IMPHAL, May 6: Manipuri Feature film `Leipaklei` directed by Aribam Syam Sharma was screened twice at the 14th edition of the Jeonju International Film Festival, South Korea. This was stated in a press release signed by Aribam David Sharma, Production Manager of Aribam Syam Sharma Productions. It was screened in a special section called ‘Beyond Bollywood’, a section that presents authentic Indian films that provides a rare opportunity to experience the culture of India’s provinces that has been neglected all this time, the release said.

In the ‘Guest Visit’ (GV) interaction session with the audience following the screening, Assistant Director Bobo Khuraijam represented the film team.

Austrian film maker, Angelika Brudnaik, whose film ‘1+8’ is also part of the festival, shared her enthusiasm to visit Manipur and explore the place. Film maker Jeanine Meerapfel from Germany wanted to know the plans from the side of the producers regarding the possibility of ‘Leipaklei’ getting screened elsewhere in other parts of the India and outside. The organizers thanked the film team for having made such an effort to showcase a simple yet warm story from Manipur said the release.

Bomb experts of the police picked up and exploded it safely at Langol. The saw mill is said to belong to one Dilip.

Another Chinese hand grenade tightly wrapped in plastic was found near Ibudhou Meijrao Lakpa Community hall of Irom Meijrao under Wangoi police station of Imphal west at around 11 a.m. and was safely exploded by bomb experts of the police on the banks of the Nambul river.

IMPHAL, May 6: A road accident on National highway number 37 on the Imphal Jiri Road claimed the lives of of two people besides leaving one with serious injuries. 

The incident happened today at around 9 am when a Scorpio Jeep bearing registration number MN01-5975 in which all the three persons were traveling fell down a gorge along the highway at Awang Khul under Noney police station in Tamenglong district. One person died on the spot while the other two were rushed to the Shija hospital in a critical condition with one succumbing to his injury at around 11.30 am today

The two persons who died in the accident are identified as Japiywar alias Albert Chiru (39), son of Late R Jatakshong Chiru of Bungte Khulen, Sadar Hills Senapati who died on the spot and while the other who succumbed to his injury at Shija is identified as Asin Kabui (42), of Rengpang Nungba . The third person is identified as Khukhup Haokip (35), son of T T Haokip of New Lambulane.

The bodies of the two deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) for post mortem.

IMPHAL, May 6: A press release issued by theLions Club and Lioness Club of Imphal East said that Lions Club and Lioness Club of Imphal East in association with the Socio-Economy & Cultural Upliftment Centre, Pangei organized a One Day Mega Health Camp on May 5 at the Naorem Bihari College, Khundrakpam from 9.00 a.m. till 4.00p.m. Seven specialists assisted by 15 medical officers of different specialities and 14 para-medical staff conducted the camp in which 1,500 patients were given treatment while medicines worth about Rs. 80,000 were distributed to the patients. 10 eye-patients were identified for free IOL operation at JNIMS, Porompat. The release further added that the Chief Medical officer, Imphal East had provided a NRHM  Mobile Van having ultra-sound & E.C.G. etc. during the camp.

It alleged that the news item based on a release from the PIB (Defence Wing) is totally made up and is part of the ongoing fake drama being carried out as propaganda by the security forces. Pointing out that the `service number 886 and batch number 13` does not exist in the service record of the UNLF, the release said that Service number 886 only matches late Ahanthem Ngamthang@Chalamba, son of A. Menjor of Phumlou who was killed on July 16, 2002 and that the said service number is not included in batch number 13.

IMPHAL, May 6: The proscribed Maoist Communist Party Manipur has in a press release claimed its hand in the bomb explosion at the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) campus. 

A press release of the banned outfit signed by its Publicity and Propaganda secretary comrade Nonglen Meitei said that the bomb explosion at the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) campus was carried out by Maoist Communist Party Manipur as a part of its “class struggle.”

It alleged that the doctors at RIMS are not performing their duty properly as a result of which, many poor people like farmers and labourers had to suffer a lot.

While demanding resignation from the Director accusing him of not performing his duty well, the outfit has also also announced a general strike on May 17 from 5 am to 5 pm.  

The general strike will be suspended immediately if the doctors start performing their duty well and the Director resigns, the release added.

IMPHAL, May 6: Anganwadi workers and helpers under the Social welfare department of Manipur government staged a protest demanding payment of due honorarium for 11 months.

The protest which began at around 11 a.m. was staged under the aegis of All Manipur Anganwadi workers and helpers union near 2nd MR gate, Imphal. Participants of the sit-in-protest also took out a short rally participated by around 500 Anganwadi workers and helpers calling for the payment of honorarium dues for 11 months, reinstatement of Anganwadi workers and helpers who were removed from their service as they were 60 years old and increase in retirement age to 65 years, provision of packets of khechri for children.

Representatives of the Union met with officials of the Social Welfare Department after the protest was staged till 1 p.m. At the meeting, the officials of the Department told the protestors the Director is out of station along with the concerned Minister AK Mirabai Devi and set to return on May 12. The officials assured the protestors that they will inform the said concerned authority on their return of the demands raised by the Union and urge them to fulfill the demands.

Manipur Government has failed to act in the same way over the Silent village arson incident and instead it has termed the incident as an issue between two villages, the statement further alleged and asked if there is any law, allowing people to burn down houses and the properties of another neighboring village on the pretext of any land dispute.

IMPHAL, May 6: The Women Action for Development has strongly opposed and condemned the uncivilized act of a police personnel of the Narcotics department in which a child rights activist Mala Lisham was attacked and terrorized by the state force, showing his masculinity and gun power. “We need to critically analyse whether the gun used by the accused is issued by the government for the protection of the public, and if so why is it being used in targeting lives of innocent ?”, the release asked.

The release went on to add that Mala Lisham is one of the few persons working tirelessly against all odds for the cause and welfare of the children of Manipur. “It is very unfortunate that the someone who is active to save many lives has herself become the victim of violence,” the release said while terming the act as “one of the extreme case of gender based violence which exist in our society.” It further pointed out that the motive behind the act needs to be investigated properly and a charge sheet framed as soon as possible, so that befitting punishment should be given to the accused.

Meanwhile, the Women Committee of United NGOs Mission, Manipur (WC-UNMM) has said in a press release that it strongly condemns the life attempt and gun firing on Ms. Lisam Mala, the chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Thoubal District on May 3, at around 1 pm at Thoubal Haokha, Thoubal while she was on her way to attend a meeting at Thoubal DC`s Office.  It continued that It is an inhuman and cowardly act of terror and violence against women in particular and human race in general while demanding that the culprit should be punished according to the land of law as earliest as possible to bring an end to such kind of inhuman act in future.

The Women Committee of UNMM also condemned the murder of Mrs. Phurailatpham (0) Neena Devi (45) wife of  Ph. Brajagopal Sharma of Bishnupur Ward No.2 by her brother in law  Brajakeshor Sharma on  May 1 and the mysterious death of the 18 yr daughter of Angou Khan of Yairipok Houden Keirangbi on May 4. It also appealed to the  concerned authority to take up strong actions and mechanism to end and stop any form of Violence Against Women and Children in the state.
