there is a lack of interest when our own ends up as a victim of a crime in someone else’s backyard.
