(contd from previous issue)
A closer look at the population growth rate during the decade (2001-2011) suggests that there is abnormally high population growth in the hill districts vis-a-vis the valley districts of Manipur. Ukhrul shows a decadal growth rate of 30.07, followed by Tamenglong (25.69), Senapati (25.16), Chandel (21.72) and Churachandpur (19.03). On the other hand, the decadal growth rate in all the 4 valley districts of Manipur is around 15 only. The abnormally high decadal growth rate in the hill districts may be, most probably, due to high influx of tribals from neighbouring states and Myanmar engineered by vested interests for their political ends. The pathetic scenario of the indigenous Manipuri people are now becoming a minority in Jiribam, should not be lost sight of. It is an outcome of short sighted game plan of the politicians of the region to capture power by importing migrants for their vote bank regardless of the fate of their children in future. The brethren of the hill areas of Manipur must think of the future which is threatened by the inflow of migrants from other states or countries.

Traffic Circus : Manipur Style

Of late, much has been talked about and many (in fact all of us on the Imphal road) have been complaining on the TRAFFIC CONGESTION in and around Imphal.
When asked, in simple terms one would say, ‘Traffic Congestion’ is an excess of vehicles on road demanding for more space than the available road capacity resulting in slower speeds, sometimes much slower than normal speeds, and increased in queuing of vehicles. However, take a closer look and it will not be an exaggeration to say that, “it’s more of ‘traffic confusions’ than traffic congestions on Imphal roads.”

Police and security forces are the most ubiquitous and visible agents of the State in our country. The same is true of Manipur where we see greenery (SFs) and khaki (Police) everywhere. At the same time, the role and responsibilities of the security forces are quite challenging in this multi-ethnic, conflict-ridden and limited resource state. Despite the 24 x 7 service rendered by the security forces,

Attacking Rajiv Gandhi’s ideas is a sign of a worried Modi regime

In the end of August of this year, 2016, Modi government, in New Delhi, put a ban on the organization – IRF (Islamic Research Foundation) – of Zakir Naik. Before this year’s August, Zakir Naik’s IRF was not banned by Modi government which came to power since May mid, 2014. Much before 2014, in the year of 2011 RGCT (Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust) received an amount of 50 (fifty) lakhs rupees from IRF. In the year 2011, IRF was not a banned NGO. So, Modi government did not stop IRF from propagating its ideas, as the government did not put a ban, then, for 2 years, which were from the mid 2014 to August of 2016. Modi woke up in the end of this August 2016 after Bangladesh demanded to know more about the details of Zakir Naik’s operations from India in the mid of August.

After completion of the exile period, his off springs are allowed to return to the village. Among the Kharam, if a man kills another man by mistake or otherwise, the custom allows revenge by the relatives of the deceased by killing him. Kidney and gallstones represent a widely prevalent and costly health issue. The chemical composition of gallstones or kidney stones is essential to study the aetiopathogenesis of gallstone disease and to help identify the cause of the kidney stone and, where possible, to prevent the recurrence of more stones. Both health conditions are very common in this part of the country.

Customary law on murder cases of the Zeliangrongs

For murder within the village, the offender could be executed, but in all the Naga groups there was a strong revulsion against injuring physically a fellow-villager and expulsion was more likely.” The Pei has the power to declare social boycott to any of the families who defies the orders or decisions of village court or who in the opinion of the village court are trouble for the village. It is a terrible thing for the families who are boycotted by the village. When a member of an excommunicated family dies, the villagers will not attend the funeral service. So, one and all try to obey the orders of the village court. Among the Meiteis, in many cases, banishment to a Loi village was a common form of punishment in the past. Imprisonment is not a part of the tribal system.

India’s poor show at Olympics – China has the answer

While the Indian media is beating behind the bush or deliberately remaining numb, the Chinese state media had already listed out the reasons it believes are behind the poor show of India in every Olympics and most particularly the recently concluded one at Rio. These are: lack of infrastructure, poor health, poverty, girls not being allowed to participate in sports, boys being coaxed into becoming doctors and engineers, the popularity of cricket over other sports, India’s fading hockey glory and lack of information about the Olympics in rural areas.

Being human towards animals

Mahatma Gandhi famously said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Looking at the defunct laws against animal cruelty in the country, it seems like we have failed him, and the nation, miserably.

Customary law on murder cases of the Zeliangrongs

Ancient people believed that their laws came from the gods; the Cretans, the Lacedaemonians, the Romans and the Etruscans had attributed their laws to Jupiter, Apollo, the goddess Egeria and the god Tages respectively. The laws long did remain holy and even at the time when the vote of a people might make a law, it was still required that at least the consent of religion should be obtained. Plato said “To obey the laws is to obey the gods.”

Reflections on the contingencies of anti-AFSPA movement

Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 was almost unheard of to the masses until Ms. Irom Chanu Sharmila launched her ‘fast unto death’ protest in November 2000 demanding revocation of this ‘draconian’ law. Crimes against the local populace committed by the ‘Armed Forces’ misusing the legal immunity presented by AFSPA, 1958 would have largely remained the gallantry award winning actions of counter-insurgency operations if Ms. Sharmila had not given teeth to the Anti-AFSPA movement.
