Imphal, Aug 8 : Magnificient Mary Kom ended her glorious Olympics campaign by winning a bronze medal as she went down to Nicol Adams 6 – 11 in the semi-final bout in the women’s 51 kg category at the London Olympics 2012. My whole country was hoping for me to win a gold medal, and I am sorry I have not come back with that,” said Kom after the bout.
All eyes are now on L Devendro who will fight on Aug 9 wee hours and by the time this news is read the result will be known to all. Just before the bout Sachin Tendulkar said Mary Kom is a five-time World Champion, a mother to two five-year old twins, is India’s best chance at an Olympic Gold! An idol and an inspiration to everyone of us. Let’s wish her all the best!”
Mary Kom prior to the bout posted on her facebook, “Thank you everyone for your prayer and support. Pls continue to pray.” Adams, ranked No 2 in the world for flyweight boxing, lived up to her favorite tag with a display of strength and accuracy, outplaying Mary in each of the four rounds. The current European Champions at three-time World Championship silver medalist dominated her Indian opponent in the ring with a flurry of powerful combinations. The scores were 1st Round: 1-3, 2nd Round: 1-2 3rd Round: 2-3 4th Round: 2-3
“She is a terrific champion,” Adams said prior to the fight, “and it’s going to be tough. But I’m going to have the height and reach advantage and will try to use all my attributes.”
The Guardian said “Kom is to women’s boxing what Manny Pacquiao is to the men’s equivalent: a charismatic fighter so good that weight some times is irrelevant. A tiny atom of a boxer, she has moved up two divisions to qualify for these Olympics but, while she might not bring her power, there can no doubt the ring savvy of someone who owns five world championships.”
Daily Star said “Nicola Adams has the advantage as Mary has had to jump up weight divisions.”
Mid-day said “Hailing her the magnificent Mary said, “The fighter known as Magnificent Mary, boxing as a flyweight, had to overcome a three-inch height disadvantage to see off Poland’s Karolina Michalczuk.”
BBC traces her journey from the troubled land of Manipur to five times world champion. It says, “Anyone who accuses Kom of being a woman in a man’s world will wish they had kept their mouth shut.” “It is amazing to see the transformation when Kom steps into the ring. She stops being the gentle, mother-like figure and becomes a tiger.” Her illustrious journey of becoming World Champion five times and getting a bronze medal in the Olympics have won millions of heart throughout the globe.
