Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD) Press statement

3rd October 2014

A demonstration expressing solidarity to the courageous stand of the international boxer Laishram Sarita against injustice and condemning bribery and favouritism in sports was held today, 3rd October 2014, in front of the office of the Indian Olympic Association in New Delhi. In fact Sarita had dominated the semi-final bout against her South Korean opponent Jina Park, at the recently held 17th Asian Games, at Incheon in South Korea. But the judges had favoured the host country and had awarded the bout to her opponent. Sarita had applied for a protest but it was rejected on certain alleged technical grounds. The Indian officials had failed to help in her fight for justice. But Sarita continued with the protest and refused to accept the bronze medal awarded to her. During the medal ceremony she took the medal by the hands and hung it around the neck of Jina who have been awarded silver medal. The organisers took a dim view of Sarita’s action and initiated for a disciplinary action. Finally Sarita was forced to either accept the medal or face the consequence of some harsh disciplinary action. The issue of injustice, bribery or favouritism in the sports in general and irresponsible attitude of the Indian officials have been covered up.

MSAD Irabot Day Observation 2014 at New Delhi

30th September is the birth anniversary of the late pioneer Hijam Irabot (30 September 1896- 26 September 1951). Over the last many years, the day have been observed as Irabot Day by different organisations in their own ways. That there have not been any controversy vis-à-vis the different manners of observing the anniversary in the name of Irabot, have been due to the fact that Irabot was a pioneer in various fields.

In fact, Irabot had played pioneering role in various novel fields of Manipur. His roles may be summarized under the following themes; (1) literature and journalism, (2) art and culture, (3) sports, (4) social and economic reforms and (5) political revolution. What added more value while discussing the roles have been his livelihood. He was brought up as a destitute orphan. The then royal family were moved by his personality and had offered a princess in marriage. For that, he was offered properties and a prestigious job. However, he left those properties and job to become a revolutionary. He stood against various forms of oppression that were prevailing in the society: (a) against the feudal oppression or the monarchical regime, (b) against the British colonial rule, and (c) against the oppressive system of the Indian rulers. He played important role towards building a democratic Manipur. On the other hand, he took part in the struggle in the international movement to build a classless society.

Being a pioneer, Irabot have conveyed some messages to our people in the years to come. Those are: (1) As all human beings are being structured within a given political-economic condition; all positive and negative conditions in the society are the products of the political economy; (2) No individual can escape from the political economic structure. Therefore, the only means towards the growth of every individual is to improve the political economic conditions; (3) There is a small chunk of people, who is benefitted by keeping the condition of the society underdevelopment. They are the enemies of the society. Until and unless they are being identified, it is difficult to expose the enemies of the society. Until and unless they are being uprooted, the condition of the society cannot be improved; and (4) A peoples’ democratic movement is essential to develop the society. If armed revolution is essential in order to defend the democratic movement, there should be no frustration in doing that.

Our objectives of organising the Irabot Day Observation are primarily two; (1) To express our respect to the livelihood of Irabot and the roles that he had played, and (2) To have discussion on the messages that Irabot have conveyed to us. We are very serious about the second objective. Because, we are also keen towards making our society a peaceful, stable and fully developed society. In relation to this, there are many things that we would like to collectively discuss. Some of the discussions can be held on the following themes: (a) To which direction and on which path our political economy have been moving continuously since the times of Irabot? What are the forms of oppression and contradictions that have been created by this political economy? (c) Does our condition really calls for a new revolution? (d) What kind of revolution is being required? (d) Who will bring the revolution and how and to which direction?

We expect that all our friends will concentrate on the above issues and make our programme a grand success. May this programme become a step ahead and contribute to the making of a new Manipur.

Long live Hijam Irabot

Victory to people’s democratic revolution

Invitation
Condolence to late Ramkashing and Mayopam

MSAD is organizing a candle light condolence tomorrow (31st August 2014) in front of Delhi University Arts Faculty Gate at 5p.m., to condole the death of RamkashingVashi and R. Mayopam in police firing today, 30th August 2014, at Ukhrul. MSAD  extends invitation to everyone to kindly attend the programme.

Venue: Arts Faculty front Gate (Delhi University)

Date: 31st August 2014

Time: 5 pm

Press release on the condolence as follows:

Condolence to Ramkashing and Mayopam
Raise up for a peaceful world order against repressive regime

This day, 30th August 2014, will be another day to be remembered in red ink in the history of the politics of dissent and violent suppression. Ukhrul have lost two of its dearest soul and many have been injured while raising up for a human cause. In this regard, the Manipur Student’s Association Delhi raises the banner of justice and;

  1. Condole the killing of RamkashingVashi (s/o L. Christopher Vashi of Teinem Village, Ukhrul), and R. Mayopam (s/o L.R. Hangyui of Teinem Village, Ukhrul) in the course of police action to suppress the mass demonstration in Ukhrul today (30th August 2014) that was organized under the aegis of the United Naga Council. May their soul rest in peace and we express our heartfelt grievances to the loss with the family, relatives, friends and dear ones.
  2. Condemn the brutal repression that had to led to the casualty of AS. Pamshang of Ukhrul Town, Chanreiwon of Teinem Village, Khanreingam LK (S/o Yangmi LK of Leiting Village), L. Somiwon of Shirui, NingkhanLuikham (S/o David Luikham of Kongkan Village), RamchanngamHoram (S/o HelpsonHoram of Kharasom Village), ShangkahaoKeishing (S/o (L) Thomas Keishing of Thoyee Village), SK. Raingam of Kachai and many others.

Having observed the law and order situation in Ukhrul over the last few weeks, we have come up with the following observations, that;

  1. The scheduled mass protest was well planned and the administration was formally or informally aware of it. The mass demonstration was politically motivated and it was carried out in the context of the pent up resentment against the imposition of the Criminal Procedure Code Section 144 and the subsequent deployment of commandoes and IRBs, since 13th July 2014, which have been done as a response to the killing of Mr. NgalangzarMalue, an Autonomous District Council member of Ukhrul District by unidentified gunmen on 12 of July 2014.
  2. If the government have been committed to the peace and democracy of people; between 13th July and 30th August, there have been considerable time for it to come up with some practical political initiatives towards peaceful understanding with the people of Ukhrul. It seems to us that there have been lack of initiatives towards a workable peace process. Unfortunately, the government have followed its usual practice of militarization and repression of the voice of dissent.
  3. Therefore, what was happened today, was the repetition of ‘State Terrorism’ that have been systematically carried out without restraint for the last many years in the Imphal Valley and many other areas.
  4. This particular trend of governance is undemocratic and inhuman.

We, therefore;

  1. Strongly condemn the government for its failure to peacefully handle with the tense situation in Ukhrul.
  2. Express our suspicion about any hidden agenda of the Government to ignite social tension as a safety valve to divert away the attention of the people from certain genuine larger democratic issues that the government had failed to address to.
  3.  Appeal the progressive civil societies in Manipur and beyond to collectively fight against State terrorism in any form under any pretext.

Manipuri Students Association Delhi (MSAD) elects its new President, General Secretary and Executive Committee Members

Kuki student from NEFIS elected unopposed to the post of General Secretary of MSAD

Two students from the North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) who have been actively raising issues of North-East youth in Delhi, were elected unopposed to the post of President and General Secretary of Manipuri Students Association Delhi (MSAD) for the year 2013–2014. Chinglen Khumukcham and Thanglunmang Khongsai from NEFIS were elected as MSAD President and General Secretary, respectively.

The election of these two members into the Executive Committee of MSAD is an extremely positive development and is part of the larger process through which NEFIS has been encouraging Manipuri students to raise their issues in connection with the issues and problems faced by other north-east students. It is with this spirit of bringing different north-east communities together on a common set of concerns that NEFIS spearheaded the two-month long agitation against the imposition of a compulsory Hindi language course under Delhi University’s FYUP course. Arguing that such a language imposition was a discrimination against north-east students who have little or no school education in the Hindi language, NEFIS sparked off a militant struggle for withdrawal of the compulsory Hindi language course as it would play havoc with the academic performance of north-east students. By precipitating the struggle, both at the level of Delhi University and at level of the HRD Ministry (Government of India), NEFIS succeeded in getting the adamant University to accept the genuineness of the north-east students’ concerns and to withdraw the paper. Apart from the issue of the compulsory Hindi language paper, NEFIS has also helped mobilize north-east students across the board on glaring problems like police inaction on complaints by north-east youth, police atrocities and also on highly sensitive issues like sexual harassment of north-east women in Delhi.

The concerted efforts of Chinglen Khumukcham and Thanglunmang Khongsai as members of NEFIS have been helping to gradually spread larger sense of solidarity amongst students of different communities/nationalities of North-East . An indication of such solidarity and growing radicalization of youth politics is reflected in the simple fact that for the first time a Kuki student has been elected to the post of MSAD General Secretary. It is hoped that the emerging solidarity amongst different communities of the north-east will prove longstanding, and will be nurtured in letter and spirit by the newly elected Executive Committee of MSAD. The newly elected President and General Secretary hope that MSAD politics is not only radicalized further, but that students of Manipur in large numbers become more active in the progressive and democratic movement existing in Delhi.

NEFIS pledges to extend full support and to work with the newly elected Executive Committee of MSAD in order to usher in an egalitarian, democratic and progressive functioning of society.

Yours Sincerely

Ginminlun Haokip

Press Release

New Delhi

The Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD) had organised a demonstration and a candle light vigil on 29 April 2012 to condole the untimely lost of Richard Loitam and to protest his murder on 17th April by his hostel mates and the denial of justice. MSAD had held institutionalised racism by established institutions including the law enforcing agents as the gravest threat to the security of racial minorities and a big challenge to humanity and justice in India.

The demonstration at Jantar Mantar from 2.00 to 5.30 pm., that began with two minutes silent condolence was attended by above 300 persons including the representatives of Arunachal Students’ Union Delhi, BJP (Northeast Cell), Aavam (Delhi), Campaign for Peace & Democracy (Manipur), Delhi A’chik Youth Association (Meghalaya), Delhi Association for Manipuri Muslim Students, MSAD, Manipur Women Gun Survivor Network, Naga Students’ Union Delhi, Northeast Helpline Centre, Zakir Hussain College Students’ Union, Zillai (Mizo), and others. The candle light vigil at India Gate, 6 to 8 pm was attended by more than 700 persons.

All those who had attended the programmes had condemned the crime and expressed their concern for the aggrieved family of Richard. A memorandum endorsed by all and addressed to the Prime Minister of India (copied to Union Home Minister, Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Manipur) had raised the following demands:

  • To set up a special investigation team to transparently investigate into the case and those held guilty be booked immediately.
  • The Acharya NAV School of Architecture and the officials be booked and punished according to the law for the negligence towards Richard, tampering of evidences, hindering and for impending the case.
  • To take up immediate and adequate initiatives to ensure security of the emigrant workers (employees), job seekers and students from the Northeast who are vulnerable and exposed to all forms of racial discrimination and attack in the mainland metropolitan cities and institutional establishments.
  • The case should be converted to a homicidal case as the preliminary post mortem report shows proofs of severe physical assault and internal injury which is the cause of death.
  • Investigations should be swift and thorough.

MSAD had called upon the people cutting across community, territorial, and political boundaries to collectively fight for justice and against institutionalised racism in India.

The demonstration that was conducted by Malem Ningthouja began with assemblage and welcomeS address by the General Secretary of MSAD RK Sanayaima. She asserted MSAD’s commitment to fight for justice, peace and development in Manipur. MSAD’s former president Rojesh Seram traced the genesis of terrorism in the colonial intension of the Indian State that used militant means to suppress people’s democratic voice and emphasised that terrorism within an administrative entity was dominantly nurtured and perpetuated by the governing State. Associate professor Akoijam Bimol endorsed the demands mentioned in the memorandum and suggested that apart from public protests there was urgent need for pressing upon the concerned authority to register police case vis-a-vis the Sangakpham Bazaar bomb blast of 1st August 2011 and to take up due legal or official process to investigate into the matter. President of IMMA Ms Khuman Leima called upon the people to unite and fight against suppressive and terrorist activities particularly perpetrated by the government. She demanded immediate repeal of the controversial AFSPA. Other representatives expressed solidarity to the Manipur people’s struggle for justice and peace.
