IMPHAL, January 19: A bomb blast occurred at 7.20 pm on Jan 18th at Wangjing Tentha Block Congress office, Wangjing Bazaar. No casualties were reported. Another bomb blast took place inside the residential complex of M. Herojit of Bamon Kampu, a Congress worker, today around 3.30 am. In another incident, a bomb was lobbed at the residence of Nangbam Roshan at Taret Khun, Khundrakpam at 6.30 am today. However, the bomb did not go off. Roshan is said to be a worker of Deputy Speaker Thokchom Lokeshor. An IED was recovered near the residence of Speaker Irengbam Hemochandra, at Maibam Leirak Machin Singjmei Chingna Makha at 11.30 am today. Singjamei police officials and Manipur police bomb squad later collected the bomb safely.

IMPHAL, January 19: The Maoist Communist Party warns that individuals who are in cahoots with the Congress and the CPI despite the boycott imposed by the outfit have been identified and if they do not cease their election activities will be awarded fitting punishment before or after the conclusion of the elections.

A release by Nonglen Meitei, publicity and propaganda secretary of the outfit further states that certain positive changes have been observed in the conduct of the present election as compared to yesteryears.But, the distribution of bribe money to woo voters have increased manifold.

There are certain ministers who have been trying to make a mockery out of the dictates imposed for the welfare of the public and the workers aiding them have been identified. The Maoist pointed five workers of the Chief Minister, six workers of minister P Parijat,five workers of N Biren and five workers of minister K ranjit. The release also added that one journalist from Heingang has been added not as a journalist but as a congress worker.

The publicity programme which began on January 16 will be conducted at 80 places till its conclusion on January 24.

IMPHAL January 19: The Social Democratic Party of India today submitted a memorandum to the Governor, Gurcharan Jagat Singh, seeking his assistance in ordering a governmental enquiry into the killing of Md. Ishaque Ali amd Mustakim of Lilong Mairenkhul near Uran Chiru MASSI complex yesterday maintaining that they were innocent citizens. Condemning the state police commandos who were involved in the killing, the SDPI has demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakhs each and action against the security personnel including the responsible officer.

IMPHAL, January 19: The two persons who were killed in a shoot out with Imphal East Commandoes yesterday at Urum Chiru, MAASI road are innocent, said their families today. The two persons identified as Md. Ishaque Ali (25) s/o Mv. Rajaq the other Md. Mushtaqkim (25 yrs) s/o Md Abul Hasan, both residents of Lilong Tairen Makhong Mairenkhun are civilians claimed family members. A Joint Action Committtee against the killing of the two persons has been formed, which has demanded for a judicial inquiry. Their bodies have not been accepted for final rites. Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, JAC Convenor, MD Abdul Qayum said Ishaq had picked up Mushtaqin in the afternoon to fetch petrol from Kakwa. Shortly after, they were said to have been picked up by a team of Imphal East CDO. “We deem the incident as a case of fake encounter. We demand a judicial inquiry into the incident” said Qayum. A memorandum of demands has also been submitted to the CM today.

IMPHAL, Jan 18: A one day public hearing on private school fee structure was held today at Ima Khunthokhanbi Sanglen, DM College Campus with Prof W. Nabakumar, Dean of Human and Environmental Science MU as moderator and Thokchom Suresh, President of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) presiding over the meeting. The parents and guardians of students in private educational institutions and mission schools speaking at the meeting said that admission and monthly tuition fees in private schools were being increased. They further maintained that they would give full support to any initiatives taken up by AMSU with regard to fee hikes in private schools. Five resolutions were passed today, including calling for a joint meting of guardians and teaching staff of private schools on January 29 at the same meeting venue. A committee has also been initiated to look into the matter of fee hikes, comprising of Dr N. Santakumar as Convenor, L. Chandra as Co-Convenor and three other members.

IMPHAL, Jan 18: Two unidentified persons are said to have been killed today in a firing stand off between armed militants and Imphal East Police commandoes today around 2.30 pm at Urum Chiru, MAASI road under Irilbung Police station. Police sources say that the firing took place while the police commando team was undertaking search operations in the said area after getting reliable information about the presence of armed militants. Further, 7 Chinese made grenades, 3 RDX pieces weighing 3 and half kg (total), 3 remote circuit boards, 6 detonators, 3 electric detonators, 3 batteries, 1 .32 pistol and a van (regd number MNOX1004, light sky blue) were recovered in the operation. The two dead bodies have not been identified so far and are being kept in the JNIMS morgue for official identification. All bombs recovered in the operation were set off by Manipur police bomb squad later at the area of the firing.

IMPHAL, Jan 18: Some villagers living around Yairok Lok area in Langol hill area who had set out to collect firewood found a highly decomposed male body hanging from a tree in a secluded area of Yairok Lok around 9 am today. The villagers informed Lamphel police who rushed in to recover the dead body. According to the police, the dead person found hanging from his own belt, looks about 45 years. The body was clothed in grey trousers and a white vest. The body would have been hanging for over a year said the source. The dead body has been kept at RIMS morgue.

IMPHAL, Jan 18:  Demanding quick relief for the victims of the Sangakpham bomb blast in August last year, Conflict Widow Forum organized a day-long sit-in-protest at Sangakpham Bazar today.

Speaking to media person, the secretary of the forum, T Ambravati deplored the inability of the state government to provide justice to the victims even after identification and announcement of the NSCN-IM as the perpetrator of the crime. She further demanded trial of the case under a special court so that prompt justice for the victims and stern punishment of those behind the blast becomes a reality.  She said the compensation provided by the state government had fallen way short of providing relief to victims and families of those affected by the incident. 

She urged upon the political parties to include clauses for protection of civilians in their election manifestos.

IMPHAL, Jan 18: Troops of 27 Assam Rifles along with lady police representatives launched operation in the area  and  apprehended  one lady UNLF cadre, Bimota alias Echan,20, daughter of late Okram Bijen of Sugnu Napath Awang Leikai at Soura Bazar of Thoubal district today. She has been handed over to Kakching police station.

In another incident, combined team of 15 Assam Rifles and 23 Assam Rifles apprehended one PULF(Azad) cadre identified as ss Pvt Mamak Amuba Anwar Hussain alias Mangal,24, son of Nanatomba of Yairipok Nimgthounal Changay during combing opration at Yairipok Ningthonai Chingay today. He has been handed over to Yairipok Police station.

Later, discovering the transportation of illicit liquor at Litan market, troops of  23 Assam Rifles launched an operation and recovered 300 litres of illicit liquor from a Tata Sumo with registration No.MN 01W 0695 yesterday. The dealer identified as KA Athar,60, of Pasrei, Ukhrul was handed over to Litan Police station along with the recovered liqour.

IMPHAL, Jan 17: BJP national vice-president, Rajya Sabha member and famous actress of yesteryears, Hema Malini will arrive in Manipur to campaign for her party candidates on Thursday.

As per the schedule released by the state BJP, she will be addressing four public meetings on that day. She starts her program at 11 am with a meeting at Langdum, followed by another at Ningombam Mini Stadium in Thoubal one hour later.

Next, she will travel to Lambui Khongngang Makhong in Uripok assembly constituency for a 2.30 pm appointment with the public and concludes the day with her last program at Imphal Dharmasala half an hour later. 

Another eminent actress and party leader Smruti Irani arrives on next Tuesday in the city and will address the public at Uripok, Thoubal, Hiyanglam.

Thokchom Manihar spoke comprehensively on the setback dealt to the people of Manipur by the inglorious event in chronicling its history. The gathering agreed on the necessity and benefits of the younger generations to keep in touch with their roots and protect their identity. Further, they delved on the need of understanding old texts and scripts to have a better understanding of the culture and traditions of the community.

A general agreement was reached on the rising need for translating the puyas into English in order to widen the scope of spreading the contents of the ancient scripts among the younger generations.
