Great Expectations

Leader Writer: Hrishikesh Angom
The new recruitment norm of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan as introduced by the state education department is a welcome step towards building confidence amongst the educated unemployed youths. Thousands of undergraduates and graduates have recently been recruited based on their academic performance and an eligibility test, but without viva-voce or interview. Many candidates and the general people have raised doubts regarding transparency in the recent recruitment process.

Although the recruitment process of RMSA and SSA is not that proficient, the results could be written in golden letters in the history of Manipur. It has been a notion that government jobs in the state are purchasable at a certain specific rate, say ten lakh rupees for some grade-I post or five lakh for grade-II. Majority of our youths remain dejected while only some fortunate could procure jobs by paying the requisite amount. This has been in vogue for quite a long time. However, the new recruitment norm could be regarded as a “revolutionary” step taken up by the state government towards establishing confidence among the educated unemployed youths. Many proficient youths have been selected as graduate teachers without spending even a single paise. People have much faith in them that they will work with dedication to bring a radical change in the education scenario of the state unlike the previous years. Among those successful candidates, many possess master’s degree with consistent good academic records besides the prerequisite qualification of B.Ed. Notably some candidates are also PhD degree holders who are well-qualified to teach at the university level. This new recruitment policy has indeed rejuvenated hope and aspiration among the youths. Many might have languished if they were not given such opportunity this time.

The dark side of this new recruitment policy is that malpractices are still going on in some examination centres in far-flung areas. Mass copying, impersonation etc. are very much prevalent in these centres. Quite often, students from urban areas migrate to these centres and turned up with flying colours in examinations. In the midst of such practices, those successful candidates cannot be judged exactly as “qualified teachers”. There may possibly be many candidates who have scored high marks using all sorts of unfair means. Nevertheless, such recruitment policy is a step towards curtailing “corruption” in the most controversial department of education (schools).

It will be more appropriate if the authorities concerned formulate more proficient recruitment policy free from corruption and nepotism. The youths are the backbone of the society and hence healthy competition must be encouraged among them. Corruption has really disturbed the minds of our youths. Our society may perish soon if the youths are made to go in the wrong direction. The government cannot alone fulfill all needful things for the youths, but then things like corruption free job recruitment will at least give a ray of hope to them. Only RMSA or SSA will not work. There should be transparency in every competitive and job recruitment examination. RMSA and SSA recruitment should be an exemplary approach. The youths have much greater expectation than this.

The government should better keep up the aspiration of the youths by ensuring corruption free competitive examinations. The RMSA and SSA results are just a trailer. The full picture is yet to be presented by the government. This trailer has lit up the faces of many youths who have nearly lost faith in the present system. The government should think seriously on this matter. Corruption can be rooted out if the government employees are recruited in a more transparent manner. The newly recruited teachers will think twice before moving away from their responsibilities. The buyer-seller type of relationship between the government and the employees will eventually come to an end if the recruitment is made purely on merit basis. The youths will surely welcome the change with great expectations from the new government.

Archdiocese on closing of mission schools

IMPHAL, Feb 29: The chancellor of Archdiocese of Imphal, Fr TS Dominic has riposted that the closing down of four mission schools by Maoist Communist Party, Manipur on alleged “conversion of educational institutes into medium of propagation of religious activities” is unreasonable as the Catholic schools in the state have been imparting quality education to the students without any influence of religion.

He further maintained that the Catholic schools have not forced any student to become a Catholic through its educational institutions in Manipur. Forced conversion is not only against the spirit of democratic secularism but also against the nature and spirit of the Catholic Church.

No allurement in the form of admission to the school or monetary help is being used to convert any student or person, he noted.

Maoist movement will bring up proletarian society, asserts Manipur Maoists

IMPHAL, March 1: The regional bureau member of Maoist Communist Party, Manipur Sanathoi Meitei has… more »

IMPHAL, March 1: The regional bureau member of Maoist Communist Party, Manipur Sanathoi Meitei has stated that the Maoist movement has been a part of the international proletariat movement and the 150-year-old Maoist philosophy of the people’s struggle has been put into implementation in the state of Manipur.

The bureau member stated this to some media persons in an interview held recently along the Indo Bangladesh border.

He further asserted that the outfit has waged its revolution in the state on the basis of Marxism, Leninism and Maoism. In regard to the national liberation movement, several lives have been sacrificed whereas, the Indian government has been playing a divide and rule policy in order to create a sense of alienation among the different communities of the state and further to suppress the liberation movement .

Further, in the name of development, the masses have been lured with a materialistic outlook and thus thwart the revolutionary movement, he said.

After much deliberation, it was of utmost importance that the Maoist movement be propagated in the state and the same has been highlighted of the movement beginning August 10, 2011 in internationally. Following the trend in the state, it has been taken up by the Maoist to bring about a stop to the fake encounter incidents by instituting a ‘defense mechanism’.

The worth of an individual in a small community like ours is valued but the security forces think otherwise and perceives the killing of a person as only a ladder to getting promotion.

Arbitrary killings have been perpetrated in the state and the public is aware of the issue, hence the fake encounter incidents should be addressed and the public needs to counter such happenings.

It is indeed worthy for a revolutionary to sacrifice one’s life for the motherland but killing of a defenseless person is a cowardly act and if such acts keeps repeating, then the Maoist will not remain a mute spectator. The Maoist may be a fledgling outfit but has total commitment. The outfit has decided to identify those involved in carrying out the fake encounter incidents and award befitting punishment to the security persons involved.

Further, the outfit will also propagate a mass movement in the international arena against such wanton killings. Sanathoi Meitei appealed the masses to co-operate with the new democratic revolution of the Maoist.

THROUGH THE LENS OF THOUGHTS : IROM SHARMILA CHANU
By Ravi Nitesh

Irom Sharmila Chanu, a name that is fighting for a cause became a cause itself. People from all walks are now frequently coming together for her. Whether you see it through a scientific lense, through a political or social lense; this name has made its impact in such a way, that your lens will automatically become convert to focus on humanitarian points.

Sharmila

At the time, this fast started, it was started by a common face of the crowd, a face that had emotions and sentivity like any other, a body that had power like any other, a voice that had sound like any other. She started it without any extra achievement and extra talent but gradually she became the face for the fight. She has not started any new thing, because observing fast as a protest is an old way, but in spite of this, at present, there are many across the globe, who know her and support her through various ways. People lit candles on her name, people organize debates over her, people go to jail for her , people observe fast to support her, people write, sing, dance and paint for her. So we can see that this common lady shacked the minds and hearts of millions with her common tools.

What is behind this movement? Yes, it is honesty, dedication and the way of protest, that is non violence. Her fast never tried to harm anyone, instead her fast created waves of thoughts, her fast never started with thousands of persons but it reached to millions of population in a peaceful way, she never read sociological theories to move on the way, but her fast paved the way where sociologist are interpreting the theories. Irom, through her fast is saying many morals automatically. This fast is for the people of Manipur, for their safety , with a demand to repeal a controversial army rule of Indian government but now the way of protest has become the symbol of encouraging democratic values everywhere. This fast paved the way to understand the democracy and our role in a better way. This fast also paved the way to inculcate the values in millions of hearts. it is interesting to see that the rule that was made by intellectuals, is being challanged by common persons. The rule is for the people, and thus it should be left on people to frame the conditions.

Government, cannot ignore these voices for a long time. Eleven years are more than enough and now it is the time when government has to understand the broader view of the problem. The problem is converting in to conflict, a conflict to decide the rule. In this conflict, there are several stakeholders, in the form of various groups, but it is the time, when everyone can share a platform of solidarity with a flexible approach to provide a solution. Irom, is important for not only Manipur, but also for the country, she is not just a lady, she is a citizen, a sister and a daughter too.

At the time, when people are demanding for Irom and she has support of millions even from the non AFSPA imposed states; to find a fesible solution is never difficult, just a true will is needed from all sides.
