IMPHAL, Oct 14 NNN : The proposed indefinite economic blockade in Manipur has been deferred by three days following a fervent appeal made by Manipur education minister M Oken to the tribal student leaders on Sunday.
The Joint Committee of Hill District Students Organisation (JCHDSO) had proposed to impose indefinite economic blockade from the midnight of October 15 on all the national highways passing through Manipur demanding to open examination centres of Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) in the hill districts from this year onwards and also to avail the forms for the same in the hill areas.  TET exams are to be held on November 11.
The JCHDSO comprises Zeliarong Student’s Union, Manipur (ZSUM), Churachandpur District Student’s Union (CDSU), Senapati District Student’s Association (SDSA), Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) and Naga Student’s Union, Chandel (NSUC).
On the reported technical problems the state government has not been able to conduct the exams in the hill districts from this year onwards. The tribal students are peeved by the this stand of the state government and hence announced to impose indefinite economic blockade.
A day before the proposed imposition of the economic blockade the JCHDSO held another round of talk with the state government represented by education minister M Oken which was also participated by tribal MLAs including Z Kikhonbou (Tamei), Preshaw Shimray (Chingai) and Alexander Pou (Karong) but no solution was arrived at.
Education minister M Oken reportedly requested the tribal student leaders to wait for three more days as he wants to consult the matter with the state chief minister and his colleagues. Complying the minister’s request the JCHDSO has deferred the proposed agitation. “However, failure to fulfill our demand will amount to invite indefinite economic blockade and we will no longer talk with the government then,” warns D Stephen, convenor of the JCHDSO. “We cannot compromise this matter,” asserted Stephen.

Solve Naga problem before election : Rio

DIMAPUR, Oct 14 NNN: “The government of India should find solution to the Naga political issue before the Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the date for the next assembly election of Nagaland,” said Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio just before his departure for New Delhi today at Dimapur Airport.
Nagaland assembly election is due early next year.
On Sunday, a 20-member Joint Legislature Forum (JLF) of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly had left Dimapur for New Delhi by an Air India flight to press for the early settlement of the Naga political solution.
“We want that the government of India should solve the vexed Naga political problem before the state assembly election and to press the Central government we are going today to the national capital,” stated Neiphiu Rio.
Both the rulling NPF leaders and the Opposition Congress party legislators under the banner of JLF have gone to New Delhi and they are expected to camp there for the next one week.
“We will meet the Union home minister and if possible we will be meeting the Prime Minister too,” disclosed a member of the JLF while talking to reporters at the airport.
The JLF which has been floated few months ago by the 60 MLAs of the Nagaland legislative assembly cutting across party lines had already camped in the national capital some three months ago and met many Central leaders while pressing for the early settlement of the Naga peace talk.
On October 9, chief minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio had said that it was hopeful that the government of India and the Naga outfits would take advantage of this opportunity to find an amicable settlement.  “If this opportunity is missed, I don’t know whether such opportunity will come back to our people during our lifetime,” Neiphiu Rio was quoted as saying by a Dimapur newspaper.
At the backdrop of this picture, Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had commented that the settlement pertaining to Naga political issue would be brought about by March next year, the time before the next assembly election of Nagaland.
