Jacob Abraham, Deputy Director, PIB, Thiruvananthapuram.
A landmark-in-the-making in the Indian IT scenario of India, Technocity of Thiruvananthapuram is fast evolving into the hub of global convergence with the expected arrival of big-time brands of the industry to set up their production centers, training campuses, development institutions and assorted other initiatives in the picturesque technopolis in the Pallippuram area of Thiruvananthapuram district.
“Our schedules are in the right track with enquires pouring in from across the world seeking info on investment potential and possibilities”, observes CEO-Technopark.

The shaping up process of Technocity is currently in progress, with the masterplan ready for take off, offering state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities for intending investors. Technocity, when fully commissioned will be an integrated IT township, spread across about 432 acres, which includes not just space for IT/ITES firms but also residential, commercial, hospitality, medical and educational facilities. The project will be a self-dependent satellite city, which would not strain the resources and infrastructure of the city of Thiruvananthapuram.
The units in Technocity will include a wide variety of companies engaged in a range of activities, such as Embedded Software Development, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Process Control Software Design, Engineering & Computer-aided Design Software Development, IT Enabled Services (ITES), Process Re-engineering, Animation and e-business. The Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management–Kerala (IIITM–K) and The Asian School of Business (ASB) which has already started operations for its campus in Technocity, while IIITM-K is in the process of setting up their campus in the 10 acres of land allotted to them. Technopark is developing a 50 acre Special Economic Zone in Technocity.
Technopark was set up under the auspices of Electronics Technology Park, Kerala, an autonomous body under the Department of Information Technology Government of Kerala. The park is home to over 240 companies employing more than 32000 professionals. Technopark’s aim was to create infrastructure and provide support required for the development of high technology companies.
The park is growing steadily both in size and employee strength. Park centre, Pampa and Periyar were the only buildings in the beginning. The total land available with Technopark is about 771.54 acres.
The land available with Technopark for phase one, phase two and phase three is about 326.54 acres leaving the rest of the land to Technocity. Technopark has periodically added new buildings such as Nila, Gayathri and Bhavani. With the inauguration of the 850,000 sq.ft. Thejaswini in February, 2007, Technopark became the largest IT Park in India. It
has become the single largest source of employment in Kerala, with over 32000 people working directly in 240 companies in the facility itself and creating Rs. 2000 crore turnover with export earnings of Rs. 1977.32 crore during 10-11.(PIB Features.)

The thought of crossing Wangjing to Heirok road brings to mind nothing but speed breakers that hinder smooth running of vehicles. As the number of hump raisings on the road has increased beyond permissible limit so much so that at the end of the road either at Heirok or Wangjing a vehicle requires a proper checking. If the vehicle is old and rusted the body will crumble before covering the stretch. There should be a limit in keeping the number of speed breakers on a particular road. On this particular road locals compete in having large number of road blocks in their area considered to be their domain. They compete in raising the height of the breakers also. If the driver winks the vehicle jumps like in the race. Imagine the plight of the fellow riders in the vehicle. Earlier Tiddim road had a jigsaw speed breakers near the airport but it was done away with when a top executive of the country visited Manipur. Since then speed breakers on the national highway had been removed. The idea of speed breakers controlling the speed of the vehicles sounds funny. Unsurprisingly Manipur required the visit by the top executive of the country to know the drive on the road having so many speed breakers is bumpy and one does not feel comfortable travelling on such road. No vehicle will drive fast on the road that is not properly maintained. There is no reason as to why citizens of the state should demand improvement of the road if they want vehicles to move at snail pace. Scatter some 40 mm stones and sprinkle water instead of black topping. That will control drivers speed. Making the road smooth and then adding speed breakers expose the dilemma crippling the mind whether one should step in to development or return back to the past era when the bullock cart did the service of transportation. No accident occurred when bullock carts were used as means of transportation. Travelling on the road abound with speed breaker is time consuming. A stretch, which could be crossed in five minutes, requires 10 minutes. It also increases fuel consumption. But the question remains who will be able to instil in the minds of the locals about the futility of keeping too many speed breakers on the road. We have a Minister and top level police officers all from Heirok. They use the road frequently. Their views on the matter will shape public opinion. Such a very smooth road all black topped giving bumpy rides to the fellow passengers are unacceptable. The matter should receive the attention of the concerned authority. After all PWD exists to smoothen road. These speed breakers are as disturbing as the road filled with pot holes. Like the jigsaw breakers getting erased from Tiddim road after a visit by the Prime Minister the speed breakers on the Wangjing Heirok road too need to be erased. Locals should not complain against it. In attempting to negotiate with the breakers more accident is likely to be caused.

Mail News Service
Imphal, Aug 29: The Committee on the Protection of Natural Resources in Manipur (CPNRM) stated that the three public hearings organized by the Manipur Pollution Control Board, government of Manipur at Jiribam, Parbung and Nungba Town on 30th July, 8th and 17th August 2012 respectively for petroleum exploration, drilling and allied activities in Jiribam, Churachandpur and Tamenglong has been a complete failure as the indigenous communities to be affected by Petroleum Exploration in Manipur expressed strong objections to petroleum exploration and drilling by Jubiliant Oil and Gas Private Limited, (JOGPL) a company based in Netherlands. CPNRM expressed gratitude to all communities for expressing their voices against petroleum exploration in Manipur.
It opposed filing of First Information Report (FIR) to communities objecting Petroleum exploration at Nungba on 17th August 2012.
There are serious violations and immense points of condemnations in inviting communities for environmental Public Hearing and later threatening them with arbitrary arrest and detention for expressing their rightful opinions. The filing of FIR only indicates that the Government of India, Govt of Manipur and the profit mongering JOGPL only insists on undemocratic and militaristic forms of development. Introduction of forcible means of development and relying on police and military to subdue the peoples voice will only infuriate the communities to resort to all means of possibilities to defend their land and resources and to stop all petroleum exploration.
As the communities fully expressed their opposition to the public hearings against Oil Exploration and drilling and allied activities in Manipur, the Government and Jubilant Energy should respect the wishes, sentiments and desire of the people to protect and defend their land for their present and coming generations and immediately halt all process for oil exploration and drilling and allied activities in Manipur. The Government of Manipur, JOGPL and the Government of India should abide by the official written declaration at the Nungba Public Hearing to cancel public hearing future public hearing on petroleum exploration for block 1& 2 once and for all in Manipur. The Committee would like to reiterate our opposition to the signing of Production Sharing Contracts, Petroleum Exploration License
Agreements between the Government of India, JOGPL and the Government of Manipur in 2010 without the knowledge and consent of indigenous peoples of Manipur. CPNRM will oppose any move of the Government to sell any resources and land of Manipur to any profit mongering groups.
The CPNRM would like to call upon the Government of India, Government of Manipur and the Jubiliant Energy to Stop all Oil and Gas Exploration, Drilling and allied activities in Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Jiribam in Manipur and also to Immediately withdraw the FIR and other cases lodged against communities attending the Nungba Public Hearing on 17th August 2012, failing which will invite stern mass communities actions from all communities for which the government of Manipur and India will be solely held responsible for any untoward incident said Pamei Tingenlung, Convenor.
