The traumatic experience of MPSC Asst Prof recruitment, 2014

NH-2 is now unmistakably in a highly deplorable dilapidated state that a distance which would normally take only one and half hour to travel by any motor vehicle takes more than three hours. Innumerable potholes beautify the highway beginning from just beyond Sekmai. But I felt a bit relieved when somebody told me that the government had actually thought of renovating the highway but because of the torrential monsoon rains the highway development work has been suspended for some time; hopefully the highway will be developed to a status deserving its name very soon when a new favourable climate sets in a few months from now. Perhaps, we should not lose hope and become totally pessimistic. But one thing comes out quite glaring that the Indian National Highway 2 has been lying pitiably in a state of utter neglect on the part of all who are responsible of taking its care.

The rise of new hopes with the advent of a new BJP-led coalition Govt in Manipur

It’s been only few weeks since the formation of the new BJP led coalition government, yet some very encouraging developments or forward movements have unmistakably taken place. The bringing to an end of the months long economic blockade was one that brought a huge sigh of relief to the people of Manipur although many more dialogues and discussions may have to take place to bring about long term solutions and mutual understanding in the land. In line with his announced priorities, the Chief Minister also made a special attempt to resolve the more than two year old stalemate involving the death of nine civilian protestors in the anti ILP bills in Churachandpur with the mortal remains of eight of the victims still lying in the morgue. The negotiation is yet to resume and an amicable solution to the impasse is yet to be found. Another spectacular event was that of the CM’s mammoth entourage that went to Ukhrul which was accorded sumptuous welcome by the denizens of the town. Yet another noteworthy development that the new CM undertook was his visit to the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) located at Makhan. The CM must be having heaps of businesses and issues to deal with one after another in the days ahead. A number of projects were initiated by the previous governments, some of which had been completed and accomplished while some others still remain unable to see the light of the day for quite some time.

The need to do away with corruption to build a prosperous welfare society

One thing that we often hear in Manipur is the complaint about the existence of high level of corruption. We do, however, also sometimes hear some kind of implicit denial of the existence of this complex and subtle monster or fairy. In fact, corruption does exist almost everywhere where men exist; but the difference seems to be in the degree and level of its practice. The corruption that we’re encountering in our land of jewels too has developed considerably and has attained a remarkable level of sophistication and complexity. We may wonder and ask whether this thing is involved in almost every activity or in only few areas and matters like job recruitment and development works like road, dam, building constructions etc. And again, we can also ask whether it is practised by only few individuals but shunned by the majority. We can also ask who are more guilty – those who insist to pay and get something done or those who accept and insist on being paid the desired price for special favour which nowadays allegedly amount to lakhs of rupees which may cross 10, 15, 20 lakh rupees? We can also ask whether everybody pays or takes the palm greasing backdoor/window entry money. Or are the illegal undercover corrupt activities indulged in by only a minority but denounced and decried by the majority of the population!
