IMPHAL, December 20: The India International Friendship Society has awarded Moirangthem Marjit Singh with the coveted Indira Gandhi Shiromani Award 2011 for his outstanding individual achievements and distinguished services to the nation.

Moirangthem Marjit Singh who is an assistant professor at the department of computer science and engineering at the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology received the award during a simple function at Speaker Hall, Constitution Club Rafi Marg, New Delhi on December 17.

The award includes a memento and a certificate of excellence.

Moirangthem Marjit Singh hails from Khangabok Pt III Cherapur Leikai

Speaking to IFP, Moirangthem Marjit Singh stated that the society had selected him for the award after perusing his bio-data.

He further stated that, he has had an excellent academic record since his school days topping in almost every examination he had appeared.

According to him he did both his class X and XII from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Kakching.

He further did his Master in Technology from NERIST where he is presently staying as an asst professor.

In 2010, he was also awarded a gold medal for topping in his MIT at NERIST. The medal was handed over by former India President APJ Abdul Kalam.

When asked if he has any message for the youths of the state by this IFP reporter, Marjit stated that there is nothing impossible if one is hard-working and have the patience to endure the hardship. He further urged the youths of the state to be active, hardworking and not to look behind if they want to move forward.

IMPHAL, Dec 19: A joint stakeholders’ report entitled “India: Status of Human Rights in Manipur” was released today by former member of Manipur Human Rights Commission, Yambem Laba in a simple function organized  by Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights in Manipur and the UN at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul.

The said report has been submitted to the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the UN for consideration in the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of India by the UN Human Rights Council in May, 2012.

IMPHAL, Dec 19 (NNN): The United Naga Council 9UNC) has demanded that the the SDPO (police officer) of Ukhrul and his team should be awarded with drastic action immediately for assaulting the general secretary of All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and also for creating public disorder. The UNC also asked the deputy commissioner of Ukhrul district to tender public apology for mishandling the situation.

ANSAM leader Seth A Satshang was allegedly assaulted by SDPO Wungpam Kasar and his team on December 17.

According to UNC, the ANSAM was observing one our daily public curfew in Naga areas in demanding the Alternative Arrangement pending Indo-Naga final settlement outside the Manipur government. It said the peaceful one hour curfew was a symbolic protest and that it is a political action.

DIMAPUR, Dec 19 (NNN): The festive mood in Dimapur was spoilt today by the sound of gun firing.

The stand-off between the NSCN-Khaplang and the NSCN-Khole/Kitovi groups began since Sunday. On Monday, the blank firing began. It all started after the tussle for opening a designated camp at Naharbari in Dimapur arisen.

The NSCN-Khaplang has been planning to set up a camp at Naharbari but the NSCN faction led by Khole and Kitovi opposes.

The local populace and Naga organisations tried their best whole day today to calm the tension. However, from time to time each group opened blank firing. The gun firing sound was heard till this evening.

IMPHAL, Dec 19: The Coordination Committee of KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, UNLF and UPPK have strongly condemned the killing of father and son of Irilbung Water Supply Scheme by suspected KCP (MTF) Kesho Meitei faction.

A statement of the committee mentioned that the act of killing innocent people for ransom is against the revolutionary ethics. The killers have disguised in the name of some KCP factions raised by Indian security forces and get involved in all sorts of extortions and other anti-social activities.

The committee further appealed to the people to remain cautious against such fake revolutionaries who work only for money at the behest of security forces.

IMPHAL, Dec 18: 10 Assam Rifles under the aegis of Logtak Brigade of Red Shield division organized a free medical health care camp at village Haochang on Dec 18. The camp provided free medical checkup and medicines to a total of 250 locals including adults, newborns and school going children.

An official statement has stated that most of the individuals were found suffering from gastritis, worm infection, anaemia, skin infections, respiratory tract infections, gynaecological problems and other diseases. It has also added that the camp was organised by medical officer, captain G Naveen Sheelavant and his team of para medical staff of 10 Assam Rifles.

IMPHAL, Dec 17: Troops of 43 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 59 Mountain Brigade, Red Shield Division apprehended two active cadres of KNF (P) on December 15 from Kanglatombi Bazar.

A release of PIB (Defence Wing) stated that both cadres were carrying out extortion in Kanglatombi Bazar. The apprehended cadres were identified as Soilen Vaiphei, 38, s/o Paojalhum Vaiphai of Ng Phalnom. He joined KRA in 2007 and later defected to KNF (P) in February, 2011. He was the town commander of Saparmaina.

Other cadre was identified as Paothang Khongsai alias PK, 30, s/o Paosei Khongsai of Maojang Saikul. He joined KNF (P) in 2008. He was in charge of food and civil supply department of KNF (P). The apprehendees were handed over to Sekmai PS, added the release.

IMPHAL, Dec 17: A woman was killed in a road accident at around 4:30 pm at Hatta New Checkon Road today.

The deceased woman is yet to be identified.

She was riding at the pillion of a motor bike when a truck ran over her.

The driver of the truck had reportedly surrendered to 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles.

The woman was wearing a white-grey jogging shirt with blue-colour tight jeans and a Converse shoe. She looked like a tribal lady aged about 25-year-old.

The dead body has been deposited at JNIMS mortuary for post-mortem examination.
