Unknown miscreant throws grenade in a busy lane at Ukhrul

Today around 5:45 pm, an unidentified miscreant threw a hand grenade at Viewland Bazar, Ukhrul.

The grenade landed near the shops of one Mangal Mahto, a native of Sheohar Zilla district in Bihar, and Gopal Khuman of Thoubal district, who runs clothing stores in the building nearby Viewland Baptist Church, Ukhrul.

Fortunately, the grenade did not explode.

According to one bystander, the incident occurred when vendors at the roadside were packing their things and getting ready to go home. The lane was still crowded with people, many of whom were Christmas shoppers, the person added.

Until the time of filing this report, as informed by SDPO Ukhrul, the grenade was still lying in the building, and bomb disposal squad from Imphal are being awaited for safe disposal of the said bomb.

Furthermore, the said area has also been cordoned off and is being manned by Ukhrul police and Assam Rifles.

As of now, motives behind the attack are uncertain, but some locals suspect that it must be an act intended to dampen the festive mood in the district.
