Fresh Attacks Claim Multiple Lives Across Communities

TFM Report

FIRST INCIDENT: Attack on Teikhang Kuki Village (August 31)

At least three civilians were killed, including two women, and one person injured in a fresh attack carried out by unknown armed miscreants on Monday at Teikhang Kuki village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. Officials confirmed that three houses were reportedly set ablaze during the assault.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 7:40 am on Monday when unidentified armed attackers descended upon Teikhang Kuki village, located in Kangpokpi district bordering Tamenglong district. The deceased have been identified as Hoikhoneng (20), Nemneichong Lhujem (52) — both female — and Lamtinthang (35). Lamtinthang’s father, identified as Seilun, sustained injuries in the attack, though officials noted that the full details and total number of injured individuals are yet to be ascertained.

Witnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions from the area during the assault. Police officials confirmed that they have not been able to verify which group or individuals were responsible for the attack.

This attack followed a Thursday incident in which four civilians belonging to the Naga community were killed during an alleged ambush carried out by armed miscreants along the same Imphal-Tamei road corridor. The approximately 120-kilometer roadway connects Imphal and Kangpokpi to Tamei and Tamenglong.

Escalating Tensions Between Communities

The violence is part of a broader pattern of escalating tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities in the region. Kangpokpi is a Kuki-Zo dominated district, while Tamenglong is predominantly inhabited by the Naga community.

The current cycle of violence traces back to May 13, when twin ambushes carried out by unknown armed miscreants at two different locations — one in Noney district and another in Kangpokpi district — killed four individuals, including three church leaders and one Naga man. This incident sharply escalated tensions between the two communities.

On the same day, 48 civilians belonging to both Naga and Kuki-Zo communities were taken captive by both groups in retaliatory actions. After nearly a month in captivity, all hostages were eventually released. However, six Naga men were later found dead near Kharam Vaiphei, a Kuki village in Kangpokpi district.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been investigating the case and, as part of their inquiry, arrested four individuals — including a couple — on two separate occasions in July.

SECOND INCIDENT: Suspected Retaliatory Attack on Liangmai Naga Villages (September 1)

In the aftermath of Monday’s firing incident that claimed three lives, unknown armed miscreants launched an attack on Tuesday against three Liangmai Naga villages in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district along the Imphal-Tamenglong road. Officials confirmed that at least 30 houses were set ablaze and one villager sustained a bullet injury.

Kangpokpi police reported that the incident occurred at approximately 4:00 am on Tuesday, targeting three Liangmai Naga villages: Tapon Khullen, Tapon Khunou, and Makui Pipuram in Kangpokpi district.

A senior police officer told India Today that additional security forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) along with its CoBRA unit, assisted by Manipur police, have reached the spot and launched a search operation in and around the area. The officer added that the attack was followed by gunfire that lasted until approximately 12:30 pm.

During spot verification, police found at least 30 houses, vehicles, and properties damaged during the arson. However, when India Today contacted Kangpokpi police for further details, officials stated that the exact number of damaged houses and properties is yet to be fully ascertained.

Casualty Figures and Ongoing Investigation

According to reports, since May 13, a total of 17 individuals have been killed during separate incidents involving both Kuki-Zo and Naga communities. The August 27 ambush alone claimed four Naga civilians, while the August 31 attack resulted in the deaths of three Kuki civilians in the surrounding areas along the Imphal-Tamenglong road in Kangpokpi and Tamenglong districts.

Notably, despite multiple attacks and retaliatory strikes, no group has officially claimed responsibility for any of these incidents. Security forces continue their search operations in the affected areas as authorities work to restore peace and prevent further escalation of violence in the region.
