Open letter in support of Pu Phungjathang Tonsing for the post of Deputy Chief Minister, Manipur

Pu Phungjathang Tonsing Elected INC candidate, truly deserves the post of Deputy Chief Ministership for the following reasons;

  1.     By virtue of being  the  senior-most amongst contenders in Political arena who have been elected 6 consecutive times in the State Legislature Assembly
  2.     Never in the Manipur history witnessed 9 Kuki MLAs, representing a single party INC. In other words all Kukis are in support of Congress (I) Govt.
  3.     Manipur  completed 10th Assembly Election in 2012, till the last Govt. there had  never been any Kuki representative holding the highest berth as CM, not even a deputy. Because till the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly only  Meiteis and Nagas are given  the top position continuously.
  4.     If INC manifestos stands true for peaceful co-existence and equality amongst its citizens & leadership, they should never let this opportunity pass in vain  against Shri Phungzathang, the senior most among his colleagues.
  5.     High Command authorities ought to remember the sacrificial contribution towards Indian Freedom movement led by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ( INA) wherein thousands of  Kukis joined him and  fought for free India  till their last breath. Even today a handful INA pensioners are still alive in our midst  to bear living witness to the greatest contribution of our forefathers for our country in general and Manipur in particular [for Azaadi Hindustan]
  6.     As a saying goes “Impossible is found only in the dictionary of fools” and  “All the worlds a stage..”
  7.     It is our hope and fervent expectation from Indian rulers that they ought to realize their commitment  and sincerity to downtrodden  bonafide citizen without any biasness and discrimination.
  8.     GOD Bless the newly form Govt. of Manipur.

Dhobi Ghat – a slum of the national capital: questions on development, governance and role of civil societies

Dhobi Ghat , a slum area with a majority of muslim population , is situated on the bank of river Yamuna, near Batla House, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi with around 150 families. These families are mostly deprived and poor, surviving with low literacy rate, malnutrition, hunger and lack of sanitation.

Khudai Khidmatgar had organized a youth camp under the guidance of social activist Faisal Khan, with its objective of ‘service of God’ on 26th feb 2012 for the families of dhobi ghat. There were 20 volunteers in this campaign. I was one of them to experience the ground conditions of this area.

One of the most shocking facts discovered was that no civil society group/ government officials had ever visited them, even though this area is in the capital city and is situated near Jamia Nagar. How is it possible that NGOs who get crores of rupees to work in slum , to eradicate poverty, to fight with malnutrition, to raise voices for rights, to campaign for education etc; have never visited this area, I wondered.

My report here is dedicated to those people, with the hope that their condition will become better gradually through joint efforts of the government, civil society and their own. In my first sight of this area, I saw children playing, not with modern era toys, but with plastic bags immersed in waste, garbage of river etc.

The Ultimate Rock and Roll Experience is headed straight to you!!! International Rock band FIREHOUSE is slated to perform live at Imphal on April 10, 2012. The “FireHouse Rock to rescue India tour 2012” is organized by 7 Sisters Entertainment (Sky Group venture), in association with Queensberry Foundation.  The event will be held at Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal.

Coming to Manipur- FireHouse Rock to Rescue India Tour 2012 – April 10, 2012 at Imphal

The band is slated to perform at Dimapur on April 7 at DDSC stadium, after which it will head straight to rock capital-Imphal.  With the tour dates finally announced, fans can get ready to witness a slice of rock music history.

FireHouse has been rockin’ for over a decade. Their music has taken them all over the world and has produced Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum records in the United States and Countries abroad. In 1990, their first album, entitled ‘FireHouse’ was released. The bands first single, Shake and Tumble, had impressive radio success. The band then released Don’t Treat Me Bad, which became their first Top Ten hit. This was followed by Love of a Lifetime, which also entered the Top Ten reaching the #3 spot on the United State charts. The band’s second album, Hold Your Fire, was released in 1992. It produced the hits Reach for the Sky and Sleeping with You. Another Top Ten hit, When I Look into Your Eyes, peaked on the US charts at #5. This album earned the band two more gold albums and over 1 million sales worldwide. In 1995, FireHouse released their third album on Epic, simply titled 3.
Once again, FireHouse produced another Top Forty hit in the US with I Live My Life for You. It was with this album, FireHouse made their first trip to Southeast Asia for a promotional tour. Their fourth album, Good Acoustics, was released in 1996 ad quickly went Gold in Malaysia, Thailand, and Philippines. Good Acoustics contains unplugged versions of the group’s greatest hits, as well as four new songs. This album produced foreign hits such as In Your Perfect World, Love Don’t Care, and You Are My Religion. Category 5 was officially released in the United States in 1999. On April 22, 1999, the band recorded their live show in Osaka. The result – the first ever live album by FireHouse. Bring ‘em Out Live was released in Japan in December 1999 and in the United States on Spitfire Records in July 2000. The turn of the century brought the release their seventh album, titled 02. This album had notable success despite the changing style of popular rock music.

As music changes over time, Firehouse continues to evolve their musical style; yet, at the same time. Hang onto their hard rock roots. Released in October of 2003, album number 8 is no exception. You can expect to hear what Firehouse is famous for… soulful, melodic hard rock.

International Women’s Day Celebration

This International Women’s Day has once again reaffirmed the belief of the people of Manipur in the spirit that Manipuri women have shown in various fields. In a society where everything is rotting, the women of Manipur have everything to suffer and yet they have all throughout been in the front to fight the painful rotting. They have proved this when they play in the field, on the ring, in the jail, on the street. They have created a place of their own in proving this and we cannot miss to recognise it.

In connection to the occasion of International Women’s Day, Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD) had organised a meeting to celebrate the spirit and achievements of Manipuri women in their struggle for a peaceful home and society in Manipur. The meeting discussed the socio-political environment in Manipur in order to discern the intensities of the history of Manipuri women’s struggle. While the need to see the context of women’s political action in Manipur was the focus of the discussion, MSAD also addressed the need to seriously look into the crimes against women perpetrated by beastly security and police forces, and cruel husbands alike. MSAD in this regard holds that series of recent cases of rape, murder and torture of women have challenged the civil society in Manipur to offer a critical engagement with these brutal events so that women are safe. In the spirit of the International Women’s Day, MSAD once again appeals to all Manipuri women to fight such atrocities both in the domestic and public world.

Manipur Student Association Delhi (MSAD) organized a social gathering of the 101 year jubilee celebration of International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March 2012. It was conducted at Delhi University.

The government of India representatives has all along been saying that it would take up appropriate action against those groups violating the agreed ground rules of either ceasefire or suspension of operations. We will not discuss here the action taken report of the government of India as we have still not seen any action so far. What matters most is that the Indian government has not spelled out in clear terms as to what kind of action they are proposing to take up in case of violation of the ground rules takes place. We have heard enough warnings of actions being taken up in the meetings of the Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Committees, yet actions do not follow. The groups also know that the warnings are simply meant for those who are demanding action and thus the groups seldom takes such warnings seriously. We shall not mention cases of armed incursions in the state of Manipur by the NSCN groups as the ceasefire is not in operation in the state. Besides running a parallel government in the Naga dominated areas, it had opened three base camps inside the state of Manipur which had come out in the open during the Shiroi standoff between Assam Rifles and the NSCN-IM. There are several reports of the NSCN groups resorting to extortion and forcible taxation in Nagaland specially in the case of Manipur bound trucks, besides instances of cadres moving in uniform with arms in various towns of Nagaland since the groups entered into ceasefire agreements with the Indian government. There are also cases of standoffs between the NSCN and paramilitary forces specially the Assam Rifles. These cases have been discussed in the meetings of the Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Cells and warnings have supposedly been given. Despite the supposed warnings, the groups continue to violate the ground rules. In such a backdrop, the Union Home Ministry’s warnings to the signatories of the SoO agreements remain a joke. The complaints of intervention by SoO groups in the recent Manipur Legislative Assembly elections from both political parties and individuals remains to be addressed either by the Election Commission of India or the Union Home Ministry. The Home Ministry has acknowledged the receipt of such complaints. Yet, it is still confused to what action they are supposed to take up. Which is simply why, the Ministry officials are engaging in mere rhetoric.

On the other hand, the most interesting part of the Home Ministry official’s statement is regarding his ignorance of the ideology and demands of the various Kuki groups who have signed the SoO agreement. Joint Secretary Shambhu Singh of the Home Ministry on the sidelines of the signing of tripartite agreement with two new groups United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA) and Pakan Reunification Army (PRA) had said, most of these groups have been operating to make money and make the life of people miserable and that he do not know if the groups have any ideology. The statement while not only exposing the attitude of the state towards those groups with whom they had signed the SoO agreements, also reveals how the Indian government operates while dealing with such groups. The Indian government’s main concern is how to ‘immobilize’ such groups and gain brownie points. Immobilization had become a misnomer in the post-SoO phase with most of the militant groups operating at will from the designated camps with the security forces and the police turning a blind eye to the gross violation of the ground rules. The state is not worried as long as there are no complaints. They are only concerned about the statement they could regularly make to the press and the public that they have been able to successfully rein in militant groups operating in the northeastern region. It is their mantra. They are not concerned about the other realities which are threatening the region.

Women`s rights & men`s role

By Gwangphun Gangmei
I am a man born of a woman. I am morally obliged as a man to stands,  and  to speak for the welfare and security of women. Today in a men dominated society, it is indeed very hard for women to really express their pains and rights to be heard and get comforted, secured or relieved.  The dominant attitude of men still holds strong refusing to listen to and understand the position of women. Today, women, girls or female human being are being greatly devalued, lowered their dignity below humanity. By culture or fashion of the world, Women’s value and dignity have been greatly damaged and their position as equally human being are so unnaturally lowered. They are made as an object for men’s gratification. They  can be sold, bought or bartered. They are used as beast of burden or slaves in the homes. Many a time, they are beaten, treated and even killed for no false of their own. Being weaker vessels, helpless and beautiful in form and structure, men folk’s attempts to molest rape or tease much against their will.
What an inhumane world is our world becoming? What shall we as men do about changing this wicked scenario?  Men must realize and enlightened. Women must awake onto their status and rights to live a free life together with men. This generation must be changed to generation of love, hope and prosperity.

The reality and unwanted truth is, women are not an animal or lower human being. They are equally human being in all manner and nature. I states, that women are complement part of men; man without woman is not a complete humanity.  Therefore human society consists of both man and woman. Half or more of Human population is women. If man advocates inequality of status with women or put women lower being than men, on what authority is such sanctioned against the will and plan of the creator? What gain or good will man profit other than prideful dominant ruling which naturally leads to human downfall? What is better than mutual sharing, understanding, helping and mutual living together with women? Man needs woman to build a home, society and nation. I am pain to see disparity and discrepancy in today society where women are compelled and conditioned, subjection to men’s wilful imposition. I don’t read books on women’s rights neither intend to gain their favour nor bribed. I only feel and understand their conditions by observing their plights not by hearing their report of grievances but by listening, observing and sensing their pain through their unspoken languages. I feel like am intervened by unseen touch, to spell out the truth about the other person called Woman. I accepted this inspiration and moved to write on Women’s reality left in obscured region of humanity induced or shaped by patriarchal system of human society. Women silently suffer throughout generations in the hands of men as systemized in the given society. Men remain stiff-necked and go on about doing their will upon women. Some blame women pointing to the event of Eden incidence and justifies that it is the creator’s designed, or as penalty given to women for committing the first sin. Any excuse or blame men may put on women to make their rights justified can never suffice  the reason for their action against the will and rights of women. However, strong the justification we Man may put on the issue, the truth remains and some day, the light of trut
h will shine upon the stiff-necked and eventually women-kind will be emancipated forever from the man-made imposition of authority over women.

Nature bears witness that Woman painfully generates mankind. Naturally Men are made to be loving and kind to women for painfully bearing human generation. Man was alone and incomplete without woman and so God made woman out of man to be with man as better half-of human being. Woman is said to be the better half of man. Man the stronger half of woman. Therefore, the biblical psalmist states, Man(man & woman) are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Unnaturally and unfortunately, women are being treated by mankind as server or servant to man. This mentality of man over woman is predominantly shaped as human culture. I said, this is not right. This is not what God made woman to be so. I believe, God made woman to be definitely with man as equal being having equally different functions, role and responsibility in all spheres of life. God made no lesser brain for woman and no lesser heart for man. The difference is in the use of it. Man’s brain and woman’s heart must work together to make a perfect whole of humanity. Man tried to use their brains without woman’s   to run the human society. The spoiled is irreparable and humanity is kept imbalanced. The sorrow of humanity results due to imbalance system of human society created by mankind. Womankind and mankind together makes humanity balance and perfect. Restoration of humanity to its balance position depends on man’s realization of their wrong mentality and woman’s as well their accepted condition. Woman must realize that they are equally human being having equal responsibility for the good or bad of the society. Men too must sense that women are equally responsible for the bad or good of the society. Having sense this equableness can humanity live together in harmony as designed by the Creator. In order to maintain peace, justice and harmony in the society,  both the sexes must equally sense the need for each other, respect each other and help each other in all affairs of life; social, political, spiritual and day to day personal and inter-personal activities. Man and woman must work together, shouldering the responsibility to care, preserve and protect life not only of man but also of animal and plants. The work of  Human welfare lies in both the sexes. Nature defines clearly the role, function and duty of man and woman, each to perform in relation to each other and for each other. God never give greater responsibility to man and lesser to woman. It is wrong to think the other way too. Man cannot reproduce without woman and vice-versa. Man therefore cannot live without woman and woman as well. Humanity needs each other for the purpose of human race to continue here on earth. In every consideration both the sexes must necessarily be included. Both are equally responsible and contributive. It is wrong to think that different in sex makes the difference in social status or rights. Human rights speak of both the sexes in equal term and volume. Man and woman are born free and given equal liberty to choose or do as he or she likes. Each is responsible for one’s own action or choice.  The false and sin of man cannot be transferred to woman and vice-versa. Therefore God judges man and woman as per his or her work. The dignity of   man   and woman as a human person is equal in the eye of God and so we must view as God views it. In the context of Naga society, where belief system is being shifted from animism or olden deity worship  to Christianity, there arose certain thinking pattern; some thinks to purely preserve the customary practices, some thinks to modify to suit the Christian society, while others totally rejects the customary and traditional practices. In all the thinking pattern and beliefs, there exists a sort of discrimination against women in one form or the other. Therefore, what we need today is, to understand, accept and apply which is relevance, universal, and practical to our context. According to Art.371 A of the constitution of India, Nagas have every right to accept or reject or modify or amend any laws of parliament or even to apply it in the Naga society provided the Nagaland state Assembly pass it as laws.

My appeal to the Govt of Nagaland and all the representatives in the state assembly is to broad-mindedly consider and render a better position for woman; accepting women as part of men in all decision making level or forum so as Naga society can also cope with the changing and growing reality of the present generation, not lagging behind, dwelling in the old and darkened customary binding. 33% reservation is Indian system prompted and tempered by their Hindu culture, and traditional practices trying to apply in our Naga society as legal imposition in the process of indenisation of Nagas till all Nagas are Indian by culture, belief and practices. It implies that, so long as Nagas remain under Indian system of governance, the Indian laws and regulations binds and we are bounded.  Providing only 33% reservation to women can be conditionally accepted and understood as actualisation of man’s role toward women as fellow human being. In the process of realising and understanding women in the Naga society, men should be happy and well-come out the status given. I propose that women should be given equal status, rights in the society for them to work alongside with men in all social interactions and development.  Only when Naga men realize the indispensable reality of Naga woman to work together with man as equally human being responsible to each other and for each other, then a new and better generation of hope, prosperity and Peace will be actualized. It is time for Naga to think and live in term of pragmatic and realistic reasoning prompted by the current world of changing  and growing, not just speaking or doing things as accustomed to by culture or tradition. We need a changed mentality to transform old and obsolete norms and lifestyles into a realistic and awakened understanding.  Some one rightly put the words this way; “It is not the sins of the fathers that descend unto the third generation, but the sorrows of the Mothers”. The unexpressed pains and unrecognized rights of women remain unaddressed or not listen to adequately. This is a failing part of the Naga society. It is men’s role to restore and rebuild the lost image of women being, their status and rights as equally human being so as dignity of human person is recreated. I believe women in leadership roles can help restore balance and wholeness to our society.

Maoists release one abducted Italian

BHUBANESWAR, March 25 (agencies): Maoists Sunday released one of the two Italian hostages they had abducted March 14. The rebels said they will release the other Italian only after the government fulfills some of their demands.

After his release Claudio Colangelo said it was a frightening experience for him. He said he wants to visit India again but will be foolish to visit areas where there are Maoists. He said he wants to return to his native country Italy as soon as possible.

Appealing to the Maoists to release the second Italian immediately unharmed, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said he will request the two mediators who were named by the rebels to resume talks to speed up the process.

State Home Secretary U.N. Behera said the state government will continue its efforts to secure the release of the other Italian, Bosusco Paolo, and a Biju Janata Dal legislator.

Rebel leader Sabyasachi Panda, who is named as `Sunil`, handed over Colangelo, 61, to a select group of three journalists somewhere in Kandhamal district. The Maoists released the Italian following an “appeal from people and a cross-section of society”, Panda said.

The guerrillas abducted Paolo and Colangelo from a forested area on the border of state`s Ganjam and Kandhamal district March 14.

On Saturday, the rebels kidnapped ruling BJD legislator and a popular tribal leader Jhina Hikaka, 37, in a hilly area of Koraput district.

However, Panda said he is not responsible for abduction of the BJP legislator and it has not been done by his group.

The rebel leader also said he released Colangelo because the state government halted negotiations with the Maoist-named mediators citing violence from the Maoist side.

He asserted that there was no violence in the area commanded by his group after declaration of ceasefire by him. Panda is the organising secretary of the Orissa state committee of Communist Party of India-Maoist.

The two Maoist mediators, tribal expert B.D. Sharma said social activist Dandapani Mohanty, who had withdrawn from mediation expressed his happiness over the release of Colangelo and said the government could resume dialogue for the release of the other.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Sunday appealed to the rebels to also release the legislator immediately.

IMPHAL, March 25: A man, who was reportedly gunned down by a combined team of Imphal west police commandos and 18 Sikh Regiment during an encounter at Naran Konjin under Wangoi police station on March 23, was an innocent bread-earner and not a militant, his family claimed Sunday.

Md Firoz Khan, 25, son of (L) Hesamuddin of Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai was reported to have been shot dead in an encounter with security forces at Naran Konjin on March 23, but his family has claimed otherwise. The family has claimed that Fioz was picked up by security forces and later killed in a fake encounter.

Firoz is survived by three daughters and his six-month-old pregnant wife and that he was a daily wage earner, according to his family.

He left home on March 23 evening around 6pm along with his two friends identified as Md Abdul Rajaq, 23 of Lilong Chandakhong and Md Rasim Khan, 23 of Lilong Haoreibi Konjin Leikai in Thoubal district.

The two individuals were caught by locals yesterday afternoon from their respective houses and later the residents grilled them over the killing of Firoz, the family maintained.

According to the duo, on that day March 23, the three friends were going for a walk at Sawombung Penakhong. They started running from the area when they spotted a commando team approaching them. Police rescue man from kidnappers

IMPHAL, March 25 (Newmai News Network): A salesman was rescued by the security force personnel in the late afternoon of Sunday from Manipur`s southern district Churachandpur from armed men.

According to the police, one Kh. Ibungojaoba (41) was abducted by three gunmen from Churachandpur market at about 7:30 pm on Saturday.

The kidnappers then demanded Rs 1 lakh for the release of Ibungojaoba from his employer.

Ibungojaoba who hails from Khumakjam Leikei of Churachandpur works as a salesman in a butcher shop which mostly deals in chicken in Churachandpur market.

At around 5:30 pm today, following a tip-off from certain quarters, a combined team of Churachandpur police and Assam Rifles personnel rushed to Bollen village, some 6 km from Churachandpur police station and rescued the man. The security personnel also arrested two of the three abductors.
