IMPHAL, April 10: The MPP as per resolve of a high level party meeting deliberated on the issue of the ongoing peace talks between the NSCN (IM) and the Centre yesterday.

After the meet, the political party resolved that the creation of an autonomous council of the Nagas with maximum administrative and financial control according to media reports was viewed with grave apprehension and as a threat to the territorial integrity of the state.

The meeting had further resolved to oppose the reported proposal of the Union government for the creation of an autonomous council of the Nagas under one administrative head and further to urge the government not to include any agenda which may affect the territorial boundaries of the state in the ongoing Indo Naga peace talks.

MPP cries foul over Congress win

IMPHAL, April 10: Nimaichand Luwang, president of the Manipur People’s Party charged that the Congress… more »

IMPHAL, April 10: Nimaichand Luwang, president of the Manipur People’s Party charged that the Congress party won the recent election with a landslide victory by using money and muscle power.

He further charged that the state officials from top to bottom were in cahoots with the ruling Congress government and such favoritism was one of the main factors for the MPP’s downfall and the Congress’s victory.

Breifing media during a press meet held at the party’s office near pologround today, Nimaichand stated that amongst the various reasons of the regional political party’s failure to deliver in the recent assembly election, one is the MLAs who won seats were not content with the financial status of the party but were rather inclined towards the Congress who had the capability to ‘donate’ huge amounts for each Congress candidate.

“The MLAs were rather inclined to be with the party with deep pockets”, he maintained.

He further charged that some of those who were elected as MPP MLAs in the previous election were too money minded and failed to stick to the true ethos of the regional party and neither were they working for the development of the party.

“The MLAs of the MPP did not take the role of being true opposition members seriously, they were looking forward to joining the fold of the Congress”, Nimaichand alleged.

It may be mentioned that RK Anand of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa and Ng Bijoy of Khurai a/c erstwhile MPP MLAs had defected to the Congress party just before the last election.

Nimaichand further charged that many Congress candidates spent in the tune of crores in violation of the ECI norms.

“We know that amounts upto 10 crores were utilized by Congress candidates in the last elections. The whole election was a debacle and it is clear that the Congress does not have the mandate of the people, but votes have been bought”, he alleged that there were much unaccounted expenditures and the ECI have failed in all counts to take cognizance of the fact.

Mentioning that the police forces, Manipur Rifles including other military forces were in hands with the Congress to further their ends, he charged that families of voters were bribed in the tune of Rs 10,000 for each family.

The ex MLA contended that the upcoming Lok Sabha election will be a straight fight and the MPP joining hands with their allies is confident of winning the election and defeating the Congress”.

Senior advocate points out inadequacy in state judiciary

IMPHAL, April 10: The strength of judges in the High Court and Subordinate Courts in… more »

IMPHAL, April 10: The strength of judges in the High Court and Subordinate Courts in Manipur has remained stagnant for the last more than 30 years which has made the public litigants reluctant with the state judiciary, stated a senior advocate of the state during a recent function.

Addressing the recently held inauguration ceremony of the functioning of the Imphal Bench of Guahati High Gourt from the new HC complex, N Kumarjit a senior advocate and president of the High Court Bar Association, Manipur had placed several issues faced by the judicial in the state.

Justice Altamas Kabir of the Supreme Court of India had inaugurated the functioning of Imphal Bench of Gauhati High Court of the newly constructed High Court Complex at Chingmeirong.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and other judges of the Supreme Court of India including Justice AK Patnaik, Justice Gyan Sudha Misra and Justice Jasti Chelameswar were also present at the inauguration.

He further expressed that with only 32 posts in the subordinate judiciary including three administrative posts-Registrar (Judl) and member secretary Legal Service authority, the strength of judges in the High Court and Subordinate courts in the state is very low and inadequate.

There are only 29 courts including two District and Sessions, two Additional District and Sessions, one Tribunal (MACT/Revenue/others), twelve CJMs/ Civil Judge Senior Divisions, nine JMICs/ Civil Judge (Junior Division) and one JMIC (Transport), Kumarjit had said.

He said there are no separate court for CBI/NIA/Electricity and others in Manipur and there are also vacancies at every level and because of these a civil/criminal trial takes more than 20 years in getting disposal owing to which has only made the public litigants reluctant of the judiciary.

The state of Manipur at present needs one district and sessions Court with Additional District and Sessions, and one Civil judge senior Division for each district besides one CJM in the district, Kumarjit said and further added that there should be one JMIC / Civil Judge Junior Division for each sub-divisional area and five more such courts in the capital city Imphal municipal area where 80 per cent of the total population of Manipur is inhabiting.

He had also said that separate courts for CBI /NI*A five MAC Tribunals, four more family courts, four more courts under NDPS Act are required to be established in the state.

It is a fact that the strength of judges population ratio recommended by the Law commission and direction to all authorities to increase judge strength five-fold by the Supreme Court of India in All India Judges Association case (2004) 4 SCC 247 within five years at Para 25 of the Judgement dated March 21, 2003 has not been made known or taken care of by the Law department, government of Manipur, he had stated during his address.

The present strength of judges in the state remains stagnant for the last 30 years, but the population of Manipur and number of litigation have been increasing in multiples and multiples which have resulted in the high increase of pendency of cases in the Subordinate Judiciary, Kumarjit further said, adding that it is expected that authorities concerned shall make all efforts to increase the strength of judicial officers in the state.

He went on saying that for effective administration of justice the Law department is also required to be named by members of judicial service in all grades as done in almost all the other states of India.

It is also worth to mention that to have a separate High Court for Manipur is the long pending demand of the Bar and that there should have been a High Court when Manipur attained statehood on January 21, 1972 enshrined under Article 214 of The Constitution of India, Kumarjit further said.

He also said the Bar be permitted to make a special request to all authorities concerned particularly the state Chief Minister to remind and pressed the Prime Minister to institute a separate High Court for Manipur by passing a Bill in the coming Parliament session.

Who are the CDOs?

Almost everyone in Manipur has seen the police commandos in action both in the valley… more »

Almost everyone in Manipur has seen the police commandos in action both in the valley and the hills. But do they really exist? Officially, there are no such special units in the organizational hierarchy of the Manipur police organization. One will not find the existence of such a unit among the various branches of the state police organization. According to the official website of Manipur Police, the branches are Civil Police, Armed Police (MR & IRB), Criminal Intelligence Department (CID), Traffic Police, Narcotics & Affairs of Border (NAB), DG Control Room, Manipur Police Wireless, Manipur Police Training School (MPTS), Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Central Motor Transport Workshop (CMTW) and Home Guard. Yet, their existence is acknowledged in official reports, vehicular emblems, insignia on caps and uniforms and badges. This question was raised in the recent memorandum submitted by the Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights, Manipur (CSCHR) to the UN Special Rapporteur for extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions Christof Heyns. And it has become more pertinent, in the wake of state Home Minister Gaikhangam’s statement to the media that he will be reviewing the functioning of the so-called police commandos or CDOs. It is a bold statement; in fact no one in government had said that before. So, it has become necessary to place the facts on the table. First, what is supposed to be a commando? And what does it mean in history? During the World War II, the British had raised elite forces known as commandos for covert strikes upon the enemy. The British intended that their commandos be small, highly mobile surprise raiding and reconnaissance forces. They intended them to carry all they needed and not remain in field operations for more than 36 hours. Army Commandos were all volunteers selected from existing soldiers still in Britain. During the war the British Army Commandos spawned several other famous British units such as the Special Air Service, the Special Boat Service and the Parachute Regiment. The British Army Commandos themselves were never regimented and were disbanded at the end of the war. In India, the term commando is used liberally for almost any unit that has more training than their peers. This is especially true in the police forces. However, there are certain units that are trained to internationally acceptable standards. Mention may be made of the Para Commandos; a special forces unit of the Indian Army; the Garud Commando Force, a special unit of the Indian Air Force; MARCOS, a commando unit of the Indian Navy designed to carry out operation on air, sea and land; National Security Guards (NSG) personnel are popularly known as Black Cat Commandos which also carries out hostage rescue and anti-terrorist operations; the Special Protection Group (SPG) which provides protection to the political elite of the nation; Ghatak Force, a battalion-level special unit in the Indian Army; and the COBRA unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) utilized mostly in Naxalite areas. Among the states, Punjab has a commando battalion. Commandos in Punjab Police came into existence in the year 1989. The idea was to establish a better trained better equipped and specialised force to combat terrorism in the State. The 33rd battalion of PAP was renamed as PAP Commando battalion in the year of 1989 and then declared as first commando battalion in 1990. In Manipur, there is no commando battalion as such, although establishment of a commando battalion is doing the rounds in recent times. Yet, there are police commando units in all the district headquarters of the valley and they are handling the operational part. One need not elaborate on the activities of the police commandos in Manipur, everyone has a story. They are, in fact, the champions of fake encounters and ‘official extortion’. There have been instances of rebellion among the commando ranks over intended government action for excesses and times when they had held the government at ransom by putting down arms. This is simply indiscipline on their part and on the other hand the reflection of the political masters at the mercy of the police commandos who hold the key. This is an extremely dangerous situation, which the new Home Minister needs to take into account while considering police reforms. Nobody takes heed of the Supreme Court directives issued in 2006 in reference to the Prakash Singh v Union of India case. The directives seek to address the issue of politicisation of the police by regulating transfers, postings, and promotions; enhance its accountability through independent bodies; and strengthen its professionalism through regular performance appraisals.

Learning to know, to live together, to do and to be!

By:  G. S. Oinam Progress is impossible without change, and those who can’t change their… more »

By:  G. S. Oinam
Progress is impossible without change, and those who can’t change their minds can’t change anything. -G. B. Shaw; Peace can not be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” –Einstein.

There are two ways to get everyone to hate you in a complex nuisance society-either do something really wrong, or do something really right; either speak too much truth or too much lie. If you have something to say, please raise your hand, then place it over your mouth and keep it there or you will get nothing if you are weak. You can`t always change someone. Sometimes, you have to either accept who they are, or learn to live without them. Never argue with a fool, people might not be able to tell the difference. It is the eye of ignorance that assigns a fixed and unchangeable colour to every object. Discover the decisive diplomacy unless your truth and honest words does not listen by others. Life is not about the mistakes we’ve made. It’s about the lessons we’ve learned and the friends we’ve gained. The 3Cs of life are choices, chances and changes. You must make a choice to take a chance or your life will never change. If you can`t change it, change your attitude first. If you can`t fly then run, if you can`t run then walk, if you can`t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward. Just living is not enough… one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower. Remember, three things you can`t recover in life-a word after it’s said, time after its gone and trust after it’s lost. Three types of people are those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened.

Holy Shit! The cost of living is going up, and the chance of living is going down. No place to work and no income! There is brutality and there is honesty but there is no such thing as brutal honesty! People tend to make rules for others and exceptions for themselves. What most people want is all of the power but none of the responsibility. There are many people so poor, that the only thing they have is money. Who will care for women and children in such a situation?

Secured your women means secured your children, it means secure your society. A man’s biggest mistake is giving another man an opportunity to make his woman smile. Dear Men! Making your women feel beautiful is a full time job from which you should never want to retire….. Women have no country that is why men are more curious. A jealous man / woman is faithful. If s/he doesn`t get jealous when someone has your attention, it`s because someone else has hers/him. Culture is the habit of being pleased with the best and knowing of a society. We must respect and practice our culture even we are far distance from our family and society so that, we can save our identity. To keep it alive, women must initiate for the preservation, promotion and responsibility of our culture, our tradition, our attires and our practices….

If a woman asks you a question, it`s better to just give her the truth; chances are she`s asking you because she already knows the answer. Men are always trying to lie and women are always trying to find out lies. Perhaps, the reason for why most women wear make-up and most guys lie is just because women fall in love by what they hear about and guys fall in love by what they see. But women do not fear to fight for belief and faith they feel right. A foolish man tells a woman to stop talking, but a wise man tells her that her mouth is extremely beautiful when her lips are closed. Never argue with a woman when she`s tired, or rested. A wise woman does not demand but they think. The only people you need in life are the ones that need you in theirs. Find someone who knows that you`re not perfect, but treats you as if you are. Because perfect guys don`t exist, but there`s always one guy that is perfect for you. Appreciate for what you and your partner have, because nothing is permanent in this world. In just a blink of an eye, everything can be change.

Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing; a confusion of the real with the ideal never goes unpunished. When you marry the right one, you are complete; when you marry the wrong one, you are finished. And when right one catches you with wrong one, you are completely finished. It is call vicious circle of wedding ring and your wife is ring master. Unfortunately, some of us lose our way, due to the everyday demands of life,
work, money, kids, school and other responsibilities that take precedence.

The mundane and the every day rut, stale what once so vital and colourful.

Slowly even the closest of couples can start to be blinded and that light
that used to shine so bright, start to fade….

Description of ideal women is simple “when you’re sad you smile, when you`re happy you laugh and when you`re weak you stay strong…” The best feeling comes when you realize that you`re perfectly happy without the people you thought you needed the most. Life is too awesome to waste your time thinking about someone who doesn`t treat you right. No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind. The world is more beautiful when we have good things in the heart, joy and transparent smile.

Each of us has the power to give life meaning, to make our time and our bodies and our words into instruments of love and hope. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone (including yourself).Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you`ll be able to see farther. A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him/hers.

When someone hurts you or leaves you with any reason, the best revenge is to live better. Being nice to someone you hate doesn`t mean you`re fake. It means you`re mature enough to tolerate your hate towards them. To forget someone, the first thing you have to do is to forgive that person. You can’t forget if you don’t forgive. Relationships end too soon because people stop putting the same effort to keep you as they did to win you. A lot of problems in the world would disappear if we talk to each other instead of about each other. We are forever seeking approval and acceptance in order to determine our status in the social pecking order.

Friendship means understanding, not agreement. It means forgiveness, not forgetting. It means the memories last even if the contact is lost. But if you haven`t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven`t learned anything. In the end, we only regret the chances we didn`t take, relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make. No one will make a lock without a key. Similarly, God won`t give problems without solutions. But the problem is everyday we swim in the ocean of knowledge and still come out completely dry. Most of the people do….

Plant tress if you think in terms of ten years; teach the people, if you think for 100 years. Education provides roadmap to uprising an individual, society, community or whole nation. Although it is important that what the stuff is included in education pack but more important is the method to educate someone. Today a new way of education is not only becoming a strong substitute of traditional learning but gradually replacing it. History of nations describe that human always resist against any change in tradition, then why E-learning is being adopted so rapidly. What is the reason behind this revolution? Human psyche tells that it adopt the things which are nearer to nature. Designing of E-learning is according to human mentality. Getting knowledge was never much easy in the history. Now knowledge is at your door step. Just click and get it.

Investments in education provide a “multiplier effect”, compounding the returns in other sectors; with more education comes increased health, economic growth and food security.

Each extra year of pre-school increases a person’s future productivity by 10-30%.Countries that raise literacy rates by 20-30% have seen increases in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 8-16%. Each 1% increase in the level of women’s education generates 0.3% in additional economic growth. In sub-Saharan Africa, investing in girls’ education has the potential to boost agricultural output by 25%.If all women in sub-Saharan Africa had a secondary education; 1.8 million lives could be saved each year. A farmer with just four years of education is 9% more productive than one with no education. Women’s education is responsible for half of the reduction of child mortality over the past 40 years. On average each additional year of schooling for a country’s population reduces the chances of falling into civil war by 3.6%.People of voting age with a primary education are 1.5 times more likely to support democracy than people with no education. There would be a 12% drop in global poverty if all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills. Wages rise 20% for every year beyond 4th grade that a girl remains in school, reports of UNESCO, United Nations Global Compact and UNIFEM says.

According to UNESCO, the Four Pillars of Education are Learning to know, Learning to do, Learning to live together and Learning to be. These four pillars of education can’t be anchored solely in one phase in a person`s life or in a single place. There is a need to re-think when in people`s lives education should be provided, and the fields that such education should cover. The periods and fields should complement each other and be interrelated in such a way that all people can get the most out of their own specific educational environment all through their lives.

Learning to Know: It implies learning how to learn by developing one`s concentration, memory skills and ability to think. From infancy, young people must learn how to concentrate – on objects and on other people. This process of improving concentration skills can take different forms and can be aided by the many different learning opportunities that arise in the course of people`s lives (games, work experience programmes, travel, practical science activities, etc.). The development of memory skills is an excellent tool for countering the overpowering stream of instant information put out by the media. Thinking is something children learn first from their parents and then from their teachers. The process should encompass both practical problem-solving and abstract thought. Both education and research should therefore combine deductive and inductive reasoning, which are often claimed to be opposing processes. While one form of reasoning may be more appropriate than the other, depending on the subjects being taught, it is generally impossible to pursue a logical train of thought without combining the two. The process of learning to think is a lifelong one and can be enhanced by every kind of human experience. In this respect, as people`s work becomes less routine, they will find that their thinking skills are increasingly being challenged at their place of work.

Learning to do: It is closely associated with the issue of occupational training: how do we adapt education so that it can equip people to do the types of work needed in the future? Here we should draw a distinction between industrial economies, where most people are wage-earners, and other economies where self-employment or casual works are still the norm. “Learning to do” can no longer mean what it did when people were trained to perform a very specific physical task in a manufacturing process. Skill training therefore has to evolve and become more than just a means of imparting the knowledge needed to do a more or less routine job.

The key concept now is one of “personal competence”. This personal competence is assessed by looking at a mix of skills and talents, combining certified skills acquired through technical and vocational training, social behaviour, personal initiative and a willingness to take risks. If we add a demand for personal commitment on the part of employees in their role as change agents, it is clear that this kind of personal competence involves highly subjective innate or acquired qualities, often referred to as “people skills” or “interpersonal skills” by employers, combined with knowledge and other job skills. Of these qualities, communication, team and problem-solving skills are assuming greater importance. Then, the question of innovation arises- How can people be prepared to innovate?

Learning to live together: violence all too often dominates life in the contemporary world, forming a depressing contrast with the hope which some people have been able to place in human progress. Human history has constantly been scarred by conflicts, but the risk is heightened by two new elements. Firstly, there is the extraordinary potential for self- destruction created by humans in the twentieth century. Then, we have the ability of the new media to provide the entire world with information and unverifiable reports on ongoing conflicts. Public opinion becomes a helpless observer or even a hostage of those who initiate or keep up the conflicts. Until now education has been unable to do much to mitigate this situation. Can we do better? Can we educate ourselves to avoid conflict or peacefully resolve it?

Some subjects lend themselves to discover other people are – human geography in basic education, foreign languages and literature later on. For example, teaching youngsters to look at the world through the eyes of other ethnic or religious groups is a way of avoiding some of the misunderstandings that give rise to hatred and violence among adults. Thus, teaching the history of religions or customs can provide a useful reference tool for moulding future behaviour. Forgetting that they are putting themselves across as models, they may, because of their attitude, inflict lifelong harm on their pupils in terms of the latter`s openness to other people and their ability to face up to the inevitable tensions between individuals, groups and nations. One of the essential tools for education in the twenty-first century will be a suitable forum for dialogue and discussion. In the world of work, too, so many achievements would not have been possible if people had not successfully moved beyond the conflicts that generally arise in hierarchical organizations through their involvement in a common project.

Finally, Learning to Be: The aim of development is the complete fulfillment of man, in all the richness of his personality, the complexity of his forms of expression and his various commitments – as individual, member of a family and of a community, citizen and producer, inventor of techniques and creative dreamer`. Rather than educating children for a given society, the challenge will be to ensure that everyone always has the personal resources and intellectual tools needed to understand the world and behave as a fair-minded, responsible human being. More than ever before, the essential task of education seems to be to make sure that all people enjoy the freedom of thought, judgment, feeling and imagination to develop their talents and keep control of as much of their lives as they can. Education should contribute to every person`s complete development – mind and body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic appreciation and spirituality.

New methods have evolved from experiments at local community level. Their effectiveness in reducing violence or combating various social problems is widely recognized. The twenty-first century will need a varied range of talents and personalities even more than exceptionally gifted individuals, who are equally essential in any society. Concern with developing the imagination and creativity should also restore the value of oral culture and knowledge drawn from children`s or adults` experiences.

A new human cousin discovered

By: Dr Irengbam Mohendra Singh

While God has been elusive for eternity, refusing to unfold his mysteries, if we look back in time we will find that we have begun to unravel the mysteries of nature with vast changes in our intellectual achievements, such as Gödel’s theorem, molecular biology and Wittgenstein’s antiphilosophy.

In the midst of all these, archaeologists and geneticists were flabbergasted at the discovery of a new human cousin. Professor Chris Stringer, human origins researcher at London’s Natural History Museum, one of the leading proponents of the recent single (African) origin hypothesis, remarked that: “This new DNA work provides an entirely new way of looking at the evolution of humans in central and eastern Asia.”

The plot is thickening about the origin of early humans who inhabited this planet of ours. There may have been seven distinct types of human ancestor from Africa who expanded to remote islands of Indonesia, Europe and Siberia.

Every one of them became extinct like the dinosaurs between thousands of years to millennia except us. It may have been because of the ingenuity, intelligence and adaptability of the Homo sapiens species that we are here today. Our brain has now reached maturity and it will not expand any more. And we are here to stay.

The surprise story began in March 2010 when scientists, led by Johannes Krause and fellow researcher, Swedish biologist Svante Paabo from Mark Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Eastern Germany, published online in the “Nature”, the finding of the DNA from a girl’s old finger bone.

The bit of bone but a huge bone for evolutionists was found in 2008 by Russian archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of Novosibirsk, working at the site of Denisova cave, in the Altai Krai Mountains of southern Siberia. They sent it to Leipzig for identification

A finger bone fragment from the fifth finger of a juvenile female that lived 40,000 years ago, as well as a fragment of a molar tooth, much bigger than human molar was discovered. The finger bone was found within 65 miles of known Neanderthal and modern human sites. Later in 2011, a toe bone was also unravelled (it is currently undergoing analysis).

The finger bone’s mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis showed it to be distinct from the mtDNAs of Neanderthals and modern humans. Subsequent studies on the nuclear genome from this specimen, as well as mtDNA from the tooth, determined that this group shares a common origin with Neanderthals and interbred with the ancestors of some present day Melanesians (people from the islands of Papa New Guinea) and Australian aborigines.

This juvenile hominin is now dubbed the “X-woman” (referring to the maternal descent of mtDNA), or the “Denisova hominin”. Some artefacts, including a bracelet, excavated in the cave at the same level were carbon dated to around 40,000 BP.

(2)
Prof Paabo noted that the existence of these distant branch humans creates much more complex picture of human kind during the late Pleistocene epoch. Denisova Cave is known to have also been inhabited by Neanderthal people and perhaps by modern humans. Because of the cool climate in this location, the discovery benefited from DNA’s ability to survive for longer periods at lower temperatures of the cave at 32 degrees Fahrenheight.

The analysis indicated that modern humans, Neanderthals and the Denisova hominin last shared a common ancestor around 1 million years ago. Denisovans are found to be a sister group to Neanderthals and had similar ancestors, because all non-African humans have Neanderthal DNA.

According to researchers, this provides confirmation that there were at least four distinct types of humans in existence (including Homo erectus) when anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) first left their African homeland.

The fact that Denisovans were discovered in southern Siberia, but contributed genetic material to modern human populations in Southeast Asia suggests that their population may
have been widespread in Asia during the Pleistocene age.

The DNA analysis further indicated that these new Denisovans were the result of an earlier migration out of Africa, distinct from the later out-of-Africa migrations associated with Neanderthals and modern humans, but also distinct from the earlier migration of Homo erectus, who were to colonise Asia.

According to the co-author in the “Nature”, Richard Green of the University of California, Santa Cruz, there was probably an ancestral group that left Africa between 300,000 and 400.000 years ago and quickly diverged, with one branch becoming the Neanderthals who spread into Europe and the other branch moving east and becoming Denisovans.

When modern humans left Africa 60,000 years ago, they first encountered the Neanderthals, an interaction prevailed that left traces of Neanderthal DNA scattered throughout the genomes of all non-Africans. The other group of humans later came in contact with Denisovans leaving traces of Denisovan DNA in the genomes who settled in Melanesi – an assemblage of islands of Australia’s coast including New Guinea.

Richard Green says, “It was fruitous that this discovery came quickly on the heels of the Neanderthal genome, because we already had the team ready to do a similar analysis.” He said Denisovans were quite different from Neanderthals and modern humans. They had teeth similar to those of older human ancestors, such as Homo erectus.

The Leipzig scientist Kraus said that since the discovery was announced in March 2010, the researchers have been focussed on the task of decoding the entire 3 billion DNA building blocks in the complete genetic make-up of the newcomer from the Atlai Mountains.

The Leipzig scientists have also reported the isolation and sequencing of nuclear DNA from the Denisovan finger bone in 2010. The specimen showed an unusual preservation of DNA and low level of contamination, allowing them a detailed comparison of its genome with Neanderthal and modern humans.

They concluded that the Denisovan population along with Neanderthal shared a
common branch from the lineage leading to modern African humans.. The estimated average time of divergence between Denisovans and Neanderthals sequences is
(3)
640,000 years ago, and between both of these and the sequences of modern Africans is 804,000 years ago.

Modern genetic studies show that app. 4% of non-African modern human DNA
relates to Neanderthals. A new comparison of Denisovan genome from six modern humans, one each from South Africa, Nigeria, France, Hans Chinese, Papua New
Guinea and Bougainville islands showed that between 4% and 6% of the genome of the Melanesians derive from Denisovan population.

The scientists suggest that the genes were probably introduced during the early migration of the ancestors of Melanesians into Southeast Asia, where Denisovans once ranged widely over eastern Asia.

Mark Stoneking, molecular anthropologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary anthropology, Leipzig, (most famous for his estimation that human
clothing originated about 72,000 years ago, by sequencing the genes of head and body
lice in 2007) led a research team, which found genetic evidence that, in addition to
Melanesians, Australian aborigines, and small, scattered groups of people in
Southeast Asia, such as Negrito of Mamanawa in the Phillipines shares Denisovan ancestry, though Andaman Islander Negritos and Malaysian Jehai, do not.

With their result, they challenged the belief that Denisovans interbred in mainland Asia before spreading to the island from Southeast Asia, Melanesia, and Australia.

Recent genetic studies in 2011 have indicated that modern humans may have mated with “at least two groups” of ancient humans: Neanderthals and Denisovans.

Ian Tatersall of the Department of Physical Anthropology at the American Museum of National History says that “We are the only hominid around today, and we tend to think that that’s how it’s always been. But the evidence is accumulating that the human evolutionary tree is quite luxuriantly branching.

Scientists have no idea what the Denisovan hominis look like. Paabo says that because the Denisova homini is assumed to be human, it’s possible that there are many unknown homini fossils waiting to be discovered. Palaeontologists will continue to scour for remnants in Siberia.

Apart from Denisovans, scientists discovered a new very strange humanlike species (published in “Nature” in 2004) that lived over the past few hundred years in the east of the last islands of Java in Indonesia – a scattered remote archipelago. The remains of this new species had been excavated in 2004, in Liang Bua Cave on the island of Flores, and hence named Homo floresiensis (aka the Hobbit). The creature was only one meter tall and very small-brained.

Homo floresiensis was considered intelligent as the cave contained evidence of tool making, butchery of animal carcasses, and fire. They survived until about 17,000 years ago. The latest studies of the Hobbit bones have led to the radical idea that these tiny people in fact, descended from something more primitive than Homo erectus – yet another species whose ancestors emerged from Africa 2 million years ago, or
(4)
more, and then evolved in isolation in Southeast Asia, finally disappearing within the last 20 millennia.

There is no knowledge of when the Neanderthals ad Homo erectus disappeared,
overwhelmed by Homo sapiens, probably because of better tools and other resources.

What stumps the scientists by the finding this strange humanlike creatures is that Africa could have been home to yet another species of humans within the last 50,000 years, based on signs of possible ancestral DNA in modern African populations and fossils found in Nigeria and Congo.
