IMPHAL, November 24: In an impressive feat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manipur today won the bye-poll in the two constituencies of Thangmeiband and Thongju, handing over a resounding defeat for the ruling party in both Assembly constituencies.

In Thangmeiband Constituency, BJP’s Khumukcham Joykishan emerged the winner with a total vote count of 12,104 while his nearest rival Jyotin Waikhom of the Congress secured 10,197. The only other candidate Dr G Tonsana of the Manipur Democratic People’s Front received only 55 votes, while 72 persons pressed the None of the Above (NOTA) button.

In Thongju Constituency, BJP’s Thongam Bishwajit defeated his nearest rival by a margin of nearly 3000 votes which is far worse than the last election when Bishwajit had contested on a Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress ticket in 2012.

According to the election results, Bishwajit secured 14605 votes while his rival candidate Bijoy Koijam of the Congress secured 11393.

Dr Tonsana of the MDPF secured only 54 votes, while, 78 voters opted for NOTA.

There were no reject votes in both the assembly constituencies.

Many perceive the development to be a game changer to the almost 15 years of Congress rule in the State.

It may be mentioned that the Thongju and Thangmeiband Assembly seats were left vacant after the State Assembly Speaker disqualified the MLAs Th Bishwajit Singh and Kh Joykishan on May 27 under the anti-defection law following a petition moved by Andro MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar.

Along with the two MLAs, Wangoi MLA O Lukhoi was also disqualified however, following an appeal before the High Court, the court had ruled in favour of the Wangoi MLA.

Nagaland: Former Speaker Lohe lambasted Zeliang for disrespecting local sentiments

KOHIMA, Aug 25 (NEPS): Former Nagaland Assembly Speaker Z Lohe lambasted the TR Zeliang Government for relentlessly pursuing for setting up of “Rani Gaidinliu Memorial Museum or Statue” here at the State capital, Kohima much against the wishes of the citizens of the State.

Talking to NEPS here on Tuesday, the veteran politician questioned the very motive of Chief Minister Zeliang for his going ahead with the proposals of setting up of “Rani Gaidinliu’s Memorial” centers at Kohima in the midst of oppositions from all the quarters.

Lohe said Nagas were Christians and Zeliang himself was basically a Christian. “How can he (Zeliang) worship Rani Gaidinliu who was a cult leader,” he asked. He also questioned as to how a building can be dedicated to a “cult leader” and where was the relevance here in Nagaland.

“In fact, we have so many Naga pioneers like AZ Phizo, Dr Imkongliba, P Shilu Ao, to name a few, and without whose leadership and sacrifices, people of Nagaland would not have come this far,” Lohe stated and said, “It will only be befitting to have any memorial statues or museums or institutions in their names in our State.”

The Government should respect the sentiments of the people because going ahead with such proposals to the extent of setting up a statue, museum, etc. in the name of a cult leader at the cost of indigenous local people was tantamount to disrespecting their sentiments and generations, Lohe asserted. “Such moves are nothing but a big insult to the people of Nagaland,” he said.

The former Nagaland Assembly Speaker, who was also Adviser to former Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, also alleged that Zeliang had no any other interests but to make money out of such proposals with the support of Center where the BJP was at the helm of affairs. There were anxieties that the RSS would take advantage from the present development in Nagaland in order to promote their Hindu ideology. “But we cannot allow this thing to happen in Nagaland,” he stated.

State BJP president likely to change in two-three days

Imphal, July 14: The rebel group within the State BJP has increased its lobbying for removing Thounaojam Chaoba from the post of the party president in New Delhi after the new BJP national president Amit Shah assumes charge. They are meeting Central leaders for removing the State party president, a source said.

The dissident leaders in Delhi have said that within two to three days, a final decision on removing the State party president will be taken.

The suspension orders issued by president Chaoba are not approved by central leaders of the BJP. About 14 dissident leaders are lobbying with national leaders for removing Th Chaoba from his post.

Chances of Chaoba’s removal from the post are high because the Central leaders have replaced the Tamil Nadu BJP president recently after party members of that State have held discussions with senior party leaders and the national president, said a source.

BJP Manipur Pradesh president Th Chaoba failed twice to visit Delhi after central leaders asked him to submit the expenditure report of the recent Lok Sabha polls. Some senior leaders have completed their preparations for selecting a new president of the State BJP in the near future, added the source.

Meanwhile, a Th Chaoba led team of four is in New Delhi to meet various NDA leaders.

He is also lobbying with national leaders to let him complete his tenure as the State party president till 2015.

According to a source, Th Chaoba is also lobbying with national BJP leaders to complete his tenure.

Allegations on the president include foisting his ideas on the party without the consent of past leaders in the last elections and other party activities, developing the State office on his own without consulting anyone, corruption and misuse of funds sanctioned by the party high command in the Lok Sabha polls etc, the source said.

70 percent of party members are in favour of removing the State party president. In such a situation, the centre leaders have not decided till date on whether he will be removed or not. However, a series of incidents indicate that a new president will be elected within two to three days, the source said.

Nagaland: NCP cannot suspend members of other political party – Dr TM Lotha

By Oken Jeet Sandham

KOHIMA, Jun 26 (NEPS): The news of the formal merger of three NCP MLAs, Dr TM Lotha, Imtilemba Sangtam and Mmhonlumo Kikon, with the BJP in Nagaland, which was done on June 16, 2014, refuse to die down as the NCP National Party continues to mislead the general public on the “merger” with the BJP in Nagaland.

Reacting to a news item appeared in section of local dailies that “NCP National president Sarad Pawar, angered over the second such defection of NCP legislators in the State, has issued suspension orders against the three – ex-president Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr TM Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon,” Dr Lotha wondered as to how they would issue such orders on June 17, 2014 in the “post-merger” development.
“Because the three NCP MLAs including myself with our supporters have formally merged with the BJP in Nagaland on June 16, 2014 and all the constitutionally relevant papers to this effect have also been officially submitted to the Honourable Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly on the same day at 3:00 PM,” he asserted. He further termed as “ridiculous and misleading” the so-called “suspension orders” issued by the NCP National Party on June 17, 2014 in the post-merger of the three NCP MLAs.
“I want to further make it very clear that when the three MLAs formally merged with the BJP, they had become bonafide members of that party (BJP), and then the NCP president has no locus standi to suspend another national political party which does not belong to their party,” he said.
Dr Lotha, who was first BJP Home Minister in the DAN-I Ministry, categorically stated that there was nothing wrong for them as elected members of a political party to merge with another political party as such exercise is permitted as per the “10th Schedule of the Anti-Defection Law” of the Constitution of India.

Asked why he had to leave the NCP in Nagaland, Dr Lotha said there was no future for NCP in Nagaland and they could not afford remaining as NCP MLAs when there was no future. “So after thorough deliberations, we have resolved to formally merge along with our supporters with the BJP in Nagaland for the larger interest of the people of Nagaland and the BJP,” he stated.

Asked his comment on the delay of issuing any notification to their merger claim by the Speaker, he said after submission of all the relevant documents with regard to their three NCP MLAs’ merger claim with the BJP in Nagaland to him (Speaker) on June 16, 2014, they had also provided some more additional documents as desired by him. Besides that the former NCP Office Bearers led by Imtilemba Sangtam appeared before him on June 24, 2014 to validate their credentials. “I think the ball is in his court,” he added.

KOHIMA, June 24 (NEPS):  Former office bearers of NCP, Nagaland Unit led by its former president Imtilemba Sangtam, MLA, have appeared before the Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Chotisuh Sazo at his Office Chamber on Tuesday to validate their resolution passed on June 16, 2014 for their formal “merger claim” with the BJP in Nagaland.

Sazo, who was out for a week, reached Kohima late last night and could not attend to the documents of the 3 Nagaland NCP MLAs’ merger claim with the BJP in Nagaland. He, however, called the Nagaland Unit of NCP’s former office bearers and their president to appear before him at his office on Tuesday and validate their signatures appended to the “resolution” passed by them on June 16, 2014 for their merger claim along with their three MLAs with the BJP in Nagaland.
At about 3 PM on Tuesday, the former NCP Nagaland Unit office bearers led by Imtilemba Sangtam, MLA, appeared before the Speaker at his office chamber and verified all their signatures appended to their resolution for merger claim with the BJP, Nagaland.
Talking to NEPS soon after appearing before the Speaker, Sangtam said the Speaker was now satisfied after crosschecking their credentials and expressed the hope that “Official Notification” for the “Merger” of three NCP MLAs along with their party supporters with the BJP, Nagaland could be issued by Wednesday.
Talking to NEPS at his office chamber on Tuesday, Speaker Sazo disclosed that he had called the NCP office bearers and their president to appear before him at his office as he wanted to crosscheck their credentials on their “Resolution” passed on June 16, 2014 of their formal “merger claim” with the BJP, Nagaland.
Sazo also disclosed that he received documents from the three NCP MLAs—Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr TM Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon—with their party resolutions and Nagaland BJP’s acceptance resolution of the merger on June 16, 2014. “But I sought some more additional documents from them to furnish whether there was any resolution of the NCP National Political Party deciding to merge their party with the BJP or any authorization to the State Unit of NCP to take any decision in this regard. At the same time, whether there was any resolution of the BJP National Political Party accepting the merger of the NCP with BJP” he said.
“Because this is Constitutional matters and I need to thoroughly examine by consulting with legal and constitutional experts before any official notification with regard to the merger claim is issued from my office,” Sazo explained. “At the same time, I also have to listen to the views and counter views expressed by the parties concerned to the present development following the three NCP MLAs’ merger claim with the BJP.”
Asked when he would give official notification to the three NCP MLAs’ merger claim with the BJP, Nagaland, the Speaker said, “May not be today.” Although he did not specify the date of issuing the official notification, it is believed that “Official Notification” for the three NCP MLAs’ merger claim with BJP, Nagaland may be issued by Wednesday.

KOHIMA, June 22 (NEPS): “An Official Notification” of the 3 Nagaland NCP MLAs’ merger with the BJP in Nagaland is expected by Monday and the Nagaland Assembly Office has already received the additional documents from the three and also merger acceptance letter from the BJP National Party.
Talking to NEPS over phone from Guwahati, Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Chotisuh Sazo, who is reaching State capital tomorrow, confirmed that his office had received additional documents from the 3 MLAs, Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr TM Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon and also a letter from National BJP Office of accepting the three MLAs’ merger with their party (BJP) in Nagaland.
Sazo hinted that he would examine the documents tomorrow. “Hopefully official notification of their merger with the BJP will be issued after I examine the documents,” he stated.
It may be mentioned that 3 NCP MLAs, Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr TM Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon, along with their supporters formally merged with the BJP on June 16. NCP MLA Khumo refused to join the merge. But the Speaker, however, explained that he had been examining their documents by consulting constitutional experts before issuing official acceptance from his office, besides he sought certain information from the 3 MLAs to furnish whether there was any resolution of the NCP National Political Party deciding to merge their party with the BJP or any authorization to the State Unit of NCP to take any decision in this regard,” the Speaker pointed out. “At the same time, whether there was any resolution of the BJP National Political Party accepting the merger of the NCP with BJP.”
Dr TM Lotha, MLA and Parliamentary Secretary, said the documents submitted to Speaker’s Office on June 16, 2014 for formal merger of 3 NCP MLAs with their supporters with BJP was done by fulfilling all the laid down rules of the 10th Schedule of the Anti-Defection Law.
“Yet the Speaker has sought more documents, we have already submitted to his office,” a State BJP party functionary said and further hoped that, “the Speaker will issue official notification for the merger as we have fulfilled all the laid down rules of the 10th Schedule of the Anti-Defection Law.”

Home minister has asked State to apprise on law and order situation
IMPHAL, May 30: President of BJP Manipur unit Thounoujam Chaoba lambasted the state Home department for its complete failure to maintain law and order in the state.

Chaoba rushed to visit the victims of the bomb blast that occurred in Singjamei May 29, just after his return from Delhi.

It may be mentioned that two persons were killed while several others were injured in the Chingamakhong bomb blast areounf 5.15pm Thursday.

The victims are undergoing treatment at RIMS, Shija, Raj Polyclinic, Advance Hospital and Iboyaima Hospital Singjamei.

Speaking to the media on the sideline of his visit, Chaoba alleged that the blast had occurred because of the state government’s negligence in maintaining law and order.

He said Singjamei is in the heart of the Imphal. The blast occurred at a place where securities are deployed round the clock.

State is now facing the worst law and order situation Chaoba alleged.

He further informed that the Union Home minister Rajnath Singh has taken serious note of the incident.

Accordingly, the minister has demanded a proper appraisal of the law and order situation in the state within 48 hours, he said.

The BJP president strongly condemned the incident and termed it as an inhuman act.

He said such heinous crime should not be repeated in the future. Chaoba said he will meet the Chief Minister to demand proper ex-gratia for the victims.

On the other hand, State deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam also visited the victims of the Singjamei bomb blast, who are now recuperating at different hospitals.

In a defensive tone, the Home minister speaking to the media said there has been no negligence on the part of his department. “This is not an isolated case, even in highly advanced country like US, shooting incident of school children happens”, Gaikhangam said.

Gaikhangam claimed that with the modern technology a powerful bomb can be assembled very easily.

He said that there could be possibility of outsourcing the plantation of bombs to people like drug users who are in need of money.

Condemning the incident, he sought the corporation of the public in preventing such incidents.

Gaikhanagam also visited Rinku Khumukcham Editor of Imphal Times who is currently undergoing treatment in Shija Hospital following an accident, and offered him financial assistance.

Imphal, May 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party Manipur Pradesh has strongly refuted the news report published in local dailies that there is a likelihood of Th Chaoba’s replacement as the president of the party.

Spokesperson of the party, Sarda Adhikarimayum speaking to the media today at the party’s office said that the report is baseless.

She further claimed that the party’s position has only stregthened and improved under the leadership of Th Chaoba.

The BJP since 1980 could not achieve anything remarkable in the state. The party could garner fewer votes in 2009 LS poll, but the party’s vote count has increased this time under Chaoba’s leadership, she said.

O Mahesh president Bharatiya Yuva Morcha of BJP echoing the same line stated that news report could affect the party’s image. He further said that though the party does not have a single MLA in the state, its popularity is growing in the country.

He urged that such news should be published only after getting confirmed reports. He said the matter will be discussed with the president once he returns from Delhi after attending the swearing in ceremony of the Prime Minister.

N Ibemcha president Mahila Morcha said that now BJP is developing rapidly and in such triumphant moment such baseless reports in the newspaper is very unfortunate.

Nabachandra Kishan Morcha president said there was a time when the media had neglected the party. But now everyone is talking about the party after its election performance, he said and added, the rumour can also be taken as a positive attribute in the development of the party.
