Need of the hour is good leadership in Manipur, says Th Radheshyam, CO 1st MR

With the theme ‘Insights to Smart Career Choice’,  Dynamic Manipur in collaboration with  LRSINDIA Pvt Ltd organized its continuing talk event series ‘Inspiration Episode 7’ as part of 12th EduXpo 2015 at Lamyanba Shanglen, palace compound Imphal here.

The talk event is held with the mission to inspire and foster learning among the young minds of the state through the motivating and idea-focused talks from distinguished personalities in varied fields.

Renowned resource persons in varied fields like Mr. Roshnikumar Yambem, MD, Globizs Web Solutions, Mr. L. Mangi Singh, Retired Senior Architect, PWD,  Prof. Ibohal Meitei, MIMS, Manipur University, Mr. Naoba Thangjam, MD, Classic Group of Hotels, Mr. Th. Radheshyam Singh, IPS, CO, 1st MR, and  Dr. Thangjam Homen, Asst. Prof., MB College, Imphal delivered resourceful talk to motivate the young minds gathered at the highly packed hall.

Speaking on the occasion, Commanding Officer of 1st MR Th Radheshyam said what the need of the hour in Manipur is good leadership and sincerity in all aspects.

He said that the state is in chaos and distress since there is no good leadership. To bring about good leadership, the present youngsters should work with sincerity. One righteous leader can make a difference by accommodating accountability in his or her sphere of service.

He advised the students to work with full determination and self confidence to attain the desired target of life. The present youngsters should manage to contribute their part while rectifying the wrong systems prevailing in society when they get matured, he said.

Dr. Thangjam Homen, Asst. Prof., MB College said that the primary aim of education doesn’t mean to get a white collar job, but to inculcate or develop logical thinking among men. Students should have a conceptual clarity on why they are learning education.

Nowadays, getting government job in Manipur have become a matter of luck with many unemployed youths are on the rise and competitions becoming high. Despite all this fact, students should not lost heart. There are many job opportunities to lead a respectable living. What is the most needed thing is the quality of “fully educated and competent” which every student should posses so that they can develop a power of logistic thinking to find out better ways in life, he said.

Prof. Ibohal Meitei, MIMS, Manipur University said that it is just within few frictions of seconds only that an athlete wins a 100 mts splinter race. Time is very precious but we don’t care for wasting time. Life is competitive alike the athletes compete to win in a race.  Success is not possible to those who waste time unused.

While choosing career, students should find out the weak and strong points he or she has. Identified weak points should be converted to strong points. He advised the students to expand their vision in the back drop of the Act east policy.

“Kerala state in India is developing in economy although the state has no rich resource mobilization except some sectors like tourism and fishery sector. It is because that most of the educated people of the state working many foreign countries like Dubai, Middle East and Gulf countries are bringing in much foreign exchange money to their home state. Keeping this in view, Manipuri youths should also think of working in foreign countries to contribute to the state economy”, Ibohal said.

Architect Mangi said that although architecture is an exciting profession, there is less scope for income earning through this profession in the state. An architect usually takes much time and energy to give a well designed drawing. However, local people are unwilling to pay much to the extent of what a professional architect expects. Some of my fellow architects living outside have earned good income through the profession but I am still poor. I can’t even give a finishing touch to my house which began construction 20 years back, said Mangi. Someday, this profession will have bigger scope, added he. 70 years old retired Architect Mangi was the man who designed famous western Kangla gate, Nupi Lal complex, Kanglasha installed inside Kangla, Hotel Imphal, Hotel Mass, Imphal west DC office, Sanamahi Kiyong being constructed at Nongmaiching hill and other important buildings to his credit.

Mr. Roshnikumar Yambem, MD, Globizs Web Solutions mentioned about the fast changing dynamics of IT, that any IT knowledge getting outdated within 2 years. He spoke about his passion for IT and how he struggled in his student days because of the unavailability of proper internet. In Manipur, there is hardly any proper IT job post in the government sector and as such, many IT engineers end up being data entry operator and computer operator. Nevertheless, there are scopes of IT engineers advancing their career as employment with government or private sector, self employment and IT based entrepreneurship.

Minister Govindas exudes confidence of positive changes in Sericulture

IMPHAL, April 20: The production of various varieties of sericulture cocoons has seen an increase which is a sign of farmers taking interest in sericulture, said Sericulture minister Govindas Konthoujam

IMPHAL, April 20: The production of various varieties of sericulture cocoons has seen an increase which is a sign of farmers taking interest in sericulture, said Sericulture minister Govindas Konthoujam today.

Addressing the inaugural of a four-day long Cocoon Buyers and Sellers Meet, 2015 at the Project Management Complex Sangaipat, the minister said farmers are the most important section of the society in the country.

He said the farmers need to be aware of the scientific methods in order to improve their yield.

The Sericulture department will initiate extensive farmers`™ training soon, he said adding that the training will aim at improving the quality of cocoon production in the State.

He said he was himself ready with department officials including the principal secretary, director to ensure transparency and accountability in projects and programmes undertaken by the department.

The minister also exuded confidence that people will be able to see a lot of positive changes in sericulture in the State soon.

Promising that there will be no middle men between the government and the farmers in provision of schemes and other items, he said any farmer can now directly approach the director, principal secretary or the concern minister himself if the farmers have any complaints against the officials of the department.

He said the only demand of the farmers for long have been proper implementation of schemes in the State.

The farmers, he said have to play vital roles in the success of sericulture projects.

The minister also announced a reward of Rs 5000 as incentive for the best cocoon farmer.

Both the hills and the valley have the potential for good production of cocoon, he continued.

Sericulture director, Waikhom Ibohal said the meet was organised so as to provide a proper platform for the buyers and the sellers to meet.

This will enable the farmers and their potential clients to meet directly and do business upfront, he said.

During the past some years, cocoon production in the State has witness improvement. There has been increased in production in all districts, he said before adding that this has been possible only because of the efforts of the farmers.

The production of cocoon varieties like double hybrid, bi-volatile and leimaren have increased in all districts, he said.

The department was expecting around 400 kg production from the Imphal West farmers but the farmers managed to produce around 1400 kg, he said.

The director added that Imphal East district farmers have produced around 400 kgs which is also above their target while Thoubal farmers have produce around 300 kgs.

The plan was to conduct the meet in two phases `“ April 20 and 21 for the farmers from the valley districts and then for the hill districts later on April 24-25, however farmers from Senapati and Kangpokpi arrived today since their cocoon had all matured due to proper feeding.

This is a good sign, the director said.

IMPHAL, April 20: Authorities of the Catholic schools refused to resume classes for fear of the threat after students bodies and parents associations appealed for the normal classes to resume starting today.

The students of Catholic missionary schools return home dejected as the school could not resume normal classes even after student bodies and parents`™ association have appealed the school authorities to reopen the schools from today.

The Catholic schools in Manipur valley have been closed since April 1 following an indefinite ban imposed by Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC) group.

The imposed ban has affected at least five schools that accommodate a total of about 17,000 students.

Following appeals made by the Democratic Students Alliance Manipur to the guardians to send their children to their respective schools and to the school authorities to open all the catholic schools concerning the academic career of the students but the schools authorities refused to resume classes for the fear of the threat .

H. Budhichandra, assistant teacher of Nirmalabas High School, speaking to media persons said, `We want to reopen the schools but we do not know what will be the consequences once the schools resume classes. We cannot do anything until the ban is lifted by the particular outfit.`

He further said that the school will have a meeting and urged the government to provide security and if the government is responding to our grievances and extend help the school authorities will definitely resume its classes.

While speaking to the media Warthing Jajo, a guardian of a ward of Nirmalabas also said that, `The silence of the government at this hour is strongly condemnable when thousands of students lost the right to attend schools and violate right to education.`

She further questions why showed indifference to the Catholic schools students, the students are also the pillar of Manipur.

The students of Nirmalabas High School before leaving for home gathered at the gate and shouted slogans; `We want to study` `Don`™t disturb education`.

One of the student of the school(NBS) said, `Please reopen our school for the sake of our future and our syllabus would not be covered, but our exams is knocking at the door`.

The Guardians of the student of St. Joseph School located at Sangaiporou in Imphal West district also staged a sit-in protest demanding to let their children free from disturbances and urged the government to make security arrangement at the school.

A guardian said if the schools authorities cannot do anything on this matter, they should find an alternative arrangement for the students studying in Catholic schools or provide Transfer Certificates (TC) so that the students can shift to other schools. The guardian also expressed great disappointment against the government silence.

AMSU to form human chains to guard schools

IMPHAL, April 20: The All Manipur Students`™ Union (AMSU) would form a `Human Chain`™ by April 22 to safeguard the Catholic Schools in their effort to resume normal classes if

IMPHAL, April 20: The All Manipur Students`™ Union (AMSU) would form a `Human Chain`™ by April 22 to safeguard the Catholic Schools in their effort to resume normal classes if the schools fail to reopen by April 21.

Expressing serious concern over the chance of the students losing academic career studying in catholic schools, AMSU president Sanasam Subhashchandra during a press conference held at AMSU, head office stated that the Catholic Schools have stopped their classes since April 1 and this is not the time to remain as silent spectators over the issue.

However, if the schools cannot resume normal classes by April 21, then the student body will form `Human Chains`™ if necessary around each of the Catholic schools to guard them and enable normal classes to resume.

AMSU president further said that it is important for all the guardians of the State; others allied individuals or organisations to extend their support and cooperation for the Catholic schools to reopen.

The AMSU president later added that the demand of the particular UG group may have been considered if it was placed not only against the catholic schools but the demand was enforced only to the catholic schools but not to other private schools.

The student body (AMSU) further appealed to the particular UG group to review their decision or arrange an alternative means so that it will not hurt or harm the academic careers of the students as there are about 17000 students missing their classes due to the impasse.

Subhashchandra explained that the decision was taken by the students`™ body not to challenge any individual, group or organisation but for the welfare of the students.

As the State has no industrial resources and others means to bring up the society except through Human resource the students should be given the right to education and make education a disturbance free zone he added.

He lamented that although there have been many appeals for the schools to resume classes there has been no assistance from the government`™s side.

AMSU also appealed to all the Catholic schools authorities for the immediate resumption of normal classes by April 21.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Students`™ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has said in a press release that classes in some catholic schools were resumed today following a prolonged closure.

The student body has also expressed belief that the remaining catholic schools will also resume classes from April 21 without further delay.

DESAM has appealed to the parents and school authorities to actualize this belief and for all schools to continue normal classes from April 21.

The organisation also strongly disapproves of teachers who did not come to school on time and has appealed the teachers to come on time from next day as usual, it said.

History as Selfie

This is not meant as a pun. This is not about territorial ambitions either. Nor is it a hint or wish for the arrival of a cultural expansionist agenda. On the other hand, this is just a loud thinking on what it is that would make a greater Manipur than what it is today `“ greater in the sense of quality, not quantity. Post-colonial Manipur is in its mid 60s and as a full-fledged state of India, only a few years younger. Although their numbers naturally would be on the decline as the years pass by, there are still many who saw what it was like before this period and therefore able to make a comparison between then and now, and we wish they would do this from the heart and make it known, so as to provide more accurate reference points in any assessment of the present. In the absence of these, perspectives are prone to become distorted, especially in times of jingoistic nationalism. A recollection of some of the well known human development indexes would be valuable. As for instance, what were the conditions of the roads, health facilities, public services, infant mortality, maternity health, basic education etc? What was the nature of the economy and therefore the living conditions of the people in the hills and the valley? What was the level of security the average individual enjoyed? The last question is interesting, and if Steven Pinker`™s contention in `Better Angels of Our Nature` is to be believed, the modern times are the safest for the individual, for he or she is three to four times less likely to die at the hands of another human now than in days of yore. Pinker`™s theory has been contested by many well known critics, saying while this may be true of the West, it is not so for those places the West wages war on. All the same, generally, there is much truth in what Pinker contends. Even a few decades ago, many localities even within Imphal were not safe for strangers. Today, this proposition sounds absurd. It is then time, not just for the older generation, but the current one too, to sit down and look back as well as ahead, weigh its past with its present and consider realistically what it wants the future to be, or more pertinently, what it wants the future to be for their children and grandchildren.

It is with these thoughts that we ruminated on what might constitute a `Greater Manipur` and we are convinced this has to begin first and foremost with a journey to the past, and confront the reality of the time. It is amazing that such journeys have been made in Manipur`™s world of art. The most memorable is the metaphoric and almost Freudian journey Ratan Thiyam makes his characters take in his acclaimed lyrical allegory, `Nine Hills One Valley`. In this play, the director awakens the seven Maichou, the writers of the Puya of yore, and make them assess the present world. History must not be allowed to become a selfie of the nationalists, although this is a predominant trend. It would be worth recalling how in neighbouring Nagaland, former chief minister, S.C. Jamir`™s attempt three decades ago to look beyond a selfie history of the Nagas, in a booklet called `Bedrock of Naga Society` was violently attacked by nationalists in the state. Manipur will be no better, as the extreme revivalist movements in the present days will bear testimony. There would have been many great things in the place`™s past, but to believe everything about the past was glory, and that salvation lies in a return to this `glorious`™ past, would be pushing the contours of this selfie towards the grotesque.

We must admit we did have the slogan of `Greater Nagaland` in mind in coming up with this thought, but definitely not as an adversarial foil. In fact, on this question we do feel, the two entities must soften towards each other, and in the process discover commonalities and the needs for, or the inevitability of, peaceful coexistence under whatever the political circumstance history lands the two, and others in the region, in. However, given the nature of the tides of the time, we do honestly believe there are certain, definite, predetermined lines beyond which no political dialogue by the two, individually or collectively, can yield meaningful goals. The question of sovereignty for instance, as the prolonged Naga peace dialogue is proving to be. The intriguing question is also, what exactly should constitute sovereignty in the present context? If freedom is desirable, what is it that we want to be free of or from? Oppressive politics, corruption, poverty`¦?

Rice, textbooks for students found misappropriated by school authority

IMPHAL, April 19: Textbooks and several quantity of rice meant for students given by Education Department, Government of Manipur under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA)

IMPHAL, April 19: Textbooks and several quantity of rice meant for students given by Education Department, Government of Manipur under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA) have been found misappropriated by school authority.

Levelling the allegation during a press meet at Khabeisoi Primary School near 7th MR, Imphal East today, Syed Nawaj Khan, president of All Manipur Minorities Students`™ Union (AMMSU) said that as announced earlier, the union has been inspecting schools in the state to bring quality education which is necessary.

He claimed that 12 bags of rice to be used for mid day meal and textbooks in Khurai Sajor Leikai High School were found ceased to use during an inspection visit to the school by the union.

“The rice bags and textbooks have been seized by the union`™`™, he said.

Alleging that a sum of Rs 6 lakh meant for mid day meal to be used during 2010-15 in the school had been also found swindled, the president of AMMSU contended that headmistress of the school was found filled up by a teacher without getting approval from the concerned ZEO.

“Surprisingly, mid day meal in the school is being prepared by a peon even though there is a reserved cook to look after it. One of the school teachers was also found working as a clerk instead of teaching the students,`™`™ he said.

Saying that the school authority was already asked by the union to produce the entire amount of money that had been siphoned off today but failed to do so, he made it clear that the school authority should produce the misappropriated money before April 25.

He further announced that the money will be handed over to the Education Minister.

Taking serious note of the wrongdoings committed in the school, the president of AMMSU urged the government to take up strict action against the corrupt teachers and authority of Khurai Sajor Leikai High School at the earliest.

JD (U) extends financial assistance to family of deceased old age pensioner

IMPHAL, April 19: The Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Manipur, president has today extended financial assistance to the deceased old age pensioner who recently died while waiting for her turn to collect old age pension at first Manipur Rifles parade ground.

Moirangthem Tombi, president JD(U) and Len Gangte, general secretary personally visited the residence of the victim, the late Irengbam Purnimashi Devi, situated at Khagempall Panthak Ningom Leikai Imphal West and hand over the financial assistance.

Speaking to media person on the sideline during the visit, M Tombi termed the incident very unfortunate that an elderly woman had to meet such a fate just to collect a paltry amount of Rs. 4800 of her share of pension.

He held that the present government must take full responsibility of the tragic incident adding that they urged the government to take pre-cautionary measures to avert similar incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, extending his warm welcome to BJP national president Amit Shah, who is on his maiden visit to Manipur, Tombi said that the people of Manipur expected more from Amit Shah.

He regretted that the BJP failed to give any concrete assurance of the promises made by BJP in the run up to the recently concluded last LS Poll like repealing of the AFSPA and to safeguard the boundary and integrity Manipur.

Amit Shah`™s speech did not reflect any of the promises made by the BJP instead it focussed on campaigning for ADC election due to be held on June 1. However, the JD (U) does appreciate and welcome the schedule made by BJP to send its Union Ministers to the North East states, he said.

Amit Shah`™s appeal made to the people to give corruption free governance in Hills district if BJP candidates win the ADC is another political gimmick like it did during the LS poll, claimed the JD(U) president.

Tombi urged the people to cast its vote for JD (U) candidate if the people want change and free from centre`™s false promises.

IMPHAL, April 19: MLA, Z Kikhonbou Newmai has inaugurated five schools at Tamei sub-division which were constructed under Surva Siksha Abiyan (SSA) in accordance to the initiation taken up by state government towards the development of education sector.

The inauguration function was held during a tour programme conducted from April 16 to 18. The MLA was accompanied by Executive member of ADC-TML and member (ADC-TML) Hatling Doungel. The inaugurated five schools which were constructed under SSA are Langnom Village Primary School, Pangmol Village Primary School, Thingtungbung Primary School, Kolbung Primary School and Ngalunphei Primary School.

In connection with the inaugural function, a public meeting was held at Kaimai, Oinamlong, Phaiton area. As chief guest of the function MLA of Tamei, Z Kikhonbou Newmai said that the Tamei AC which is under Tamenglong District was in a deplorable condition earlier, but with the taking up of various developmental works, the area has developed to some extent.

The developmental works were taken up as per the initiative of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, he expressed.

Karmic Justice

What goes around comes around. This must be the received wisdom of practically every society, for the saying is prevalent with some variations in practically all of them. In Hinduism

What goes around comes around. This must be the received wisdom of practically every society, for the saying is prevalent with some variations in practically all of them. In Hinduism and Buddhism, and indeed most other eastern religions, this is a most pronounced belief. Everybody`™s life is a consequence of his deeds of the past, or Karma as this cause and effect phenomenon of life is described in one word in these two religions. Karma ensures nobody escapes the consequences of his deeds, good or bad. The same belief is there in other belief systems too, even the most agnostic. Therefore, there is an undeclared faith everywhere that `as you sow, so shall you reap`™. Come to think of it, this is not just about religion or any faith in a divine order. The entire edifice on which scientific enquiry rests is built around this axiom. Newton`™s third law of inertia says very much the same thing: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. If this law was not true, Robert H. Goddard`™s theory of rocket propulsion would have been redundant, as American newspapers mockingly reported his achievement in 1926. No space travel would have been possible, and that would have been boring. Imagine no `Star Wars`™ or `Star Trek`™. But on the other hand, there would also have been no ballistic missiles or indeed the explosive energy that drives bullets either. This would have been an interesting situation, for then even the dreaded Armed Forces Special Powers Act, AFSPA, would have been toothless, and equally, the chattering classes who bare their fangs and let out terrifying roars every time the word AFSPA is mentioned, would have left with only mews and purrs.
In politics too this principle is proving equally applicable, as the state BJP president, Thounaojam Chaoba Singh is finding out the hard way. From all indications, his past is now catching up with him. The news report of a press conference by ex-minister and Communist Party of India MLA, Ningthoujam Mangi, which appeared in many newspapers yesterday, ostensibly timed to coincide with the arrival of the BJP national president Amit Shah in the state, demonstrated this. The report said the High Court of Manipur has on the previous day disapproved the bid to transfer land to a bogus housing society Kombirei Housing Co-operative Society Limited in 1996, when Chaoba was the revenue minister. The report said Mangi himself had at the time taken the lead role in opposing the land transfer move, and that he discovered most of the beneficiaries of the land transfer were close relatives of Chaoba. While Chaoba was in power, nobody could do much, but two decades later, the issue has returned to haunt the man and his ambition. It remains to be seen what Chaoba does to defend and save himself from a fall from grace, or more pertinently, what the BJP central leadership does on the matter, for a lot of the stake of the BJP in the state will now depends on the nature of these actions. The question is, would Chaoba be purged or else would he be allowed to continue to lead the BJP`™s battle in the upcoming ADC election and the Assembly election in 2017?

While it is entirely up to the BJP to decide on what course of action it takes on the matter, what comes across as amazing is the brazen manner in which Chaoba was hurling corruption charges on his opponents, in this case, the leaders of the ruling Congress. Didn`™t he believe in the wisdom that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones, for one return stone can shatter his own house too? The charges he has been making all the while were probably all true for it is almost a thumb rule today in Manipur that all those who have had a taste of power have invariably been made corrupt. Politics and corruption have today become almost synonymous. As somebody who has been on the other side of the power divide, would it not have been prudent for him to have been a little more restrained in his allegations? But this is a free country and everybody is free to make his own decisions. We as laymen however can only await justice, karmic or legal or electoral. Yes, we also eagerly await the day politics in the land is dissociated from corruption, and instead comes to be identified with statesmanship.
