Jagadish Shettar was sworn in as Karnataka’s Chief Minister on Thursday.
Governor H.R. Bhardwaj administered the oath of office to him in presence of a large number of BJP leaders and supporters.
K.S. Eshwarappa and R. Ashoka were sworn in as deputy chief ministers.
Shettar, who has the backing of former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, became the third BJP chief minister in the state in four years since the party came to power there in 2008.
The outgoing chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda was also present on the occasion and was seen seated next to Shettar, who was formally elected as the leader of Karnataka BJP legislature party earlier on Tuesday.
The selection of Shettar as Karnataka’s next chief minister can be viewed as a major victory for state BJP strongman Yeddyurappa, who has not been allowed to reclaim the chief minister’s chair, as he continues to battle illegal mining charges leveled against him by the Karnataka Lokayukta.
Gowda resigned as state chief minister yesterday after a less than comfortable tenure of eleven months, making way for Shettar.

Aizawl, July 12 NNN: In protest against the proposed ‘The Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011’ and other proposed legislations of the central government, the two-day (Wednesday and Thursday) “cessation of work” called by the Bar Council of India (BCI) has been endorsed by Mizoram Bar Association.
Observing the protest, the Mizoram Bar Association set ablaze a copy of The Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011 in front of the Court here in the state capital yesterday.
The lawyers of Mizoram, along with their counterparts in other parts of the country, since yesterday crippled the judicial works of the state. Mizoram Bar Association yesterday held general body meeting, after which they had burnt the bill.
Meanwhile, the lawyers in Delhi gathered at Jantar Mantar in protest against the central government proposed legislation.
If “The Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011” and the other proposed legislations are passed in the parliament, “the legislations will harm the autonomy of the BCI and its members”; “Foreign colleges, foreign solicitor firms and lawyers from other countries would be allowed to work in India”; “The Ministry of Human Resource Development shall constitute a small body to regulate the Bar Council of India, which will enable the ruling political leaders to influence the judiciary”, members of the Bar Council of India across the country claimed.

Dimapur, July 12 NNN: The NSCN-IM has straight away dismissed the allegation that the outfit had abducted contractor Irungbam Irabanta on May 27.
The Naga outfit said the report of NSCN-IM’s involvement in the abduction of contractor Irungbam Irabanta on May 27 has come as a bolt from the blue and such baseless allegation must has been motivated with ulterior motive. The NSCN-IM said that given the nature of one Trinamool Congress member Shyamkumar who raised the issue in Manipur Assembly in a very hurried manner without waiting for the police investigation to unveil the truth reflects a strong anti-NSCN-IM campaign.
“What is more surprising is mention of Francis, the then CAO (Central Administration Officer) based in Ukhrul and another Leishi, Leacy as the main culprits. It may be mention that Francis was on leave during the time when the reported abduction took place and he was in Guwahati in connection with his wife’s medical treatment. He was there for more than a week and he knows nothing about such person. Moreover, Francis has never met Irabanta in person nor talk to him on the phone in any matter. His name for any purpose has never showed up in the office of CAO/Wung Tangkhul Region. As such pointing accusing finger against Francis and his Leacy without any concrete evidence can never be accepted,” the NSCN-IM stated.
The outfit then said it also constrains to say that such unwarranted accusation against Francis and Leishi is not only to malign the image of WTR/GPRN but also to create tension on communal line at the behest of the external hands. The family members in question and the general public is therefore urged to have proper inquiry to dig out the fact before pointing fingers at anyone.“Let the truth come out as the chief minister said before the Assembly that the case is under investigation by a special police team,” .

Dimapur, July 10 NNN: The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) has announced officially to impose 96-hour ‘total bandh’ along the National Highway 2 (previously NH-39) under its jurisdiction from 12 noon of July 11 in protest against the non-compliance of the Manipur government to the conditions set by the SAYO over the hijacking and drugging of Tata mobile driver and his colleague.
Southern Angami Youth Organisation president Peter alias Seyievilie said till today his organisation has not imposed any bandh or blockade as reported in sections of the media but it was SAYO volunteers carrying out a kind of ‘surprise checking out’ on the Manipur vehicles after the three day deadline set by the youth body which lapsed on July 5.
Seyievilie said that the nature of the 96-hour bandh will be restricting social mobility and vehicular movements from Manipur under the jurisdiction of the SAYO along the Imphal-Dimapur route.
Peter alias Seyievilie reiterated that the Angami youth body demands from the Manipur government to produce the hijacked vehicle and the four culprits before the SAYO.
Meanwhile, due to the agitation along the National Highway 2 (NH-39 previously) by the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) since July 6 evening, the inter-state transportation between Manipur and Nagaland has been severely affected in this route.
The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) of Nagaland had earlier given a three-day deadline from July 2 to the Manipur government to produce the culprits and the vehicle before the youth body relating to the June 21 incident of Kohima.
Four persons from Manipur hired a Tata Mobile mini truck from a Kohima parking on June 21 to go to Manipur. On reaching Tadubi in Senapati district (Manipur) the four miscreants drugged the driver of the vehicle and his friend and dumped the two there. The four miscreants took away the vehicle. The driver has been identified as one Keneinguto Mejura.

Dimapur, July 9 NNN: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio and his legislators, all non-Congressmen who share the ‘bitterest’ relationship with the Congress legislators in Nagaland legislative assembly, will vote for a Congressman in Pranab Mukherjee in the upcoming Presidential election.
There are two political calculations that political analysts can put at over the Naga Peoples Front (NPF) MLAs decision to vote for the Congressman.
Nagaland assembly election is due early next year and the Neiphiu Rio team is intensely focusing at that event in every thing it does.
Anything the NPF does, it has to outdo the rival Opposition party (Congress) in the state. Even in the election like the President of India, experiencing a defeat will mean a herculean damage to the party for the next assembly election as the rival Congress will score a point (election campaigns in Nagaland have started in a mild way).
Another calculation can be that (though a bit remote but anything is possible in politics), the Neiphiu Rio team may merge with the Congress party before the next assembly election so that the NPF will have smoother campaigns in the fund-starved Nagaland. This is because, public have the notion that since the government at the Centre is led by the Congress, the government led by the same party in the state can only bring funds at will.
On Saturday, during his whirlwind tour in some areas of the Northeast, Pranab Mukherjee managed to garner solid supports from the Neiphiu Rio government. Legislators from the NPF had met the UPA Presidential candidate in Dimapur assuring Mukherjee of their support.
Although Neiphiu Rio has been maintaining a good rapport with PA Sangma, he has definitely chosen his political career first than anything else. How has PA Sangma reacted?

Mail News Service
Guwahati, July 9 : The Ministry of Environment and Forests reviewed flood situation in Kaziranga Tiger Reserve of Assam.
The Kaziranga Tiger Reserve has an area of 1033 sq.km., which includes the Kaziranga National Park (859 sq.km.), Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary (44 sq.km.) and Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary (70 sq.km.). The reserve is located in Nagaon, Golaghat and Sonitpur District of Assam and is bounded by the Brahmaputra, and to the South of the Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary. The National Highway 37 separates the reserve from the said Sanctuary.
Being located in the Brahmaputra Flood Plains, the reserve is prone to annual floods. However, the normal flood inundation is inherent and important aspect of the Kaziranga ecosystem to maintain the large number of water bodies (around 175) and the floral/faunal biodiversity of the area.
As per the report, most of the Rhino deaths were from the older age group, besides calves. However, three of them have been poached. The hog deer mortality, in particular has been reported very high (512). The report has highlighted the need for relieving the corridor areas from human pressure and avoiding change in land use pattern.
The park management has deployed patrolling staff for the protection of wild animals along the highways by creating barriers alongwith 24×7 surveillance. The staff of Karbi Anglong Sanctuary was also co-opted to strengthen protection in the area. Besides to safeguard wild animals from drowning in floods, artificial mounds / bunds have also been created at various places. Wild animals are also rescued through boats. Under the ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger, funding support is provided to the State for such protection initiatives. During the last financial year, an amount of Rs. 4.27 crores of central assistance was released to Kaziranga under Project Tiger, this inter alia, includes creation of a large number of patrolling camps within the reserve, besides other protection measures. An alternate alignment has been agreed upon for diverting / widening the NH-37. However, since the said highway is in use, the NHAI would be approached for providing flyovers at vantage points for the traffic.
This would prevent road hits, while providing safe passage for wild animals from beneath.
Earlier, the State has been requested to declare the adjoining Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary as
a Tiger Reserve to enable adequate protection with Project Tiger assistance. This would be reiterated for expediting the same. The Member Secretary, NTCA would be visiting the reserve alongwith his team for spot appraisal / review, to strengthen the efforts by assisting the State. During normal floods, which are recurring feature, there is less mortality of wild animals. However, flash floods do occur due to breaches in the upper areas of Brahmaputra, which result in increased deaths of wild animals. During 1998, a similar flood situation occurred in Kaziranga resulting a large number of wild animal deaths in the area.

Gowda ‘martyred’ because of Prez poll : Yadav

New Delhi, July 8 (ANI): Janata Dal-United (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav on Sunday took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the political impasse in Karnataka, saying Chief Minister D.V. New Delhi, July 8 (ANI): Janata Dal-United (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav on Sunday took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the political impasse in Karnataka, saying Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda had been martyred because of the July 19 presidential election.
“In this country, such situations arise every now and then and the people who say that there is no casteism, then what is happening in Karnataka? This is the truth. The nation does not even openly discuss this, and big political parties deny the role of castes in their decision, then what is this?” said Yadav.
“Someone had to bear the brunt of the presidential elections, so Sadananda Gowda became the scapegoat.
But his party and my party are different. This is an internal matter, but from a political point of view, I believe that the pressure of the presidential elections came on Gowda. He had to sacrifice. Had the elections not taken place now, this would have not happened,” he added.
BJP President Nitin Gadkari earlier today confirmed Gowda’s resignation, saying the latter has stepped down for the party’s welfare.
Lauding Gowda’s contribution at different levels within the party, Gadkari said the former would continue to be an important leader of the BJP in Karnataka.
Gadkari further informed that Karnataka’s Minister for Rural Development Jagadish Shettar would be the new legislative party leader in the state.
“A change has been made considering the political scenario. We have also made the change taking note of the upcoming assembly polls and the general elections in 2014,” he said.
Gadkari said that senior BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh would be going to Bangalore on Monday to attend a state BJP meeting as observers to sanction Shettar’s appointment as Karnataka chief minister.
Shettar, who has the backing of former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, will be the third BJP chief minister in the state in four years since the party came to power there in 2008. The announce by the BJP central leadership came after intense parleys at Gadkari’s residence, which aimed to take decision to end the ongoing political stalemate in Karnataka.
Gowda, who replaced Yeddyurappa after the latter was removed in the wake of corruption charges, today said the central leadership had taken a decision to change the leadership in his state due to political reasons, but emphasized that he would provide all support to the new leader. “The incoming chief minister will be given all sorts of co-operation by me. And certainly we will see that once again people of Karnataka will bless us in the next coming elections. I hope that my central leaders will be visiting my state tomorrow, or day after. As soon as they come out there, after the election of new leader, I will be going to submit my resignation,” said Gowda.
“I will see that the incoming chief minister will be very happy to carry out his duties in the coming days and I will support him to the best of my ability in Karnataka,” he added.
The crisis in the Karnataka BJP intensified last week after nine ministers resigned from the State Cabinet, thereby projecting a show of strength in their campaign for ousting Chief Minister Gowda.
