Chitra Ahanthem
The rains it seems are good only in films. The languorous pitter-patter of rains over the past week in Imphal has led to the inundation of small lanes and many roads across town. On a happier note, the rains have not spared anyone but merrily mired people in slush and mud, regardless of social hierarchies and flooding embankments and residential areas and office complexes. Whoever thought rain could turn out to be a great social leveler? The rich and the powerful with all their might and the grandeur of their homes have to face the ignominy of having their homes encroached upon by water from nearby drains that in turn have become mere slivers of water being clogged with plastic and other rubbish. Drains have more or less disappeared from sight over the years following the concrete jungle fixation, the greed for more land and the presence of the evil plastic bags that everyone seems to love throwing everywhere.
And while nothing about floods can be romantic, the current situation of flash floods arising out of water deluge following brief showers brings back the memories of excitement associated with floods, and a big one at that. The 1989 floods happened sometime in summer, which makes that spectacle more than two decades old. We were in school then, a period that was yet to be marked by internet or mobile phones or even cable TV. Doordarshan and All India Radio were the only means of entertainment and news but our own inherent tendency for kumhei meant that people would go out in droves and move about town taking stock of how the flood was advancing. They called it “eeshing chaoba yengba”  and it was more or less effective in warning people about when to pack things in the house and get ready for the flooding. Sometimes, people would set up their fishing nets in places where there was flooding and come back boasting about their catch. In most cases, it was the news that came from this ventures that would warn people much before the local news on AIR!

Looking at it now, it is rather strange that before my own experience of the 1989 floods, we had only the hearsay of our own parents of their flood experiences during their own childhood. This gave it the rose tinted outlook: floods sounded like so much fun! That would be an understatement in more ways than one. For starters, my father ended up joining his friends for a “eeshing chaoba yengba chatba” expedition and it was while he was away that the floods decided to come calling! As my younger siblings slept through the night, I was slogging with my mother: we had to pack books and clothes and keep them on higher locations inside the house. We had to wedge in bricks under the hen-coop and repeat the same exercise for the small thatched granary that we had at home. Father came in home after we had done the first stocktaking and calmly said, “the floods have come.” It was as if we still had that fact to be pointed out to us when we had been already been scrambling about with water swirling around our ankles in the house!

But that frantic rush as it turned out later, was not enough. My treasured comic collection was sogged and so was a large part of the granary. My younger brother who had been besotted by two small ducklings and had them in a small cage was heart broken to find later that the waters carried away the ducks: cage and all! Much later after the water receded, the paddy that got wet developed white moulds but the price of rice had gone up after the floods. So we ended up eating pungent smelling rice for a long time and I pestered my parents asking whether our paddy had turned to the huikap breed (it is said that huikap is so called because the taste is so vile as to make even dogs cry!) because of the floods. This would come later but after the scrambling, there was the element of fun that started out with the first morning after the floods came: the sight of an uncle and a cousin rowing on a raft made of the trunk of banana plants. Of course, the lanes in our locality will no longer fit such a contraption now but back then lanes within Leikais were broad and people asked about the welfare of their neighbours. Uncle was telling us that people had started packing their belongings and taking shelter in his building and other tall structures. He sent in a rickshaw to ferry my siblings and myself and we spent 3-4 days with our extended family in their building, a tall one that was still being constructed.
The most vivid memory of that time is the picture of all of us surrounding grand-father as he would tune into the local news on AIR and hearing about when the flood level would go down. There was great excitement and chaos when some snakes came out crawling and the usual circus following naughty children trying out water adventures: the later got taken care of through some trashing! But the fun times did not last long: we had two doctors in the family and they promptly vaccinated all of us children so we did not get any funny infections (am not sure what those injections were about still). Then my maternal grand mother came to fetch us to her home at Kakwa, which was not touched by the flood. I stayed with her for 2 weeks till it was announced that schools would be open once again. That brought the end of all excitement but the after effects of the flood was still around when we got back. We came home to the sight of our mother scrubbing the mud off the hens!
End-point:
That was then and much has changed. While there are many places around Imphal and its outskirts that stay under flood for a day and more, thankfully they do not remain submerged for days on end. Having said that though, it would be disastrous to remain complacent about floods. The sight of nude electric power lines and cables hanging oh so near above the water surface on the Nambul river is enough to give me ulcers. The flash floods that happen after every brief downpour also continues to be an eye-sore and speaks volumes of how we are not taking care of waste disposals and drainage and sewerage around our houses. Most houses have got added height in their ground floor structures following ground leveling but if each of us can care enough to also think of what lies beyond our own homes, then we could actually get down to living without the slush and the mud. So long as drains remain clogged with plastic or worse, get to vanishing point, the sight of concrete surrounded by slush will remain.

IMPHAL July 15: Union minister of social justice and empowerment Mukul Wasnik emphasised the need to create more awareness about the various central schemes related to drug abuse and rehabilitation, welfare for senior citizens and persons with disabilities being implemented in the state.

Talking to media persons on the sideline of a review meeting held at Classic Hotel today, the union minister stated that the number of initiatives which the state have taken up in this regard were reviewed .

“We still have to do much more. There is the need to have more capacity building programs, workshops and training for various officers. The weak spots have been identified and steps will be taken to redress these issues”, he said.

The minister also stressed on the need to make available disability certificates to beneficiaries in a more simplified and decentralized manner so that the disabled persons can get the certificates easily without waiting for long periods.

He further stated that the commissioner of the state social welfare department has been intimated to interact with her counterparts in the health department and moreover with the National Institute of Orthopedically Handicapped (NIOH) centre at Kolkotta to revise the resources available there.

The union minister along with his secretary had an interactive review session with officials of the social welfare department and inquired about the number of pending cases, enquiries from the disabled persons to the commission and the number of cases that have been redressed so far, and whether the cases have been taken up in a systematic manner.

Replying to the queries, director social welfare G Satyabati at first replied that there has been a lone complaint to the commission by a disabled person pertaining to promotion norms and a show cause notice has been sent to the authorities concerned as remedial action.

The status of the disabled beneficiaries on scholarship and financial assistance was also deliberated. It was learnt that there are about 13,470 persons living with disabilities in the state and amongst them 387 have been given financial assistance under different schemes while another 3000 persons have been given economic assistance through scholarships.

Surprisingly, the director could not answer by herself when questioned on what amount is provided to a disabled person in a month as per the benefit scheme.

All in all, the visiting team contended that the state authorities need to invoke the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 effectively and the commission should be more competent and assertive in addressing the needs of the disabled.

After the conclusion of the review meeting in the evening, the union minister later met MPCC president Gaikhangam at Congress Bhawan.

Wasnik also had a brief interaction with the media. At the meet, he said that his visit was a routine one to review the implementation of central schemes and to bridge the gaps if there are any, and further that the relevant issues can be addressed and the central welfare programs can be implemented effectively.

Answering to queries from media regarding the effectiveness of the PWD Act, 1995, he said that in order to make the Act more disabled friendly, steps have been initiated so that the Act can comply to the norms laid down by the United Nations Convention of the Rights of People with Disabilities. In this regard, a committee has also been set up and the reports and recommendations of the committee will be sent to the instituted central coordinating committee as well as the Union ministry to take the final decision.

Wasnik is scheduled to meet the Chief Minister tonight and will leave Imphal tomorrow after visiting the state run blind school and the deaf and mute school.

20th North American Manipur Association (NAMA) Convention New Jersey, USA July 2-3, 2011

The 20th Annual Convention of North American Manipur Association (NAMA) was held during the 4th of July weekend at New Jersey, USA. It was an enjoyable event with good number of participants from North America. The majority of the participants were from several states which include Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

NAMA members residing at New Jersey & New York hosted the convention with great enthusiasm and dedication. It was a team effort – each member family contributing their commendable time and effort for the successful conduct of the convention. It will be difficult to single out a particular family but we would like to recognize the families of Sushil Laishram, Rajeshwar Laishram to make 20th NAMA Convention an enjoyable experience. We are very thankful to all the participant NAMA members for making the 20th NAMA Convention a grand success.

This year we had many new members from several states attending the convention for the first time. Their participation is encouraging and a great pleasure for the NAMA Executive Team and its members. We seek all the people from Manipur and Manipur origin to join NAMA as members so that we can celebrate and enjoy our culture and heritage. At the same time we can share valuable thoughts & ideas to serve our community here and abroad.

We also missed several NAMA members who could not make to the convention because of their schedule conflicts. We look forward to see everyone again in next year’s convention during the July 4 weekend 2012.

The first day of Convention (July 2, 2011) was a reception party at Knights of Columbus, Edison, NJ; members greeting each other and knowing several new members and the first time attendees. There was plenty of good food and different kinds of drinks.  Participant members introduced themselves and expressed their happiness to be able to attend and pleasure to know other members. There was a housie game. All the members participated in the game and everyone enjoyed it through. Of course, there were lucky winners who had cash prizes of considerable amount. Kids were having a good time playing together as well. Moreover, the participants fully enjoyed the traditional food prepared by local NAMA members. Indeed, it was really an enjoyable and memorable evening.

The next day on July 3rd, we had our main Convention event at the Royal Albert’s Palace, Fords/Edison, New Jersey, USA. We are fortunate to have Doug Welkins from Pennsylvania for accepting to be the chief guest of the main convention day. Doug could speak Manipuri language well since he had been with Manipur people in many different parts of the world including India and Dubai. After the Chief Guest, NAMA President, NAMA Gen. Secretary,   took its respective chairs at the podium, Lukhoi Shougaijam (Gen Secretary) gave the welcome address. Followed by several other speakers:

All the speakers presented their thoughts & ideas very well. Everyone in the audience was benefitted from their thoughtful presentations. We thank you for it. Especially we appreciate Mrs. Monica Kharkar and her family to join the NAMA convention and share such valuable and important information with regard to CRY projects in India and with specific to CRY projects in Manipur. We encourage everyone to be part of it and participate in its activities for Child rights and other humanitarian cause.

This year’s NAMA Convention was a great success with the active participation from a sizable number of member participants. Several of our members also took the advantage of visiting several tourist sites at and around New Jersey/New York. Every year, we try to select a venue that can combine NAMA convention with Summer Vacation for our families and members. We are thankful to all the NAMA members who attended the convention. We hope to see more members once again at the 21st Annual NAMA Convention 2012 during the 4th of July weekend, 2012.

Cinema goers inquiring about the ticket price from the black marketeers during the first day showing of the Hollywood flick, Fast & Furious after the decade long lull at the Usha cinema hall in the heart of Imphal.

IMPHAL June 24: After more than a decade, an English action film “Fast and Furious-5” was screened today at the Usha cinema hall located at Paona Bazar amidst loud cheers and frantic rush to get tickets, young crowd thronged and filled the 900 seater cinema house to finally enjoy a Hollywood blockbuster on the big screen after the long lull.

On the opening day of the film today the box office recorded three sold out shows.

“The turn out of the audience was beyond our expectations, we have heard the clamour of the public yearnings to see English movies at the theatres and finally decided to take a trial and screened this Hollywood film. It’s been a long, long time since we saw such a packed audience”, said a beaming Syamsunder, manager of USHA cinema hall to IFP.

He further stated that the last English film screened at the theatre was “Star Wars” way back in 1999.

“After the ban of Hindi films by insurgents, the English movies also died out as modern Manipuri digital films edged in to fill the gap and have been totally dominating the industry ever since, a Manipuri digital film was screened in our hall till yesterday, we will see the developments and further try to upgrade our sound system to a more state of the art device to cater to the upbeat crowd, hopefully if the turn out of the fans continue like today”, he said.

A movie goer Kumar candidly said “ Today’s audience is something we have never witnessed before, the crowd consisted of ladies and family members mostly till yesterday, now it’s the young ones, the ‘Yo’ crowd today”, he said. He ushered this reporter inside the hall to point out some fans sitting at the passageway. “It’s a packed crowd, they insisted that I let them in”, he added.

Ibemhal, a woman selling tickets (locally known as ‘Kala Bazar’) said that they had a field day in selling their tickets. “Normally for Manipuri films, we get an average of Rs 50 profit per show from selling tickets and most of the time we have tickets left over. Today we sold out early and got more profits”, she added happily.

Talking to some youngsters, they unanimously voiced satisfaction after watching the action packed film.

Jimmy, a Hollywood movie buff cheerfully said, “Now, my yearning to watch the top blockbusters on the big screen is finally fulfilled, Manipuri films have become sort of mundane and the plots are mostly similar besides it’s no fun to watch the Hollywood movies in DVD’s all the time by yourself, the thrill or ambience of a movie theatre is different”, he said.

The Hall has the largest capacity of 900 seats among the three surviving theatres in the heart of the city namely Friends Talkies and Pratap Talkies. It conducts three shows daily beginning from 11 am, 2 pm and 4.45 pm. The tickets costs Rs 15, 20 and 25 for front, rear and balcony seats.

The other prominent theatres Mini Friends, Victory, Shankar Talkies, Mini Shankar, Asha and Jina hall, Imphal Talkies have become shopping centers and educational institutes following the ban imposed on Hindi films by a militant group since 1999.

USHA Theatre targets the global release of the latest from the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallow part 2” as it’s next release.

North East Centre for Environmental Education and Research, Imphal

Every year colleges in different Universities across the country are increasing their cut off marks for admission to under graduate courses. Students of states like ours are facing difficulty in getting admissions in good colleges like St. Stephen College, Sri Ram College of Commerce due to low aggregate in their marks in Board Exams. Only a few get admissions in reputed colleges and the remaining had to settle for correspondence courses or had to go for some certificate or diploma courses.

Students of our state are very good in studies, extra –curricular activities and are well aware of the happening across the country or globe. In spite of all the turmoil in the state as the result of the prevailing situation in the state, students are still not losing their hope to achieve their dreams. We need to give them support, encouragements, appreciation and proper guidance. Not only these, our teachers and education system should change their approach in giving marks or grading system. Our students are second to none but are still facing problems in getting admission after XIIth. Manipur Education Board and Council should encourage teachers to give marks according to what the students deserves. Every year thousands of Manipuri students couldn’t get admission due to low grade in Board/Council Exams. However, the situation is different for students studying in other boards like CBSE, ICSE.  Does it mean that students studying in CBSE, ICSE are better than students of Manipur Board/Council? Take example of Manipuri students (not only Manipuri students) studying in Assam Valley School (CBSE) in Assam get admission in colleges easily as compare to students studying in schools of Manipur Board. The only difference is marks/percentage.

Every year Manipuri students topped in colleges and university somewhere or the other across the country. We have several Gold medallists and toppers in every field of sciences, arts, engineering, medical and commerce. However, the number could be increased if all the talented students get proper education and this can be achieved if they get admission in good colleges and universities. Manipur Government/Education Departments should hold regular meetings and interaction programmes with teachers, officials of Board/Council and principals to address the situation and problems faced by the students of the state in getting admission for higher education.

Encourage students to pursue higher education for better Manipur. Education will bring peace and development to the state.

Present state of Shamu Makhong Manipur

By:  Sanatombi Angomcha

Granny had this tiny ‘pokfam’ right beside the ever famous landmark in Kwairambandh Keithel- ‘shamu makhong’. She used to sell mangal, chana, heingaan ladoo, heimaang matum etc. Visiting kwairambandh keithel as a child was such an exciting experience especially with this very anticipation of having ‘mayoms’ of mangal or chana and my favourite hei-ngaan-ladoo often offered by ‘Keisampatki Abok’(my granny).
The nearer I would follow ‘Mumma’ towards the ‘Shamu Makhong’ to visit her, the thuds in my heart would continuously grow with exhilaration. She sometimes used to give me pocket money. Though Mumma used to forbid her from giving that pocket money, for me it meant everything (when I say everything I mean everything). The crowd at the Shamu Makhong used to excite me further. The ‘kwa mana’ selling non-Manipuris, the various wholesale shops of various snacks, granny’s fellow pokfam fambi eney, endon and abok-like ladies- these are some vivid memories I can recall about the surroundings at ‘Shamu Makhong’, Sometimes, it would be yet another experience taking a close look of the ‘unattended statue of Shriyuut Bhagyachandra’ and his sorry Shamu and of course the pasted posters on it. Though elders used to tell tales about how that great king caught that elephant right at that spot and in honour of his bravery how the statue was created there, I was least interested to find out the historical connotations. For me, that was one favourite spot for me in the entire Kwairambandh Keithel because that’s the very landmark beside which my skinny-granny had her ‘pokfam’.
Last time, when I visited home and went to Kwairambandh keithel, a nostalgic feeling engulfed me. I saw the fly-over, saw the renovated shamu-makhong, Shriyuut Bhagyachandra was infact wearing a new paint, and his shamu was also repaired. But I felt no envy or happiness to see the ‘changed Shamu Makhong’, I was sadder not to see my granny or her fellow Pokfam fambis around.  I am not sure about others but for me this crumbling memory of ‘Shamu Makhong’ will forever and ever stay in my heart.
