The State Government has done it again. Obviously nothing has been learnt from the past and the civil society organisations of Jiribam have every reason to be peeved with the decision of the State Government to go ahead and inaugurate the incomplete developmental projects at the sub-division. It is this penchant of the State Government which the Tangkhul Naga Long used to the hilt to go on the offensive against the State Government, overlooking the ambush on the Chief Minister and his Ministerial team on October 24.

Making education the first priority Governor bang on target

Governor Najma Heptulla could not have put it better. Make education the first priority. The venue and the timing was also just right to come out with such a profound address. Addressing the freshers meet cum literary and cultural meet of Tamphasana Girls’ Higher Secondary School, the Governor hit the right chord by focusing on education and reaching out to the students with her call to be the best in whatever they do.

More than different opinions. More than contrasting stands. It comes much closer to conflicting stands and this is what is worrying. So it stands that the demand that a mechanism be put in place to regulate the inflow of non-local people into the soil of Manipur has met with different stands that border more on conflicting stands and this is best exemplified by the fact that the mortal remains of the nine people killed at Churachandpur in the protest after the three Bills were passed by the State Assembly on August 31 last year are still lying in state.

Boycotting the visit of a political leader is acceptable. However bombing the visit of the particular leader cannot be accepted at all. Seen along this line, the boycott call issued by the Tangkhul Naga Long on the visit of the Chief Minister and some of his men to Ukhrul to inaugurate some projects is acceptable and can be seen within the tenets of democracy where people can lodge protest against the policy and programme of a Government. But not the violence that erupted and was seen all over Ukhrul town when the Chief Minister actually did pay the visit on October 24.

The issues are many. And central to almost all the issues is the ties between the hill and valley people. So from the demand to enforce an Act to regulate the entry of non-local people into the State to the demand that the Meiteis/Meeteis be included in the Scheduled Tribe list of the Constitution of India to the stand off at Manipur University over the reservation for ST students in admission, all these have something to do with the relationship between the hill and valley people.

Present State of Manipur. South Nagalim. Separate administration for the hills and valley. Not clear on the finer details of the Framework Agreement but more than obvious that the demand for a Nagalim or a Greater Nagaland is still very much alive and kicking and this is a point which has been trumpeted on more than one occasion by numerous Naga civil society organisations. It is in line with this that the first conference of the Naga Village Authority of South Nagalim has been convened on October 19 at Tagaramphung village near Senapati district headquarters.

He came, he saw. Whether he conquered or not will perhaps only be known when results of the Assembly election start trickling in next year. But besides this, it is undeniable that the State unit of the BJP is on a high and it has reasons to feel that perhaps Manipur can be the next State in the North East after Assam to go to the BJP. A look at some recent developments should underline this.

In deciding to leave the Congress and join the BJP, Y Erabot, the political strong man from Wangkhei Assembly Constituency has rung out a very important message. The Congress should take note of this. It is not only about an individual leaving the party, but is a reflection of where the BJP stands and this certainly cannot be comfortable for the Congress. A situation unthinkable prior to 2014, but after the BJP routed the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls more than two years back, it has been going from strength to strength and this is also being felt in the political firmament of the State. From no MLA in the 2012 Assembly election, the BJP today has two MLAs who stormed the by election at Thangmeiband AC and Thongju AC. Not without reason that many interpreted the results of the by elections in the two Assembly Constituencies as something more than the loss of the Congress candidates but also the loss of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister. Just recall how the two leaders of the Congress Government went all the way while campaigning for the Congress candidates in the two ACs. Now comes the decision of Y Erabot to shift allegiance to the BJP and things certainly cannot be comfortable for the Congress.

Sports movement in the State Living up to the ‘powerhouse’ title

Home of Mary Kom, Dingku Singh, Laishram Sarita, Nilakamal, Thoiba and the numerous footballers who ply their trade in the top notch clubs of the country for the I League and it is only fitting that the National Sports University will be set up here. Manipur may not yet have produced an Olympic gold medallist or even a silver medallist, but then this is the same with numerous other States in India, which have far bigger population.
