Flashback: The roots of the Hollywood Studio System

Before Hollywood had come an abject failure – that of the Motion Pictures Patent Company (MPPC) to monopolise the film business. This was a cartel of 11 leading American and European producers of films and manufacturers of cameras and projectors.

In December 1908, a “trust” was formed by major American film companies (Edison, Biograph, Vitagraph, Essanay, Selig, Lubin, Kalem, American Star, American Pathé), the leading film distributor (George Kleine) and the biggest supplier of raw film stock, Eastman Kodak, to inflate the prices of equipment they alone could manufacture. The companies pooled patents and made thousands of short films. Only cooperating companies, licensed by the MPPC could manufactur “legal” films and film equiment. It was a big bully.

The MPPC ended the domination of foreign films on American screens, standardised the manner in which films were distributed and exhibited in the US, and improved the quality of American motion pictures by internal competition. The MPPC was modelled on the Edison licensing system, which had existed ephemerally in 1907–1908. It was a desire of one man – inventor Thomas Alva Edison, who owned most of the major American patents relating to motion picture cameras – to control the industry with allies.

The Edison Manufacturing Company’s would routinely file patent lawsuits against its competitors. The American film industry was crippled. Biograph was the only Edison rival to survive since it used a different camera design. The sesser mortals had no hoice but import foreign-made films, mostly French and British. Not content, Edison also harassed distributors and exhibitors on the ground that if they did not use his machines and films exclusively, they would be subject to litigation for supporting filmmaking that infringed Edison’s patents.

Rivals Essanay, Kalem, Pathé Frères, Selig, and Vitagraph approached the Edison Manufacturing Company in 1907 to broker a licensing agreement. Lubin too was invited, but Biograph kept out. The motto of this agreement was clear: to “preserve the business of present manufacturers and not to throw the field open to all competitors.”

And when the MPPC was formed, it sought to eliminate the outright sale of films to distributors and exhibitors, replacing it with rentals, which allowed quality control over prints that had formerly been exhibited long past their prime. Then came a uniform rental rate for all licensed films. Price as a factor for the exhibitor in film selection was thus removed.

The cartel monopoly slowly increased. Eastman Kodak, which owned the patent on raw film stock, sold stock only to other members. Since MPPC had control of patents on motion picture cameras, only its own studios were able to film. Similarly, the MPPC with its deals with distributors and theatres, decided who screened their films and where.

Independent filmmakers responded by moving their operations to the small suburb of Hollywood to the west of Los Angeles. This was not done without a reason – it was on the other coast, far away from Edison’s home town of New Jersey. The Hollywood area came under the purview of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco. It was averse to enforcing patent claims. There were other reasons for selecting this location. Southern California had a beautiful year-round weather and varied countryside; its topography, semi-arid climate and widespread irrigation gave its landscapes the ability to offer motion picture shooting scenes set in deserts, jungles and great mountains.

The beginning of the decline of the MPPC coincided with the growth of Hollywood. In fact, it started soon after the cartel was formed. In 1911, Eastman Kodak modified its exclusive contract with the MPPC, and allowed Kodak to sell its raw film stock. The immediate fallout was the the number of theaters exhibiting independent films grew by 33 per cent within twelve months.

The MPPC also overestimated its power of influence. Its practice of using detectives to investigate patent infringements, and of obtaining injunctions against the infringers, was outpaced by the dynamic rise of new companies in diverse locations. The MPPC was hamstrung with Edison’s aversion for longer films. It took the MPPC players four years to come up with their feature films. By this time, independent filmmakers had released hundreds.

With the outbreak of World War I, Europe was cut off from the MPPC. The war hit it more than the independents who mostly made Westerns for an American audience. As revenues dipped, the final nail in the MPPC’s coffin was struck by a federal court which ruled that the organisation had gone “far beyond what was necessary to protect the use of patents or the monopoly which went with them.” The big bully was finally cut down to size.

The independents, meanwhile, were on a roll. Their feature films generated more interest among filmgoers than the two-reel, fifteen minute narratives of the MPPC did. They were all over the magazines, and each film was a unique product that was heavily advertised. Gradually, the independents no longer remained independents – they became a system. This system did precisely what the MPPC had failed to do – have total control over the industry to produce, distribute and exhibit films. We will be calling it the Hollywood Studio System.

Invitation to join a one day solidarity fast on 10th December in support of Irom Sharmila

INVITATION
TO JOIN ONE DAY SOLIDARITY FAST ON 10TH DECEMBER
IN SUPPORT OF IROM SHARMILA
RAJGHAT, 10 DECEMBER, 09 AM TO 05 PM

Dear Friends,

As you are aware that NAPM and many other civil society organisations have Initiated a campaign ” SAVE SHARMILA SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN” to put forward the cause of Irom Sharmila at the centre stage of politics.

Irom Sharmila has been fasting for 11 years in Manipur against AFSPA ( Armed forces special powers act).

The AFSPA calls for an autocratic and unchecked rule by the army. In the name of ‘protecting the law and order’, anyone can be arrested or shot. It has led to extra-judicial killings, illegal detentions, fake encounters, rapes and torture of the civilian population.

The campaign has already organized various activities in various cities of India such as candle light vigils, public meetings, documentary screening and recently the Srinagar-Imphal Save Sharmila Jan Karwan which has created a big buzz in the eyes of the public.
(Jan Karawan news link: http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/other-states/article2573676.ece)

The campaign has also launched a Nationwide Signature Drive in many states on 2nd October 2011.(Signature campaign news link: http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-09-04/guwahati/30112277_1_signature-campaign-konpal-kongkham-leikai-irom-sharmila; http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article2506988.ece?css=print)

The signature campaign is going to culminate at Rajghat on 10th December 2011 with a one day solidarity fast (on 10th December) by women activists (alongwith students and other activists) in support and solidarity of Irom Sharmila and such other struggles in this country. 10th December being International human rights day, we have chosen this day to organise this event.

On behalf of ” Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign” we invite you to join the fast at RAJGHAT, New Delhi on the 10th of December 2011. Please do join the fast . Your presence will give boost to the cause of Irom sharmila . Since, we have no political support nor is it any specific NGO sponsored campaign, we require help in terms of resources and funds also to organise such a major event. Do let us know, if there is any way you can help us out.

We request you to send your confirmation to join this one day fast or just make your support and presence felt by coming and be a part of this movement.

Kuki Worship Service London – 4th Anniversary Celebration at Bournemouth Beach

After much deliberation and earnest prayer, on Saturday 9th July 2011 KWS London went for an outing to Bournemouth, marking its 4th Anniversary of the fellowship (2007-2011) in an awesome outdoor family-friendly model.

The weather was excellent, and it was a great day to get to know others, have fund, food and fellowship. As highlighted beforehand, a Coach was hired for transportation. Altogether over 25+ people were on board, joining the day out. The team set off from London around 9.30 am and reached Bournemouth (the final destination) at 11.30 am.

The KWS committee-having truly felt the essential aspect of development in the areas of physical and social for spiritual growth and wellbeing, this trip was especially designed for an out-door. In fact, needless to mention though, in a Mega-City like London everybody seems to be leading a hectic lives handing various commitments relating to work, school, and family. All these seem to occupy and engaged people’s entire day with no time for “get-together to socialize”. This outing offered a brilliant opportunity to socialize, vent out some stress, also provided a sense of peace and recreation for all.

On reaching the amazing targeted spot, everyone had an incredible moment! The place was a lovely sandy beach with stunning views of the Isle of Wight. Some played sand football, some strolling along seaside enjoying the miles of breath-taking coast line, whilst others were seating cool on a deckchair seeping wonderful drink and chatting to people around.
Before lunch period foods & drinks bought together were kept on a portable table with an appropriate cover to protect from unnecessary contamination.

A buffet lunch was served at 1.30 pm. The recipe includes Kebab, traditional Mepoh, Ngari-Singju and many more, which everyone enjoyed! This was followed by a brief photograph session. Later in the afternoon, unable to resist the temptation of the amazing sea, some KWS folks grabbed the opportunity to swim in the sea, also played on the sandy beach creating a crazy art on the sand, adding spice to the event.

At the fake end of all the activities Canon Dr David Haokip led a brief reflection session, which was concluded in prayer by Revd. Zamhao Haokip. This was followed by much awaited “Lengkhom” inside the Coach led by Mr. Daniel Haokip, Johnny Haolai, Robert Vaiphei and Nengpi Haokip keeping the trip very lively all the way until we reached back home. One of our colleagues Mr. Rickky Vaiphei said “Today is one of my happiest days ever!” Indeed, without a shadow of a doubt it was truly an enriching experience. Everyone had a blessed time, fun and fellowship, forging new relationships with the newcomers!

KWS London committee would like say a big “Thank You” to everyone for coming along to the outing and making it such a marvelous day out. Also, we extend our sincere thanks to all who constantly supports our effort through prayer.

KWS fellowship: There will be no fellowship for the month of August, however-hope to see you all in the up-coming KUT festival.

The next KWS fellowship is expected to be held on the second Sunday of September. Further details will be sent out nearer to the date.

Dear Fellow Indians,

We are sportspersons who love to play our sport and bring smiles to our people. We play as ‘India’ and we play for the pride of our countrymen. There can be nothing bigger an award for us than people cheering at our every move and pray for a win every time we play.

We believe that the sportspersons and common people ooze the tears of happiness and sorrow together. We are from this beautiful part of India, popularly known as North East. We are simple people smiling our way to achieve our simple dreams. We love to play and win. We love to smile and show to the world how wonderful this corner of the earth is. But, alas, it is not the case always!

As much as we have enjoyed the privilege of representing you in various international platforms, today we are very saddened at what is repeatedly going on in our beloved and beautiful state of Manipur. The common people have been struggling everyday for basic amenities of life. The four month long economic blockade and resultant deadlock have affected the normal life of every common man of this part of the country.

It’s sad to see this great nation giving a deaf ear while lakhs of its citizens in one of the most vibrant states – Manipur have been suffering under the dark shadow of the economic blockade for more than 120 days. It’s painful to see no conclusive action from any of the responsible quarters for over 4 months when the people of Manipur were made to struggle for basic essential items, life saving drugs and many more.

It’s same state which has produced some of the best sportspersons for this country who have brought laurels to the nation at international platforms; it’s the same state which has given some of the best performing art forms and artistes to the nation.

Today, they need your support. They need support from everyone to put an end to the sufferings and help them live a normal life.

We appeal to everyone to restrain from using economic blockade or other such extreme modes of protest on humanitarian grounds and find a solution through democratic way. At the same time, we appeal to our fellow countrymen and the people’s representatives to join hands and help bring back Manipur on the growth path and make it an integral part of the development of our nation.

Let us, the people of this country, work towards rebuilding the jewel of India.

We hope that our honourable prime minister will sow the seeds of peace and lay the foundation of a prosperous Manipur when he visits the state on 3rd December, 2011.

Hopefully,

Despicable Act

The bomb attack at the venue of the Sangai Tourism Festival was to say the… more »

The bomb attack at the venue of the Sangai Tourism Festival was to say the least despicable. Nobody will argue that everything about the attack spelled lowly terrorism. It was not even a directly carried out attack and a proxy had to be used to courier the explosives close to the festival site. Most tragically, the courier, a rickshaw driver who apparently was given a tip for transporting the packet that contained the bomb was killed probably because the bomb exploded prematurely. Two other people nearby also received minor injuries but they have since been declared out of danger. Though the casualty figure was low, the intent was clear – it was meant to terrorise. To give the devil his due however, it would only be fair to say the bomb was meant only as a message of intent and not to cause any extensive damage, for the attack happened in the morning, when the fair was in process of preparation to open. Had attack happened in the evening hours, when crowds thronged the venue, the disaster would possibly have been unimaginable.

Though nobody has claimed responsibility, the dying man pointed his finger at some men who claimed they were from the KCP. But whoever was responsible, even if they did not mean to cause extensive mayhem, definitely have managed to damage the reputation of Manipur extensively. The tourism fair, it may be recalled had several foreign participants, and the stories they would be telling when they go back to their countries is hardly likely to promote a friendly picture of the state, one that would draw more participants from other countries in the coming years. It would also have turned back the clock of tourism prospects of the state by several years. Some of the foreign participants did make this point clear and were visibly upset with the security arrangement made for them that could be so easily breached.

The saving grace, as we see it was the manner the common people disregarded the message the attack was meant to convey. On the same evening of the attack, huge crowds turned out in perhaps the largest number in all the days of the fair and participated with no hint of fear, almost as if they were standing up together and in unison declaring they would refused to be terrorised anymore. The response would have been frustrating for those who intended to intimidate them. But beyond this sense of personal rebuff, we hope they too received the message the public was conveying to them – that they would stand by and cooperate with only those with whom they share a cause. The implications of this message should reach out much further to all organisations claiming to be fighting on behalf of the people. It should have made it clear to them that they have to constantly make the effort to sync with the aspirations and desires of the people. Otherwise, their ideologies and acts would sooner than later become reactionary in nature. This seems to be happening already to a great extent. Even for the remaining “responsible organisations”, there has come about a huge disconnect between their and the people’s outlook.

There was another positive message coming out of the sorry episode. In the defiance of the people to terror was clearly visible Manipur’s hope. It demonstrated the accusation that the people of the state have been subdued and intimidated into total submission to the will of the numerous subversive elements operating in the state, is not true to all extents. Perhaps a threshold has been reached and the people are beginning to assert their independence from fear once again. If this is so, no thought of the state at this moment can be more encouraging. As the condemnation messages from the Governor and Chief Minister also underscored, the will and determination loudly visible in the people’s defiance, is the new spark that can reignite the creative and constructive spirit the place so desperately need today. This flicker of positive light we hope would spell the beginning of a turnaround for the entire state to once again place it on the track of progress and prosperity – the promised land of “chak hongba, nga hongba” (land of plenty) of the place’s folklores.

HIV positive children are devoid of assistances, CRY calls for support

IMPHAL, Nov 30: 13-year old Devender Singh lives with his 60-year-old grandmother, Mahima Devi, in… more »

IMPHAL, Nov 30: 13-year old Devender Singh lives with his 60-year-old grandmother, Mahima Devi, in Imphal West. Devender lost his parents to AIDS many years ago, and has been cared for by his grandmother ever since. Mahima has managed to eke out a living for them by selling vegetables in the market, but the recent economic blockade in the State has made survival almost impossible. As prices of petrol skyrocketed and mobility was restricted, Mahima had no customers to buy her wares. The soaring prices of food meant that she could not afford to buy nutritious food like bananas and eggs which are so crucial for Devender, who is frequently ill and currently on Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART).

Growing up in a conflict zone, children in the north-eastern state of Manipur are often deprived of their childhood; yet it is the children living with HIV who face the toughest struggles. In addition to coping with a life-threatening disease and the social stigmas attached to it, many children are deprived of the life-saving Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) due to curfews imposed, and the sporadic supply of medication to the hospitals and healthcare centres during conflicts.

Atindranath Das, Regional Director, CRY says, “The situation of children living with HIV is particularly disconcerting, since they are infected, and affected by circumstances and actions beyond their own doing. They are, in every sense, innocent victims of the epidemic.”

The absence of a social security system from both, the community and the state force many children living in families affected by HIV/AIDS to be caregiver and engage in economic activity to run the household. Janardhan studies in the 7th standard and lives with his mother Ritika, who is HIV positive and currently on ART.  A single mother, Ritika is often ill and weak, unable to carry out farming chores on a small piece of land which is the only source of income for the family.  As a result, Janardhan frequently misses school to help out his mother by working on the farm and doing the household chores.

The National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) in its Strategy and Implementation Plan 2006 states that the present responses on care given to children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS provide mere short-term benefits and do not cater to their best interests in terms of their right to health, protection, education and nutrition.

In order to effectively address the needs of children, both, infected and affected by HIV, CRY recommends three basic actions:

(i) Since ART is proven to suppress the HIV virus and stop the progression of the HIV disease, the government should make ART freely available and accessible, specially in paediatric doses, preferably at the community level through functioning Primary Healthcare Centres.

(ii Create and enable special corridors for supply of life-saving drugs including ART so that frequent blockades do not take a toll on children living with HIV.

(iii) To combat and end the life-threatening degree of stigmatization of HIV affected children, widespread community awareness programmes are needed, as well as peer-to-peer education, support groups and facilitated workshops.

(iv) CRY calls for the National bodies such as the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the respective Ministries to step in, to resolve the situation while keeping children’s needs at the top.

The government should push for a permanent end to armed conflict that is one of the significant reasons behind poor access to healthcare. The extra judicial powers vested with the army needs to be thoroughly re-examined to ensure that children do not suffer from violence and trauma.

“Any HIV-specific programme must acknowledge and work with the extreme stressors that are a daily reality for children infected and affected with HIV/AIDS,” says Atindranath Das. “State authorities must invest in public facilities, infrastructure and rights-related services such as primary healthcare, provision of Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) for children and schooling. This approach needs to be prioritised above all other approaches to problem-solving in Manipur,” he adds.
