IMPHAL, November 15: The last rites of the six mowed down by a speeding car on Diwali midnight were performed today following an understanding reached between the families and the driver of the car Md Riyaj.

It is also learnt that Riyaj who was arrested along with his car by the police has been granted bail.

Around 45 minutes past midnight on Diwali night, a Santro car driven by accused Md Riyaj of Sora drove straight into a group of people engrossed in a dice game on the roadside at Babu Bazar, Thoubal killing five on the spot and leaving seven injured of which one succumbed the next day.

A source informed IFP that the understanding was reached between family members of the six killed, those injured and the accused.

It is learnt that the Accused Riyaj will pay Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those killed and that he will look after the treatment of those injured.

Rs 1 lakh each was handed over to the families and the remaining will be handed over before the Shraddha ceremony of the six, informed the source.

Post mortem of the bodies were conducted at the JNIMS morgue.
