News & views of the week-indigestion at its peak!

It was a wasted week with an upset stomach and there were a lot of mouth watering news items served day after day to ridicule an appetite that had gone to its mapaam. The super duper vigilance of the cyber crime cell, the consideration of the ruling party to shift army camps from Manipur University campus and Koirengei, the sudden opening of Pandora’s Box on the Manipur Development Society scam etc. are a few news items worth mentioning. Manipur Masala presents its own indigestive perspective(s) on these eye-catching news items.

71 years of Nation’s independence vs 37 years of AFSPA in Manipur

71 years ago, at the stroke of midnight on 15th August of 1947, India finally lost its colonial shackles. A fruition of a long struggle with countless lives martyred, British colonialism in India came to an end and it was the beginning of an independent journey for India but of course with many challenges ahead-challenges which were too many like the multiple heads of Ravana from the Ramayana, one of the mythological stories of the Hindu. Manipur Masala, through this space, attempts to compare and contrast the nation’s71 year old journey of independence with Manipur’s 37 years of struggle to combat with a draconian Act like the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.

Cows’ rights vs women & children’s rights in India

A Joint Action Committee against Denial of Rights to Other Animals (Manipur wing) was recently formed under the leadership of Pigchandra, a renowned activist who fights for the cause of pigs. He pleaded “Pigs should also be protected under a strict legislation. Pork and beef are equally consumed by Indians but it is a discriminatory act of the government to only consider about the safety of etao cow. Beef and pork have greater consumption percentage in the Northeastern region. If so, why can’t they protect us with an appropriate legislation? “

Monsters, Monsters, Everywhere but Sssshhhh

“If we are to fight discrimination and injustice against women we must start from the home for if a woman cannot be safe in her own house then she cannot be expected to feel safe anywhere”-Aysha Taryam
Instigating talks on discrimination and injustice meted out to women is nothing new in a society like ours which is still caught up in the phanek-khudei politics. Nupadi nupani nupina nupadouna touba yaapote, nupanabu kappa hounade, nupadi khongbaan chonglaga paap loina kok ee, nupadi chaamagi mapuni etc etc.–can one ever imagine how many ironies are embedded with these gender biased notions which are passed on from one generation to the other? Let me provide a brief explanation about the hidden ironies of these male-powering notions.

Why legal literacy is the need of the hour?

In a society like ours where various forms of crime keep on rising like esing echao, mob-justice is considered the speediest form of judgement to punish a culprit or a suspected culprit. It would be quite a paradox to initiate a talk on ‘equal justice and free legal aid’ and how citizens in India, irrespective of caste, creed, sex or religion can avail of this particular provision which is laid down in Article 39A of the constitution of India.

Of holy cows & yummy momos : How the Nation loves idiotic news & views!

Shudh Shahakari ji one of the Gai Rakshaks almost yelled on the microphone during his uninspiring speech on Cows’ Rights- “In this holy country of rapists and criminals, cows are not safe anywhere. Non vegetarians are after these innocent cows. When you visit the streets at Jama Masjid in Old Delhi or Batla house in New Delhi, you will come across those gluttons who gorge on tandoori beef as if they have been bhukha pyasa for many days. The sacrifice of innocent cows just to satiate the appetite of these gluttons is not worth at all. We need more Gai Rakshaks from different parts of the nation who would work for the promotion and protection of Cows’ Rights. Remember cows are our mothers. We need to stand up and fight for the right of our mataji.” The audio-visual byte of Shudh Shahakari ji was live on Bakwaas News Channel for the next 48 hours. It outraged the sentiment of vegetarians across the nation. They have expressed their angst on social media through tweets and Facebook updates with various hash tags which include #CowBachao #CowMatKhao #GaiMatakiJaiHo.

On the fiasco of unfair practices used in exams

Note touba or khongbaan chenba are not unfamiliar terms to any (lairik paaningdaba) Manipuri student who has studied in any of the schools or colleges in Manipur. A major threat to quality education from a larger perspective, the practice of using unfair means during exam keeps on looming around for all these decades. In today’s technologically empowered world it is quite a matter of shame that students still indulge in such a practice. There is no short cut to success, passing exams through unfair means is not something to be proud of-but only if they understand it!

Swift justice always sounds like an oxymoron in a judicial system like ours which is comparable to a thengoo lamjel. Justice is always delayed for reasons best known to those who belong to the judicial fraternity. The trial for the infamous Phaknung gang rape incident of 14th April finally began on 28th April which was right after two weeks. But as predictable it will perhaps go on for another two-three weeks/months/years or even more.

The longest ever imposed economic blockade in Manipur by United Naga Council finally came to an end. Erasing all the bitter memories of the blockade, the only lesson we have learned from the recent blockade is that whenever there is a blockade in Manipur by any XYZ organization, go to any other town to resolve the issue. Yes! Never ever consider/think about discussing the issue in Imphal.

The triumph of Thambaal & of promises yet to fulfill

Thambaal finally blossomed in Manipur after 15 years of Khubaak’s regime. Thambaal lovers celebrated Yaoshang 2017 with great pomp and show. Khubaak and its supporters hibernated for a while and did not take part in any type of Yaoshangtastic celebration. It was quite a funny scenario at some of the leikai lampaks where thambaal supporters flaunted their victorious attitude as if they are the ones who have been elected.

On the need for a strict Legislation to end bandh/blockade culture

Any form of bandh/blockade is a stigma on the effectiveness of local governance structures and is unconstitutional. Bandh/blockade adversely affects every aspect of normal life of the people. It is quite a shame to admit that Manipur tops the chart among other Indian states in terms of bandh/blockade culture. But majority of the people do not want to discuss in length about bringing any solution to any form of bandh/blockade in Manipur. CSOs and political parties by now want to stay away from this issue while common people are clueless about why the blockade is never coming to an end. It is like watching a boring movie at a theatre where the exit doors are locked from outside. One is at his/her wit’s end but is equally helpless since there is no alternative means to leave the theatre.

Amusing gimmicks of Manipur election 2017

Gimmicks of Manipur General Election 2017 already began. Two major political parties under the leadership of Khubaakchao and Thambaljao have so far come up with their list of contending candidates for the upcoming election in Manipur. It may also be noted that Thambaljao’s former right hand is now Khubakchao’s right hand and vice versa.

On the completion of three months of economic blockade

United Naga Council deserves three rounds of cheers as the ongoing economic blockade has almost completed three months. Imagine three months of economic blockade by a civil society organization like UNC in a state like Manipur which is already downtrodden with various other issues. Imagine a gross violation of human rights (of lakhs of people) incessantly going on without any timely intervention by any competent authority. Imagine the hoi polloi silently suffering for all these months without any clue why they are suffering. It seems majority of the people in Manipur are currently drugged which is why they happily succumb to the situation. Or are they under a false hope that the ‘sarkaar’ will do something soon and that normal days will be back again?
