Newmai News NetworkIMPHAL, April 16: Five Tangkhul village heads and a civil organization have joined force in condemning the assassination attempt yesterday on MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing and have conveyed condolences to the families of seven deceased, including a civilian, while also wishing speedy recovery to about five other security personnel still in critical condition from the injury in the ambush. “We strongly condemn the act of ambush on Wungnaoshang Keishing by unidentified gunmen”, said a joint statement issued by Lovingson Jajo, chairman, Thoyee village, MH Wungreishung, headman, Riha village, Kapangmi Jajo, chairman, Riha village, Z Shimdhar, headman, Ramrei village, Yaomi Kasar, headman, Chadong village. The joint statement shared the grief and pain of the deceased families while also expressing “shock” on the “unwanted incident” and has strongly appealed to any armed group not to repeat such an “ugly” incident in the area. It has demanded adequate compensation for the deceased families and the injured from the State government.Similarly, Centre for Organization Research and Education (CORE) has expressed its deepest agony upon receiving information that Wungnaoshang Keishing and his security escort team have come under armed ambush from unidentified gunmen. “The reported ambush was clearly an attempt to assassinate Mr Keishing,” said a statement from CORE. It is a matter of great fortune that the MLA himself survived the deadly ambush. However, the dead of six security staffs and two civilians and the injury of four security staffs and one civilian is a deeply lamentable matter, it said.Adding that the beleaguered MLA has been in a vulnerable position lately for spearheading the demand for the carving out of full-fledged Phungyar district from the present Ukhrul district of Manipur, it said, “under the vitiated circumstance the attempt to assassinate Mr Keishing leaves many questions unanswered.” Urging that the government of Manipur must institute a judicial inquiry under a sitting high court judge of CBI inquiry into the ambush, CORE said that the government must adequately compensate the deceased families and the injured persons. It has also conveyed its deepest condolences to the surviving families and wishes a speedy recovery to those who are injured. Significantly, Wungnaoshang Keishing has been aggressively pushing the agenda for the creation of full-fledged Phungyar district by bifurcating the present Ukhrul district. Recently, He drew flaks from Naga apex body United Naga Council (UNC) for attempting to “derail” the demand for “Alternative Arrangement” for Nagas in Manipur. The MLA was asked to revoke the resolution for the demand of the district which he had apparently submitted to the government of the State but he steadfastly stood his ground saying that he was only obliging the wishes of the people who have been victims of uneven development in the district. Interestingly, Wungnaoshang Keishing ran for the last MLA election with the backing and patronage of United Naga Council (UNC).

IMPHAL April 24: The RPF in a press statement signed by its publicity secretary T Leishemba has rubbished the statementsmade by the Chief Minister O Ibobi during the Khongjom day observation.
The release stated that the comments made by the CM in regard to attainment of independence and sovereignty are fictional and made to mislead the general public.
Referring to historical events, the RPF stated that Manipur was a princely state but was forcibly annexed on October 1949 as Budhachandra was made to sign the Shillong Accord. At that time there was neither constitution nor governance in India, but a form of government was already there in Manipur and the king had handed over the power to the public thus, the Manipur Merger Agreement is illegal and none can claim otherwise.
The CM needs to under stand certain things first that the size and population of a nation is immaterial in demanding independence, but depends on the wishes of the populace. If the public of Manipur wants to be independent then no force on Earth can stop it, the defeat of the USA at the hands of Cuba and Vietnam are ample proof, it states.
The state has a history of 200 years of independence and the baseless statements of the CM will have scant effect. It is understood that the CM to retain his power has to speak something, but words ridiculing the sentiments of the public should not be made, the release stated.
Further, the CM is working in the interest of India and not a real government with the aim for the betterment of the public. The RPF only wants an independent nation under a democratic rule by its own people, the release concluded.

IMPHAL May 10: The apex scribe body of the state, the All Manipur Working Journalist’s Union (AMWJU) has decided to boycott all news relating to the two day state visit of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram. The resolve was taken this evening at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul in an emergency meeting presided by AMWJU president, editors and senior correspondents.A press release by AMWJU general secretary stated that the journalist awaited the arrival of Chidambaram at Tulihal Airport today afternoon. The media persons wanted a vantage point to take photographs and for news coverage, which was denied by the police personnel at first, as the SDPO stationed at the airport was approached by the media for requesting permission from the concerned police superintendent, the SDPO told that he was acting under orders from the SP himself and repeatedly asked the media to leave the vantage point. Obliging the police personnel, the journalist also left and tried to cover the news from another spot, which proved impossible. Following the circumstances, the reporters left the airport. The conduct of the officials of the home department was discussed at length at the scribes meeting today and further decried the high handedness of the police personnel. It was resolved that such unbecoming conduct of the personnel of the home department clearly indicates that there is no need for the media to cover the news of Chidambaram’s visit. The scribes also condemned that such an important visit of Chidambaram, obviously related with the law and order situation was denied news coverage, and the meet resolved not to carry the news about the home minister’s visit.
