Speaking at the occasion, NYK Youth Co-ordinator, CCPur and CDKRaF founder Shri Henkholun Doungel asserted that Chengjapao Doungel was an Indian freedom fighter and the title ‘Kuki Raja’ is given to him by the British for his being leader of the Kukis and the Kuki Rebellion 1917-1919. He also pointed out the good relationship Kukis had with Meitei kings such as Maharaj Gambhir Singh and Chandrakirti Singh and emphasised the importance of peaceful co-existence for all round development in the area.
About 300 villagers of the area participated in the Foundation Day Observation including village authority members and churches leaders.
It may be mentioned that in memory of Kuki Raja Chengjapao Doungel, his portraits with the inscription “King of Kukis” are displayed at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hall and Calcutta Museum, Kolkata which were established by the erstwhile British government. IMPHAL, Oct 10 MNS NNN: A 48-hour bandh call given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the disappearance of Irungbam Irabanta crippled normal life along the Imphal-Ukhrul road today.
No vehicles were seen moving along the route due to the strike that has begun from last midnight and to be continued till midnight of October 11. Even if vehicles for passenger transport service were off the road, public transport service up to places like Sawombung, Pourabi and Lamlai Tejpur along the highway was available.
There was no report of any untoward incident so far during the course of the general strike till evening.
Notably, the Irabanta JAC had earlier on October 6 announced for another indefinite economic blockade on the Imphal-Ukhrul road beginning October 12 if the state Government falls short of giving the JAC a tangible answer on the missing of Irabanta within October 11.
Irabanta, a sand supplier for Maphou Dam construction, was allegedly kidnapped by the rebel NSCN-IM on May 27 last. Since then he has remained untraceable. He is a resident of Nongdam Maning Leikai in Imphal East.
