Bishnupur – In search of an old Mandir

(contd from previous issue)
The mandaps are decorated with designed cloth festoons, unique to Manipur. Such festoons designed out of metal were found in the outer surface beautification of the temple of Lord Ibudhou Pakhangba within Kangla Fort complex. In the evening, as we visited Ima Market, we found many Ima tailors busy preparing such cloth festoon for the Yaoshang season.

We too can have good roads

“Roads are the face of development” – Neiphiu Rio, MP and Former Nagaland Chief Minister
As I prepare to go to Aryalur district in Tamil Nadu as an election observer in the last State Assembly elections (May 2016) the first thing I enquired of the said district administration was, – “how far this Aryalur district is located from Chennai and what would be the mode of travel?”.

Schools of scandal

(Contd from previous issue)
Look at the list of the recently elected Ministers in Bihar, their portfolios, and their academic qualifications. One can’t help but laugh in disbelief. Again, the fact that such ineligible rookies and jailbirds in the ministry does not make the mainstream media sit up is a classic case of mystery.

Women’s bodies as terrain of war: Experiences from Manipur

There is no doubt that the military environment is inherently masculine and misogynist. The masculine cults that permeate military establishments are intrinsically anti-female and therefore create a hostile environment for women. Starting from one’s own home, men use women’s bodies to control each other.

Hey society ! Stop fooling me and don’t make me confused that I am me

Sometimes things become so hard in life making you stand in-front of many unanswerable questions. And some will make you go on just like that with, “Hard-Work will Bring Success, Don’t Give Up.” They will never tell you that, “Working Happily will Bring Success.”

Meiteis are demanding Scheduled Tribe status – because (1) Meiteis want to restore equality with other tribal brothers according to Indian Constitution. If Tangkhul is the elder brother of Meiteis, we should have equal status sharing everything just like members of the same family. If Tangkhul is Schedule Tribe, then Meitei who is the younger brother should also be Scheduled Tribe.

Inspite of revolutionary steps of Green Revolution to boost agricultural and horticultural production and White Revolution to boost veterinary production (meat, milk and eggs) undertaken since some decades ago, truckloads of these products are still importing from outside the state everyday. The main reasons for the failure of these two giant steps are the unwillingness of the people of Manipur to work hard, blind neglect of manual works, lack of dignity of labour and lack of incentives and guidance in this regard, inefficient and insufficient water management, non-adoption of advanced methods of farming and modern technology etc, and the unjustified poor condition of road connectivity in the state. The insincerity of most of the unscrupulous government machineries and other stakeholders is also well known. These chronic defects make Manipur still living like a beggar.

Hill – Valley collision without any solution

Perception matters more than fact in politics. This is painfully evident in the unfolding tribal upsurge in Manipur’s hills since August 31, which led to the burning down of the houses of six legislators a tribal parliamentarian and controversial resignation of four tribal NPF legislators.

Print media and political activism

Since the beginning of print media’s interest in covering North East India, CNN IBN or till recently Times Now TV Channel have highlighted racism which has victimized youths of these regions; who are staying in mainland Indian states. I recollect Professor Emeritus TK Oammen who spoke a year earlier on Social Exclusion and inclusiveness at Hyderabad University’s Ambedkar Auditorium and I quote, “For the first time in India’s history in this globalized era, it’s the fair skinned Mongoloid race’s North Easterner who is a victim of racism, we as academicians need to study this ongoing phenomenon from a new perspective as this has become an inevitable reality”. (Late) Nido Tania’s case has become a forerunner in fighting against racism at New Delhi since few years ago till date.

Tree plantation Vs post plantation surveillance

The growing concern over protection of the environment has rapidly developed on a worldwide scale resulting into the United Nations Conference on Human Environment held on 1972 at Stockholm. The awareness on the pollution of environment induced establishment and attention of several agencies like the United Nations Environment Monitoring Systems (UNEMS), the International Referral System (IRS), the United Nations Organization on “Habitat”, the world Health Organization (WHO), the world life organisation (WLO) and other bodies dealing with the environmental problem on a global scale.

Unlike many other governments of countries with strong economic and historical ties with the United Kingdom, India has refrained from officially commenting on the crucial European Union (EU) membership referendum to be held on June 23. Asked at a press conference on how a Brexit outcome in the referendum could affect India-U.K. ties, Union Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj steered clear of a political comment.

It might partially be due to the centralization of Family Welfare Programmes implementation and Meitei are more aware the benefits of small family norms towards quality of life. On the other site of the coin, other communities perhaps deliberately exaggerate their population through craft-resist domination. Apart from population, the health of mothers and children of the community with high fertility rate would not be healthy rather prone to have many undesirable health hazards.
