IMPHAL, March 20: The United National Liberation Front, UNLF, has claimed responsibility for the bomb warning served to Miss Lourembam Diana daughter of L. Jten and L Pramo of Yengkhom Leikai.

A release of the underground organisation said Diana was served this warning because she has been using the name of the UNLF to fool people to pay her money on the promise that she can get jobs for them in the Home Department and Social Welfare Department of the Manipur Government.

It said the UNLF has come to learn that from one particular individual she has taken Rs. 14,11,000.

After taking the money, instead of getting the promised job for the individual, she claimed that the money had been handed over to UNLF commander, Bobby. The party also came to learn that Diana`™s family members were also accomplices in her fraudulent activities, the release further said.

The release said, Diana also told the person she took the money from that Commander Bobby worked under Shekharjit, Khetrajit and Achanba of the UNLF, and that she herself was a subordinate working on behalf of the UNLF under Bobby.

It also said investigation revealed that Bobby was nobody but her own elder brother.

The release said, in regards the case, the UNLF had sent words to Diana and her family to appear before the UNLF and clarify matters on March 3, 2015, as the UNLF does not believe in awarding punishment without trial.

Diana and her family however did not pay heed to the UNLF summon. This being the case, the UNLF was compelled to serve them the first warning, and the grenade explosion at her residence had precisely this purpose, it added.

The UNLF has now served Diana and her family to again appear before the UNLF on March 15, and it this summon is again ignored, the UNLF will award severe penalty, the release said.

PREPAK, KCP(MC) greets people on Meetei Sajibu Cheiraoba

PREPAK greets people on Cheiraoba IMPHAL, March 20: The People`™s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, PREPAK, in a greeting to the people on the occasion of Cheiraoba, said in a press

PREPAK greets people on Cheiraoba
IMPHAL, March 20: The People`™s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, PREPAK, in a greeting to the people on the occasion of Cheiraoba, said in a press release that the festival is important as it pertains to culture, economy and politics of the place.

It said the festival is a testimony that Kangleipak has been a nation state from very early times, and if the tenets of this festival is kept intact, the nation state will prosper.

The release said the festival refreshes the bondage between the society and the individuals, thereby securing the foothold of the nation state.

The release said the festival originated from the time of King Leinung Lonja Pakhangba and has been celebrated through the generations, and with each successive king, the festival made incremental changes, it said.

It said on this day in the past, the nobles in charge of Wangkhei Pana, Khurai Pana, Khwai Pana and Yaiskul Pana, went about on horsebacks ringing a bell tied to a staff and announcing the start of a new year. This tradition earned the festival its name.

During Meidingu Kiyamba (1467-1508) the tradition changed slightly, and instead of the nobles of the four panas, only one man was entrusted with the ceremony of announcing the new year, it said.

It said in recent times, Hindu Cheiraoba had come to be practised, and this is one of the reasons for the deteriorating standard of economy and politics of the place. Kangleipak lost its market for indigenously produced goods, and therefore became subservient to foreign economy, it added.

It said this is all the more reason why all Kangleicha must mend ways and think of preserving the pure traditions for a return to glory. This is a duty of all Kangleicha, the release further said.

KCP(MC) sends Cheiraba greetings
IMPHAL, March 20: The KCP(MC) in a press release today said its commander-in-chief, Nongdrenkhomba, wished the people of Manipur on the occasion of Sajibu Cheiraoba, saying this one of the most important festivals of the Meiteis.

The release said the festival has been celebrated from the time of Meigdingu Pakhangba, but got its name during Meidingu Naophangba, the seventh king in line after Meidingu Pakhangba.

It said according to Cheitharol Kumbaba, Meidingu Naophaba in 439AD had his men tie a bell on a stick (Chei) and go about swinging it to announce that from the next day, it would be a new year. The name Cheiraoba comes from this practice, it said.

Manipur People`s Party MPP Central Committee serves notice to Sovakiran to resign as the party president

IMPHAL, March 20: The Manipur People`™s Party, MPP, Central Committee Members served notice for the president of the party, N Sovakiran Singh, to resign from presidentship for violating the constitution

IMPHAL, March 20: The Manipur People`™s Party, MPP, Central Committee Members served notice for the president of the party, N Sovakiran Singh, to resign from presidentship for violating the constitution of MPP and giving the party to a bad image.

Speaking to media persons at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club today, a Working Committee & Central Committee Member, N Singhajit said that after N Sovakiran Singh assumed presidentship of the party in March 2013, the party has not been not able to make any impact on the political arena of Manipur, so much so that it could not even sponsor any candidate in the last parliamentary elections held in 2014 both for the Inner and Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituencies.

The party however had sent a representative for the Hiyanglam Assembly bye-election, 2014 sponsoring its vice-president A Amutombi Singh, but lost the election miserably despite the party reportedly spending around Rs 10 lakhs, he alleged and added that the outcome of the bye-election has damaged the credibility of the party badly. This was the election where MPP voters themselves have rejected the divisive policy of Sovakiran, he added.

He further said that after each election, it is a practice for every political party to take stock review of the election and look into what went wrong. But the MPP leadership was only interested in the account matters of the bye-election and passed the expenditure statement for the bye-election and utterly failed to take responsibility of the overall development of the party.

The bitter reality of MPP at present and it is further deterioration is regrettable but it is hoped the party would be able to reform and regain its pre-eminent position in the State, he said.

He alleged that the president of the party acted in the most despicable manner and took a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from the chowkidar Y Shanti.

Shanti`™s service was later terminated for his part in the allotment of two shops, B/1 and B/4 in the party`™s complex. It was also discovered the president made allotment of six shops, may be more, without the knowledge or prior approval of the working committee in violation of art XIII (2) of the constitution.

Shrinking Playfields

All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. But no work and no play would probably make Jack good for nothing. Once upon a time the local playfields

All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. But no work and no play would probably make Jack good for nothing. Once upon a time the local playfields everywhere in the state were teeming with life and activities after school and college hours. These undersized playgrounds, as we all know, have also been the anvils on which the sinews and grits of many international sports stars were forged. Today many of them are metaphorically dead, especially in the Imphal area. The grass on them which once could never be green because of too many feet trampling them perpetually, today grow in wild abandon on many. For now, instead of sporting activities, there are only young, idle, unemployed, unlettered boys hanging around, doing nothing except watching the road and wait for the day to pass so that another equally meaningless one could begin. Once upon a time they looked forward with impatience for the afternoon`™s bout of robust hockey or football, the choice depending on the vagaries of the seasons, but today if there is anything they eagerly await, it probably is Yaoshang festivities in March and Durga Puja in October, where they can play chefs de mission of the gaiety that accompany these functions in every locality.

Competitive sports bring laurels and reputations for the state, but sports even at the informal level, played with an appetite for fun by children and youth on village and suburban playfields, as any psychologists would testify, have always had much more far-reaching social functions. As for instance, these are vital spaces where children are introduced to their first lessons in socialisation, teamwork, besides harnessing their inherent aggression into productive competitiveness. Today, this vital social institution, like so many others in this beleaguered land, is beginning to decay. This is lamentable. On the one side, the quality of sportsmen and women produced from the state which have stunned the rest of the country repeatedly, predictably would decline if the trend is allowed to continue unchecked. But beyond this, a lumpenised society where there are no sublimated outlets for the natural instinctual aggressions can get implosive. We may already be witnessing the latter phenomenon in the unprecedented rise of violence, drugs abuse, juvenile delinquency and promiscuity, and in general, a widespread lack of respect for law or order in recent times. There can be no doubt the popular rhetoric that the shrinking number of playgrounds in Manipur may actually be directly proportional to the rise in violence and lawlessness, contains a great deal of truth.

If this is agreed upon, then one of the missions in the effort to check the deterioration of order and discipline in our society would be to reverse this trend. It must be generally acknowledged that sports do not have a meaning only at the formal level of medal hunt, but is also an indispensable safety valve to release instinctual aggression in a society and give these energies creative channels. In this effort, much of the responsibility rests with the communities which must activate itself to reawaken a tradition which has so successfully given them an unparalleled balance of mind and matter over the centuries. Besides the bigger sporting extravaganzas that the state gets to see, community level unofficial mini tournaments that were routine a few decades ago, must be revived. The government too has a big role in this. It must apply its mind and resources to ensure the success of this social enterprise. It must evolve a policy to assist and encourage village communities, in the case of the districts, and local youth clubs in the urban and sub-urban contexts, to develop their respective playgrounds and to organise tournaments at different levels. We definitely would want to see the state`™s many playgrounds come alive again. There is so much talk of there being no lasting military solution to violence and lawlessness. The predictable alternative so many prescribe by rote without substantiating is `a political solution`. Whatever that is, maybe a bit of unobtrusive social engineering, such as giving local playgrounds some added official and community focus, would also do wonders.
