In the ceremony, the groom and bride are made to sit on a bed placing their right legs on the Laogai which is on a plantain leaf. At the end of the recitation, the priest holds up the cock high and strangles its neck to death. The legs of the victim are carefully examined in search of good signs. The omen is read as: If the right leg is over the left, it is assumed as good and the couple will be blessed with a male child and long life. This position is locally known as Jat Longdai. If the left is over the right, it is also treated well and the couple will be blessed with a female child. This position is called Chagan Longdai. But, both the legs stop down lifelessly, it is considered as a bad omen. Holy wine is also offered to God for wellbeing of the couple in the days to come. It is a compulsory ceremony. Without this, the relationship is considered invalid. Anyone can make an inquiry and interference it. After this performance, they are recognized as husband and wife. Hence, after observing the above facts, it may be stated that marriage in Zeliangrong society is a religious sacrament.

Differentiate between self-respect & ego

Self-respect is conducive to a wholesome life. The key to its being useful in the real sense lies in one’s prudence in exercising it. In the right proportion, self-respect is good. But excessive and unjustified self-respect loses its sublimity and positivity. It becomes insidious and mutates into the negative, pernicious force called ego. Ego is the big, ugly sense of ‘i’ and ‘mine’ that leads to unnecessary complexities in life. It is inordinate self-obsession, narcissism, bigotry, rigidity and vanity to the point of being a pain for self and others. An unbridled ego can cripple one’s development in all facets of life. It can obscure one’s inherent virtues, eclipse one’s rationality and dwarf one’s personal growth. By and large, an egoist will be lacking in reason, sensitivity, clarity of thought, confidence, courage, transparency in speech and conduct and above all, a clear conscience. The sole aim of his life becomes the gratification of his sense of ‘i’ and ‘mine’. To prove his point, an egoist may go to any length — howsoever unethical or inimical to others. He is blind to reason. Deep down, he is weighed down by misery and discontent and is starved of happiness. Hence, one needs to keep one’s ego well in check and be wise in practising self-respect.

From Imphal with love

In the backdrop of the current state politics since it became fully-fledged state in 1972, distinctly reveals how different understandings of different identities influence and shape the state policy. Placing the Manipur political debates in social and historical context, it identifies major narratives within the Manipur grand political policy from which it emerged divergent interpretations of ethnic tribal identity. Through a discursive analysis of parliamentary debates, it highlights how the emergence of a “normal” political policy is caught between competing understandings of the different communities and the ambiguous role of the state, as both increasingly confront the uncertain trajectories of integration and ceding of tribal political rights and autonomy.

Disable for the disable person

The end of history & Manipur!

Manipur is not merely a political, territorial and demographic expression but it is also an expression of a history, a culture, a tradition, and an idea (which is beyond the comprehension of many). Oriental traditional values and beliefs are inseparably linked with the socio-politico-economic-cultural-patriotic strand of the people which are different from the occidental concepts of nationalism, sovereignty, independence and liberalism. The basic problem today is the continuing clash of philosophies & ideas. And to some extent we are also entangled in this conflict and confusion.

‘Celebration of freedom from bondage’

The name Pesach means, ‘Passover’ and refers to the account in Exodus Chapter 12, that when the Angel of Death killed the firstborn of the Egyptians, he ‘passed over’ the houses of the Israelites, which had all been carefully marked with a sprinkling of lamb blood.Another name of the festival,Chag Hammatzoth — the feast of the Unleavened Bread — grows out of the Biblical narrative of the manner in which the Jews were driven in haste out of Egypt and carried with them dough that was still unleavened. As a yearly rememberance of this emergency, the Jews were commanded to eat only unleavened bread for a period of eight days. The Passover is also known as Hag-Ha- Aviv, the Festival of Spring. The Passover is the first of the three main festivals of the Jewish Year.

Kurt Cobain: The phenomenon who attained Nirvana

Leafing through the pages of history in the world of music, legendary artists lived fast and died unusually young. Most of them at the unripe age of 27. Some mention may be made of Jimi Hendrix(the Guitar God), Janis Joplin(The Queen of Psychedelic Soul), Amy Winehouse(the soulful singer), Jim Morrison(The Lizard King) of the Doors, Ron McKeman of the Grateful Death (also known as “Pigpen”), Dave Alexander(a punk rock pioneer) of the Stooges, Kristen Pfaff(bassist for Courtney Love’s band “Hole”), Brian Jones(former guitarist of the Rolling Stones) etc out of which Kurt Cobain, the frontman of Nirvana is one. Each one of them made enormous contributions to music and were among the most talented minds of their time.

Commercialization of transgender community event: Time to make a call

Mobilising and organising the transwomen community of Manipur have taken decades of dogged grassroots activism and celebratory community events to reach out to as many transwomen as possible. Such events became strategically important in addressing the number of issues facing Manipur’s transwomen since they are much more effective in bringing the community together than the usual activism workshops or meetings.

It is believed that the nature of the spleen of a pig predicts the future; if the spleen bears blemish, it is a sign of bad omen, but if the spleen bears no blemish it is a sign of good omen. A healthy spleen is believed to have indicating prosperity in crops, livestock and population. After the rite, the internal organs (head, liver, lung and entrails) of the victim (Guak Babung) are buried at the same spot with ritual. It may be noted that the burial site is kept secret and nobody is known except the elder who performed it.

Wanted: Manipur River Protection Force

The hardly- one month-old newly formed BJP-led government in Manipur has delivered, so to say. The more-than – three – months old Economic Blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) on the Imphal – Dimapur National Highway (against the backdrop of seven newly created districts by the previous Congress government of Shri Ibobi) has been lifted – much to the relief of every Manipuri. Promise number one promised by the BJP in the run up to the recently held 11th Assembly Elections can now be said, to have been kept.

Sattriya Dance: Assam’s classical dance

The Majulii island in Assam is not only geographically unique but also culturally. The Vaishnavite mutts in that island, locally known as ‘sattra’, have been nurturing religious-oriented music and dance forms, including masked dance, as well as other traditional arts and skills. This dance form has now acquired, after centuries of refinement, the status of classical level.
