However, it Churachandpur district headquarters, the Manipur southern district which is the home district of MC Mary Kom, people got frustrated when there was a power cut last evening. The people turned mob and started ransacking the Churachandpur Electricity department office at Tuibuong, located about a km away from the district police station. The angry people swarmed towards the electricity office and started attacking the office between 6: 15 pm to 7 pm. They were frustrated as their long wait to watch the semifinal of the 51 kg category of boxing played between local favourite MC Mary Kom and Nicolas Adams was not fulfilled as the power supply played a spoilsport.
The mob broke the keys of every room and turned their ire on the furniture, chairs , iron cupboards which contained files and ledgers .
Most of the tables and chairs were damaged while keys of some iron chest were broken and were pushed down on the floor
Window panes of the office were smashed and the frame were also pulled out with files spread on the floor of the office buildings and things became a jumbled-set.
At the EE’s room the round table was pushed down , the table broken with everything broken
Talking to this reporter the assistant engineer of the office Khampu said electricity supply regulation is not in their control but controlled by system controller from Imphal and they cannot do anything on the matter.
Meanwhile Devendro Singh of India lost in men’s fly weight (49kg) quarterfinal bout against Paddy Barnes of Ireland 23-18 to bow out of the London Olympics.
Devendro Singh, who had a win courtesy RSC in the round of 16 started the bout as the aggressor going in the same vain as his earlier bouts but the experienced Irish Boxer Paddy Barnes kept evading the Indian’s left and right swings. While Devendro Singh relied heavily on his movement and straight punches, Paddy Barnes back paddled well and got in the crucial punches with good hooks.
By the end of Round one Paddy Barnes led 7-5 owing to the Irish boxer’s accurate punches as opposed to Devendro’s wild swings.
In Round 2, Devendro continued to rush towards Paddy but this time Paddy also went for the kill and a healthy exchanges of left-right combos saw both Devendro and Paddy earning points.
Devendro, though was docked two points by the referee for an attempted head butt on Paddy. Both boxers went into a clinch as the taller Barnes went forward and Devendro needlessly struck with his head. Paddy continued to extend his lead with accurate punches. The Irish took the round 10-5.
With a lot of ground to cover in the final round, a tiring Devendro again went for the wild swings dropping his guard as Paddy Barnes seemed happy to duck and evade the Indian.
Paddy was warned for excessive ducking but Devendro did not employ the uppercuts till the last minute of the game which earned him couple of points at the end. Devendro took the round 8-6 but lost the bout 23-17.

Better road communication need of the hour

Representatives of the people take keen interest in repairing of lanes and by-lanes while discarding major roads passing through their respective constituencies. Asked about the lackadaisical attitude shown to the state highways by all concerned their reply is straight major roads are under the care of the Government. Who will take care of these Leikais and moreover voters demand repairing of their Leikais only not the major road. Government therefore should take the initiative of repairing major roads, they opine. Major roads in Imphal are the faces of the state. Face lift needs to be provided. The main road at Sagolband is in a pathetic condition. Construction work that was started had stopped mid way with the pot holes as big as pond appearing in the middle of the road near Tera bazaar. Whose order the department is waiting for to begin repairing of the road. Who should tell the engineers of the concerned department to begin work on repairing of the damaged road? Tera bazaar is not at far off place. Dr. Loken in his term as MLA started repairing of Sagolband road. Buildings at the roadside were razed to ground to expand the road. Close on the heels of the dismantling of the building the roadside was dug out and filled with gravel. That was a wonderful work. But the work having been stopped mid way the area, which could not be filled up with gravel have remained like moat making it breeding ground for mosquitoes. Perhaps the contractor cannot be convinced of making prompt payment for the work done or he had been denied payment for the work done that the work had been put to grinding halt. Should not the contractor be called up and asked to continue the work. Fast moving vehicles find the potholes in the middle of Sagolband road a threat to life. Negotiating with these potholes has become a problem to the drivers. Similar uneven road exists at Lamphel side also. It is mindboggling the concerned department can leave such important roads passing through Imphal in pathetic condition. Lamphel area road near police station and another connecting Thangmeiband and Uripok remain under water round the year. The middle portion of these roads have depressed so the waters have accumulated in the middle portion of the road. By sprinkling gravels the middle portion of the roads can be raised. A confusing trend is sweeping. Engineers wait for the elected representative to dictate terms for repairing of the roads while the latter shirk the responsibility of bringing up such issue before the Government. Consequently who cares attitude is shown to the major highways of the state. If the Chief Minister of Manipur makes a whirlwind tour of these major roads in Imphal areas he will be able to know which portion of the road requires immediate attention of the Government. These roads cannot be neglected. These roads are as important as other major roads connecting different parts of the state. Having well maintained road enhances the status of the Government. Let somebody hear the suggestion.
