Why happiness can be so elusive

Man performs actions only for gaining happiness – sukhaaya karmani karoti loka – declare our scriptures. We all desire to be happy. But the harsh reality is that even though we have all the trappings of success from a worldly standpoint, happiness still seems to elude us. If we approach a teacher of Vedanta for a solution, he will counsel, “You have done enough, now you must know. You have performed many actions (karma), now it is time to gain knowledge (jnana).”

I am born to be ‘my best’ not be the best

Your parents or your elders must be asking for what you want to become rather than what you love doing? They keep trying to confined you only to the choices given by our society. You must have also heard them saying your hobby should be kept only for enjoyment and time pass. Why do they need to think that only doctors and engineers are career and singing and dancing are just hobbies? Singing, dancing, modelling, writing, orating, cooking too are challenging careers like doctors and engineers. If this society does not give you a place for your passion, just create one because nothing was there when the world was created, everything that seems permanent was once created by someone like you to fulfil his passion.

Koirengei Airfield: From airfield to a historical site or a parking space?

Few days back, I saw a news item in a local newspaper about our Hon’ble Chief Minister writing to the Prime Minister of India for handing over the Old Koirengei Airfield to the State Government. The Chief Minister envisioned developing the Airfield into a historical site under Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat Scheme. I believe that this is a visionary move. The land is very much required by the State Government. All of us should welcome the initiative of the Hon’ble Chief Minister. Personally, I feel that the reason cited for reverting the land back to the State Government, however, is unconvincing and may not meet the strict requirements of the Defence Ministry. Moreover, there can be other uses for the idle airfield, say for instance, to overcome certain pressing problems for the common good. Before I put forward my argument, let us have a cursory look at the history of airfield as well as into certain modalities involved in the transfer of defence land.

Time zone, time standard and daylight saving time for North East

Every place in the world has a Natural local time. It is calculated by multiplying the longitude by 4 minutes. However, time zones are decided by DST standards, international and national conventions. In India, both the westernmost Gujarat (68°E) and the easternmost Arunachal Pradesh (97°E) observe the same standard time zone.

LTC & travellling settlement

My daughter asked me whether the Prime Minister or the Chief Minister can avail LTC (Leave Travelling Concession). I said, “most probably they can, they are also government employees”. She further asked whether they actually claim. I told her, “not sure whether they claim or not, but years ago I read in the newspaper that one PM was in Kerala on a vacation”. Again, not very sure whether he avail LTC or not.

Computed Tomography (CT Scan)

What is a CT Scan?
CT scan stands for Computed Tomography. It is derived from the Greek words – tomos meaning “slice”, and graphein meaning “write”. It was formerly referred to as computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan. CT scan is an X-ray procedure that combines many X-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views and 3-D images of the internal organs and structures of the body. The first commercial CT scanner was invented by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield in United Kingdom in 1971.

Sorting through the paper trail of fake encounters in Manipur

What do 1,528 dead bodies look like? Three filing cabinets. In a dimly lit, dusty room in Manipur’s capital, thousands of files sit, marked or unmarked, as members of the Extra-Judicial Execution Victim Families Association (EEVFAM) sort them into various categories. These files pertain to the victims of alleged extra-judicial killings and fake encounters in the state since 1979.

Human civilisation is susceptible to change and change could gradually be brought about through human or natural action. The unflinching human propensity to achieve more and more within a short span of time is undeniable and has, so far, proved to be recalcitrant. In order to fulfill such an unsustainable want of stubborn perceptive, humans have made tough demands on the nature. Rapid industrialisation, deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, increasing number of free riders, etc.

Curses come home to roost

Sometime in 2010, three former cadres of the Manipur’s People’s Liberation Army were “recruited” by 3 Corps of the Indian Army based at Rangapahar near Dimapur (Nagaland), under its intelligence and surveillance unit that reports to its General Officer Commanding. The three had apparently been used by this “cloak and dagger” unit for activities that involved extortion, drug- and gun-running, all in the name of counter-insurgency operations under the cover of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. Then, one day the same year, the Army picked these three up from a place at 7th Mile in Dimapur and took them to Rangapahar where they were allegedly subjected to third-degree methods and, after they were killed, the bodies were dumped in a nearby jungle in Assam’s Karbi Along district. Phijam Manikumar, the brother of one of the victims, Hijam Naobi, reported the matter to the Nagaland police in Dimapur. A few days later, the Assam police informed their Nagaland counterparts that three bulletriddled bodies had been recovered from a forest in Karbi Anglong. The Nagaland police, in turn, informed the authorities at 3 Corps headquarters, who retaliated that they were immune under the AF(SP)A. The matter soon reached Army Headquarters when one Major T Ravi Kiran, turned whistleblower and wrote to his superiors at both Eastern Command and Rangapahar stating how, one night, the three Manipuris were shot dead by the Intelligence unit behind their officers’ mess. In his letter, Major Kiran mentioned how Colonel Gopinath Shreekumar, Commanding Officer of the “rogue” unit, was behind the abduction and killing and was assisted by a Major Rubeena Kaur Kheer and a Manipuri officer by the name of Nector.

Social injustice: High hurdle for new king

Our new Chief Minister I guess, knows well that public has beensufficiently corrupt to have floated such a deficient society we have been going through. Yet, from the end of our energetic CM and his team, things are hopeful. Now, the nature of the response from “We, the People”is one critical source to get the desired accomplishment from the new government. Have we acknowledged our own weaknesses that caused multiple social illnesses so far? Have we ever thought over leaving our sick behavior behind?Or will the new government have an iron hand; not less than Chinese Maoor Korean Chun Doo?
In fact, there are very visible flaw and fragility in general behavior especially of the contemporaryMeetei society. The indicators are – barbaric mobocracy, faulty festival of election, socially accepted corruption, brute traffic habit, offensive garbage disposition, men’s ogling eyes on women, senseless food wastage, etc. Couple of picking up here.
1. Encouraging the social smugglers: After any incident of bomb and gun attacks by the extortionists at the landmark buildingwhichturns out to be house of the well to do families or bourgeoisie, the local-women raise their voices displaying neighbors’ concerns launching sit-in- protests around the buildings.
It gives an ill indication of social response towards corruption and exploitation for it encourages public looters and social smugglers. Rather at such moment we have to remind the receivers of bombs and bullets – what they are receiving now is what they have just earned.
We, the locals are well aware of how the owners of the towering houses have accumulated so much wealth but what we ignore is the crimes the rich committed. This is us who showing a good amount of undue respect to such critical population of thieves, looters and law breakers.
Here, some questions are compelled to be raised – how has the breed of kidnappers and extortionists been surfaced on the soil? Why have they adopted such condemned means of earning? The best answer is the corruption although it is not of the lone factor.

Childhood hearing loss/deafness management

“A child who struggles to hear may also struggle to learn to speak, underachieve at school and end up socially isolated”
There are 360 million people in the world with disabling hearing loss. This is around 5% of the world’s population – 32 million of these people are children. Disabling hearing loss is defined as:
1. Adults (15 years and older): hearing loss greater than 40 decibels (dB) in the better hearing ear
2. Children (0 – 14 years of age): hearing loss greater than 30 dB in the better hearing ear.

The rise of new hopes with the advent of a new BJP-led coalition Govt in Manipur

It’s been only few weeks since the formation of the new BJP led coalition government, yet some very encouraging developments or forward movements have unmistakably taken place. The bringing to an end of the months long economic blockade was one that brought a huge sigh of relief to the people of Manipur although many more dialogues and discussions may have to take place to bring about long term solutions and mutual understanding in the land. In line with his announced priorities, the Chief Minister also made a special attempt to resolve the more than two year old stalemate involving the death of nine civilian protestors in the anti ILP bills in Churachandpur with the mortal remains of eight of the victims still lying in the morgue. The negotiation is yet to resume and an amicable solution to the impasse is yet to be found. Another spectacular event was that of the CM’s mammoth entourage that went to Ukhrul which was accorded sumptuous welcome by the denizens of the town. Yet another noteworthy development that the new CM undertook was his visit to the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) located at Makhan. The CM must be having heaps of businesses and issues to deal with one after another in the days ahead. A number of projects were initiated by the previous governments, some of which had been completed and accomplished while some others still remain unable to see the light of the day for quite some time.

Higher education and research is key to India’s progress

The Constitutional obligation is that Union government decides and coordinates the standards in higher education in India. The 7th UGC ROP is one such activity by the Union government. It is a difficult task to formulate a uniform national higher education policy. This is because India is a diverse country with great disparities in the infrastructure and academic standards as well as different social environments. This ten yearly national activity can transform higher education and research. Attracting the talented educated youth into teaching profession and research should be one of the objectives. Higher Education and research in India is lagging behind and should catch up with the best in the world.
