The closing function of the 22nd Governor’s Cup Invitation Polo Tournament, 2012 was held today at Pologround. Governor, Gurbhachan Jagat, I Hemochandra, MLA and others were present during the function. Governor speaking on the occasion said , “polo – Sagolkangjei which is the State Game of Manipur originates from Manipur. It is now being played world-wide and the people of Manipur should be legitimately proud of this. It is one of the assets which identifies Manipur and its people to the people living in India and abroad. The game of polo has a great potential of acting as a catalyst in encouraging sports tourism in the State and it can become a big attraction for tourists coming to Manipur, thereby boosting the economy of the State. Further development and promotion of polo is closely linked with the development of Manipuri Pony. Hence, efforts made by any organization in this respect deserve encouragement by all. I am confident that the contribution made by the Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association will go a long way towards further popularization, promotion and development of Polo and Manipuri Pony. I compliment the members of the Association in this regard.
As we are aware the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association which was established in the year 1977 aims at popularizing Polo – Sagolkangjei as. well as preserving and developing Manipuri Pony and also encouraging our players to participate in the national and international polo games. It is pleasing to note that the Association conducted the 27th N. Hazari State Polo Tournament, 2012 recently. Out of 21 teams which participated in the tournament, the 12 best teams were selected for the 3rd 57 Mountain Division Polo Tournament, 2012, which was sponsored by the GOC, 57 Mountain Division, Leimakhong and conducted during February 16 to 23 last. The best eight teams out of the 12 teams which participated in the 3rd 57 Mountain Division Polo Tournament have participated in the present tournament which concludes today. It is worth appreciating that the Army is also taking keen interest and active part in the promotion and development of the game of Polo in the State. It may be recalled that my predecessors contributed their best towards the development of Polo not only in the country but also in countries abroad. I shall also be happy to contribute towards the further development of this game as and when felt necessary.”
