Mail News Service
London, Aug 6 : Magnificent Mary defeated her Tunisian foe outscoring her in all the four rounds. She now enters the semi final of the London Olympics and confirmed a medal. Mary Kom fought with a strong defensive strategy against Maroua Rahali of Tunisia to win her 51 kg quarterfinal bout on Monday and assure India of its fourth medal in the London Olympics.
Though the opening two rounds were close, Mary took a sudden lead with a flurry of right punches in the third. It was enough to have her return to her guard in the fourth and final round to seal the match 15-6, a scoreline which showed the dominance of the 29-year-old.
She began with some good defence as her opponent Rahali had better height and reach advantage. Mary continued to maintain a safe distance while figuring out what Rahali could offer.
Taking her chances, she became aggressive. Rahali used more of her left punch. Height was a crucial factor in this match and Mary solved the puzzled by closing in and scoring valuable points.
The 29-year-old five-time world champion won her bout 15-6, having dominated from the start. She exhibited a great show in the ring, winning each four rounds to claim an unbeatable nine-point advantage. She has assured herself of a historic Olympic medal with this win.
Mary was on the defensive side in the first two rounds which she won 2-1, 3-2 respectively. In the third round, the crowd got to see the better of Mary Kom as she thumped back-to-back punches at her opponent who was taken by surprise.
The 11-4 scoreline in the third round was the decisive lead that Mary needed as it is never easy to erase a 7-point deficit without a knock-out.
The last round was all about keeping her cool although Mary at times got tempted to punch her opponent at the back of her head inviting caution from the referee. Still she managed to clinch the round with a 4-2 score and the final margin of 15-6 was certainly a convincing way to get into the semi-final.
Earlier Mary Kom defeated Karolina Michalczuk of Poland 19-14 cruising into the quarterfinal of the 51kg category with ease. The victory was celebrated throughout the country and crackers were blasted at her home state.

Guwahati, Aug 6 NNN: A semblance of normality has returned to Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) areas where violence erupted on Sunday after a brief lull. The indefinite curfew imposed in those areas continued on Monday.
On Sunday, fresh incidents of violence were reported from Chirang district with miscreants torching several houses. Four bodies were also recovered taking the total toll in the communal violence since to 75 since July 20.
The violence could not spread following prompt action from 104 fixed police pickets in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts. These pickets had been deployed to ensure the safe return of the relief camp inmates to their respective villages.
“Indefinite curfew imposed on Sunday after fresh incidents of violence has been persisted with on Monday to offset more trouble. There have been no reports of arson or killing in the last 24 hours,” said Assam Police inspector general (law and order) LR Vishnoi.
On Monday, chief minister Tarun Gogoi also reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures in the violence-hit areas of western Assam. “All our energies should be channelized towards providing succour to the displaced people on a war footing,” he said. He also passed on instructions for the deputy commissioners of the affected districts to decongest the existing relief camps by opening new ones to prevent outbreak of diseases.
Further, the chief minister instructed the public health engineering department to ensure one latrine per 100 relief camp inmates and one water pump for every 250 in order to ensure hygienic conditions. Health officials were also instructed to set up separate camps for pregnant and lactating women and children.
Monday also saw a four-minister team visiting the trouble-torn BTC areas besides Dhubri district to take stock of the situation and assess the conditions of the relief camps.
It can be noted that on August 1, intelligence officials had accused that a new Muslim based militant outfit called United Muslim National Army (UMNA) was suspected to be behind the ethnic clashes between the Bodos and the Muslims in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.
This new Muslim militant outfit has been floated in Assam with its agenda to have a separate administrative area for the Muslims in Assam consisting of 13 districts with four in Bodo Territorial Council (BTC), a well placed source informed Newmai News Network in Guwahati recently.
Meanwhile, over 75 people have been killed and nearly 5 lakh people are affected by the clashes in western Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

HPC issue discussed

Aizawl, Aug 6 NNN: The remark of Mizoram home minister R Lalzirliana to “forgive” Hmar Peoples Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) Chairman, H.Zosangbera who was arrested from Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport on July 17, has attracted criticisms from other political parties in Mizoram.
On Monday, Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) leader R Lalawia said only the President of India can forgive a criminal officially.
The Mizoram home minister had given a statement in the state assembly recently.
R Lalzirliana said that the HPC (D) leader and his outfit will be forgiven any time they come back to the mainstream and even said that even the criminals can be forgiven. T
Reacting to this comment, the ZNP leader it is surprising and embarrassing over the remark of Lalzirliana and said that it is not the state government and even not the Home minister who has the authority to forgive the criminals; it is only the President of India who can forgive the criminals. “There is always the limit, and it is really a matter of shame that leaders of the state often speak of what is beyond their power,” said the ZNP leader.

Equal treatment a must

Nothing surprising and it does not evoke much anxiety. It also does not torment the already troubled mind of the farmers, when a portion of the canal of Khuga dam was depressed. It has to happen. It is Manipur. More so when the work is done under the IFCD Government of Manipur. It is quite natural the work done by the contractor cannot be investigated properly by engineers for, the engineers themselves are not so sure about the release of the bills of the contractors. Penniless contractors whose bills have been withheld run here and there without getting the benefits. Nobody hears their voice. It might be for these reasons that the contractors defy all norms of construction of retaining walls. The depth and breadth of the retaining walls are always reduced and quality of the work is something not to be talked about. IFCD lacks commitment it cannot say no to the fresh proposal handed down to the department to take up fresh project without earmarking proper fund for the works. Now engineers are hiding. They avoid meeting with the contractors as they cannot clear the bills. In the recent past engineers were kept under suspension when a portion of the retaining wall of the Nambul river depressed. That was unethical and unprecedented. No engineer should be punished when anything happens because they are handicapped to investigate the construction work. They cannot assert when the contractors defy construction norms. Because they know the gullible contractors will not be getting money for the work done. So free hand has been given to the contractors. Consequently quality has been compromised. It is time new Minister of the IFCD gives serious thought on the matter of pending bills rather than taking up fresh work. The well being image of the society has been tarnished when the contractors are kept unhappy by holding back their bill. Unable to get back the amount spent on the construction work they show the tendency to incline on the unwanted elements to do a favour for them. That is called nurturing nexus between contractors and unwanted elements. PWD complex where major engineering departments are cloistered has been fortified. This is an attempt to foil the entry of unwanted elements into the complex. Union Government desires private Government partnership in taking up developmental works. Delay in clearance of contractors’ bill goes against this spirit. Understanding the problems facing the educated unemployed youths, it is time the state Government takes up steps to give benefit to this section of the people. A Government exists to serve the interest of all people not only its employees. If the employees are getting pay regularly why should not the section of people, who survive working under the Government as contractors, enjoy equal benefits? One should get better perks and perquisites according to the nature of responsibility taken by one and also according to the volume of work done by one. Nobody will say anything on that. The concerned departments have no right to withhold the payment of the contractors. Attention of the highest authority is drawn to look into the matter. Get the blessings of the neglected lot by doing something for them.
