In an interview featured in The Hindu, Moirangthem Goiuramangi, a native of Sekmai Manipur, expressed the need of grass root level training to improve the quality of Indian Football.

The Manipur native who currently played for Pune City FC opined that the atmosphere in ISL was completely different, as most of the players had played at the highest level and their match-awareness were more.

Moiranthem Gouramangi made his debut for India way back in 2006. Capped 71 times by the national team, the young Manipuri, a product of the Tata Football Academy, plied his trade in the National Football League, then in the re-branded I-League, and now plays in the Indian Super League (ISL) for Pune City FC. The 29-year-old spoke about this transition, and the role of ISL in shaping India’s football future.

Original excerpts of the interview featured in Hindu:

This is your second year in the ISL. How different have the experiences been as compared to your I-League days?

I don’t think we can compare the two. We can’t forget the contribution the I-League has made. I would say, without the I-League there wouldn’t be ISL. Indian football is in transition. One can’t completely depend on the ISL to turn things around overnight. There are lots of positives though. I-League has its limitations budget-wise. There are financial restrictions. It is not as big as what we are seeing today [ISL].

But the ISL has brought in foreign players, and coaches with different styles. In that sense, how has the on-field game evolved?

Technically better. In I-League too we had foreigners. But in ISL, the atmosphere is completely different. Most of them have played at the highest level and their match-awareness is more. So is the tempo of the game. This kind of exposure wasn’t there before. But we [Indians] are not very far behind. We can definitely do well. But we don’t have the necessary structures in place. We need more grassroots-level training.

For a young Indian player, how beneficial can the ISL be?

I’ll tell you from my own experience. I have been to countries like Australia, Denmark, Ukraine. There, I had to train like a foreigner. I mean, I had to adapt to their culture. Now, everything is coming to our country. Our players need not feel lonely here. It’s a good opportunity and the younger generation should take it seriously.

Can you give a realistic time-frame for things to improve?

At least another two years [for some signs to emerge].

What has been the biggest takeaway for you from the ISL?

I am from the Northeast. I never expected to go to Mumbai, Chennai and even Pune — not so popular for football — and see 30,000 people come and watch us play. We never experienced this before. Bringing the crowds back to the stadium has been the biggest thing and the attendance is increasing day by day. Nobody wants to play in empty stadiums. I feel this is only the beginning [of better things to come].

IMPHAL, July 30: Owing to incessant heavy shower of rains for the last few days, large portion of pavements of the rivers flowing in the district, caved in, thereby causing artificial flood in the district.

The excessive water which flowed out from the rivers has also inundated many residential houses, vast acres of paddy fields and fish farms.

Due to overflowing of water from Wangjing River under Wangjing-Tentha Constituency, many roads, residential houses and paddy fields have been submerged, arising need for prompt intervention.

The Wangjing High School-Wangjing Houdamba Leikai Road had been totally submerged in water, affecting normal activities of the people residing in the area. As for Wangjing Tekcham Leikai, JCB vehicles have been put to use to let the overflowing water pass through paddy fields.

Passage through the RCC Litan Bridge built over the Wangjing River near the BSF Post at Heirok Part II, has also been breached due to strong current of the overflowing water from the river.

The bridge which connects Heirok Part III, Konaiton, Thamlai and Inganglok village was inaugurated on December 7, 2009.

Four wooden bridges built along the Heirok River have also been washed away by the flood water.

Since early morning today, residents of Wangjing SK Leikai came out in large number and tried to stop the overflowing water from entering the locality. They managed the task only in the noon.

MLA of Wangjing-Tentha Constituency Paonam Brojen visited the area to take stock of the disturbing situation. He accompanied with JCB and Tata Dipper vehicles to be used in blocking the water.

BSF personnel posted at Wangjing Tekcham, Councillors and Members of Wangjing Municipal Council Ward No 5 and 6, social worker Haobam Roben and members of Youth Volunteer Association also arrived to extend help in stopping the water from entering the area.

It may be mentioned that around 2000 acres of paddy fields and fish farms in Tentha village have been submerged in water flown out from Wangjing River following the heavy downpour of rains for the last few days. Many residential houses and paddy fields in Sangaiyumpham area have also been inundated.

Also, due to sudden breakage of pavement of Sekmai River, residential houses at Keirak, Wabagai Leirak Achouba and Wabagai Tera Urak have been submerged in water. Residents of the areas have moved out to safer places for taking shelter.

It may be mentioned that on the morning of July 24, residents of Awang Sekmai had found parts of the Sekmai dam constructed over the Imphal River under the River Lift Irrigation (RLI) Scheme under the Minor Irrigation department collapsed and carried away by the strong currents of the river.

IMPHAL, January 7: The Awang Sekmai Nongthonband Youth Club called a press conference today in connection with its road block imposed along the road connecting National Highway no 2 with the Sekmai Gas Bottling Plant since January 1 decrying the government`™s failure to act on its assurance to repair the road.

The road block had resulted in around 80 loaded gas bullets remaining stranded inside the LPG bottling plant.

The agitation will continue until the road is repaired, the club`™s spokesperson told media persons.

He said the road has been blocked for a week till today, however, the government continues to remain silent even though it was taken up only after the government to act on its assurance.

He continued that last May, both the Chief Minister and the local MLA had assured to look into their demand, which is yet to be fulfilled.

The government`™s silence on the issue is in total disregard of the public`™s emotions, he continued.

The club members also declared that they will never meet government officials and representatives until the road repairing work is started.

The Chief Minister and the local MLA should bear all responsibilities for any untoward incident arising out of the issue, they warned
